RADIO WAVES!!

       By Tom Stacey p11245512
W H AT A R E R A D I O WAV E S T O M ?

Well Random question generator, I’ll tell you!

- Radio waves are an invisible Electromagnetic radiation.
- They are part of the electromagnetic spectrum (along with gamma rays, xrays,
    etc)
- It is has one of the widest ranges in the electromagnetic spectrum.
- The term “Radio” is a term describing all forms of electromagnetic radiation
with a wavelength longer than a millimetre and a frequency above 300 GHz.
- Radio waves with a wavelength of less than roughly 10 meters are absorbed by
    the atmosphere.

 Here on the right hand side is
a diagram showing where radio
fits into the Electromagnetic
Spectrum. As you can see its in
the left hand section of invisible
light and for this reason we
cannot see them passing through
the air.

                    WAV E S ? ?

 Radio is the most obvious of these but other than that there are plenty of other
ways that we use radio waves.
 Wireless networks
 Television signals
 Mobile phones
 Radars
 Microwaves
 Sate light communication
RADIO

 The ‘Radio’ has two main types…
- AM – (Amplitude modulated) In its simplest terms an AM receiver detects amplitude changes in the radio waves
at a particular frequency. It then amplifies changes in the signal voltage to work a loudspeaker or earphones.

- FM – (Frequency modulated) is the opposite of AM sending information over a carrier wave whilst varying its
frequency.

 It works by an antenna sending out radio waves to a radio.
The radio then converts the signals into sound which plays out
of speakers.
MICROWAVES

 Microwaves are an everyday appliance for humans.

 They use radio waves to cook items of food.

 The microwaves are also on the electromagnetic Spectrum and
they come next to Radio waves still within the invisible light.
WI-FI

Wi-Fi works similarly to radio. It works as a two ways radio
communication. The wireless router receives radio signals and
decodes those radio signals into information. It then sends the
information to the internet using an Ethernet cable.

This gives the user the option of connecting to the internet without
having to connect manually with an Ethernet cable to their laptop or
desktop computer.
A CONCLUSION OF SORTS

 Radio waves are an important part of todays world, whether its
listening to your favourite radio station or satelights in space receiving
signals allowing a global technological community to exist.
 Without them we would also face many safety issues that other
modern technology has created, for example modern weaponry.
 From simply communicating on the telephone to using a microwave,
people rely on radio waves and I truly believe that human beings wouldn’t
cope without them.
