Observing, recording and reflecting on the play of

often involved working with young children in a play
therapy context on a long-term basis.
Pastoral counseling with adolescents and adults aged
between 16 and 40 years old, using the Narrative
approach. I have also been involved with the John
Wesley Community Centre (JWCC) which is in
Daveyton, Johannesburg. I assisted in training
members of the community in lay pastoral counseling
using the Narrative model.

Mighty Wings Life
Centre
2010-2012 Research psychologist
intern, 12-step group
facilitator & support group
facilitator
Mighty Wings Life Centre (MWLC) is a NPO which
offers affordable community-based, family focused
recovery from drug addiction. The organisation has
expanded to offer services to about 100 recovering
addicts and their families in Benoni, Randburg and
Pretoria.
The first role that I took on at MWLC was that of a 12-
step programme small-group facilitator. The 12-step
programme aims to help recovering addicts and their
families to work through their hurts, hang-ups, and
habits.
As a support group facilitator, my primary role was to
ensure that my group members were following the
recovery principles of their recovery plans. Together
with the members of my group, we worked through
the difficulties that they faced within the different
areas of their lives.
I completed nine months of my research internship at
MWLC. As an intern in research psychology, I
developed a new intake assessment for the
organization, captured and analysed data. I also co-
facilitated a DBT group and developed an anger
management programme.

Research intern
(Placement)
As a requirement of the MARC programme, I
completed a placement at HERI, where I was
involved in a team that conducted educational/
institutional research into 1st
year students’ reasons
for discontinuing or changing their studies in 2010.
Together with my colleague, we conducted 245
telephonic interviews. We were responsible for
developing a codebook which allowed us to transform
the qualitative data from the interviews into
quantitative data.
After compiling our findings in a comprehensive
report, we were fortunate enough to develop a new
research proposal for HERI.
LoveLife August-

2011
Research intern
(Placement)
The main project that I was involved in at Lovelife
was Lovelife’s baseline study for the VW/Lovelife Y-
Centre in Kwanobuhle (Eastern Cape). I spent two
weeks in Uitenhage, Kwanobuhle, Kwalanga, and
Rosedale during which time I conducted 8 focus
groups and community mapping exercises.
Another project that I completed at Lovelife was an in-
house article which focused on the implications of
using Conditional Cash Transfers as a means of
reducing HIV prevalence.
The Ububele
Educational and
2014 Intern in Counselling
Psychology
The Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust is
a Non-Profit Organisation based in Kew,
3. Psychotherapy
Trust
Johannesburg, which focuses on improving the
emotional development and wellbeing of children
under the age of seven, their parents and other
caregivers. My role as an intern in counselling
psychology focused primarily on offering
psychotherapy to children and adults as well as
conducting assessments for educational purposes.
Whilst at the organisation, I completed a number of
courses that were largely underpinned by
psychodynamic theory:
An introduction to Parent-Infant Psychotherapy: I
completed this eight week training course that
focuses on training mental health professionals to
work with mothers, father and their infants. Parent-
Infant Psychotherapy is a new field, which focuses on
the relationship between caregiver(s) and infant. The
course includes learning to observe caregiver-infant
interactions and also explores the earliest precursors
of disordered attachment. After completing this
course, I worked for a couple of hours each week at
the Alexandra Clinic, between April and November,
as a baby mat practitioner. This role involved
assisting mothers with a broad range of presenting
problems, which included attachment difficulties,
concerns about infants reaching developmental
milestones, HIV, difficulties with feeding and maternal
depression.
Working with groups: Based on the concepts of group
analytic psychotherapy, this largely experiential
course focused on developing an understanding of
the complexity and dynamics involved in working with
groups. Combining experiential learning and theory, I
developed a greater understanding of the dynamics
involved in a group by being part of smaller and
larger groups. While I had previous experience in
working with groups, this course helped me to
develop greater insight in to the unconscious
processes that are evoked within a group context.
Persona Doll Training: This unique and innovative
training aimed to develop children’s emotional
literacy; that is, their ability to identify and express a
broad range of emotions. Creating a persona for the
doll allows children to talk about similar life
experiences that they may have had. The projective
nature of the test also allows children to talk about
emotions and experiences which may be more
difficult to discuss with an adult.

Self-description: I am a highly-motivated, dedicated, thoughtful, respectful, calm, curious, empathic, and friendly
person. I am also a fast-learner and highly adaptable. I find it easy to get along with others and to work in a team.
Interests: I have thoroughly enjoyed the work that I have been involved in over the past five years. I enjoy working in a
community-setting and being able to provide an accessible service to the members of the communities that I have
worked in. In terms of where I see myself in five years’ time, I would like to be working within a community-setting
providing affordable counseling, training lay counselors, and developing community-based interventions. Outside of my
work and studies, I enjoy being outdoors and spending time with my family.
