1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
There will not be any cost for making my book, as college provides everything I need.
Available resources:
The resources available to me are things such a MAC to complete my work on; software is also available to
me such as Photoshop. I also have paper and pens available to me so I will be able to do some illustration.

2. Quantity:
As the book is commonly known and there is not that big of a change to the storyline so the story will likely be
popular, the book can be mass-produced. The books will be sold in popular bookshops and online so that it
can reach a wider range of people. As the book is likely to be popular there will be 100,000 copies produced.
Audience and Target Market:
The target market for my children’s book is girls aged between 6-7. The story is aimed at females because the
story is a fairy-tale which is more likely to appeal to girls rather than boys. I picked the age of 6-7 because the
child is at an age where they will be able to read, so the book doesn’t have to be very basic the graphics can
be more detailed and the language used can vary more.
Quality Factors:
A factor that influences the quality of my work is how I manage my time, this also links to the planning done,
as if the planning is done thoroughly it means that the work is easier to do as I have a clear plan of the tasks I
need to complete. Another influence is if I know how to use the software I am planning to use, I have a clear
understanding on how to use Photoshop. I must back up my work in multiple places, as memory sticks are
unreliable and may get misplaced or can become unresponsive.
Codes of Practice:
The codes of practice are a guide made by the publishers association, about how a publisher should interact
with the author. Some rules are, that there must be a set deadline for the author to get the book sent to the
publisher for, and if the author does not get the book in on time the publisher can refuse to publish or take a
compensation. Another rule is that the book must not contain any copyright or defamation or illegal content.
Also the quality of the work must be the same as when the publisher took on the story, for instance if the
tester page was really good but the quality of the final book isn’t on par with it, the publisher can refuse to
publish the book.

3. Regulation:
The obscene publications act of 1959 makes sure if the book were to have themes or images of ‘obscene’
acts or words the book it would be labelled for a certain target audience. They test for if the language or
images used might corrupt the intended audience. Since my book is aimed towards young children the book
must not contain anything of an ‘obscene’ nature that is likely to corrupt children.
Copyright:
Despite the fact my book is based on the pre-existing story of The princess and the pea there are no copyright
restrictions, this is because the book was written such a long time ago. To avoid copyright restrictions I need
to make sure to not use any fonts that are copyrighted, I also need to make sure that I don’t use any pre-
existing characters as this may cause me some legal problems.
Ethical Issues:
To make sure that my book doesn’t have any ethical issues I need to make sure the book doesn’t contain any
indecency or obscene images or language that is unsuitable for the intended audience. I also need to make
sure that I have cultural sensitivity within my book, for instance I wont use offensive characters of any races or
religions. Another thing I must make sure of is that my story has a goods moral that teach the children to do
something good.

4. Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

5. Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1:
I will start to illustrate the characters. I will draw the princess for page 3, to help me get ideas on how to
draw her I look at images of foxes.
I draw the princess for page 6, 8, 9 and 10, also looking at images of foxes online to help me draw
them.
Once I’ve finished the drawing, I will scan the pages the drawing is on in.
When the scans have come through, I will begin to rotoscope around the princess. I will start with the
princess for page number 3 and go through the rest of the drawings the same way.
Session 2:
Now, I will begin to draw the prince, starting with page 7. I will use photos of foxes to help inspire how he
should look.

6. Next, I will draw the prince for page 8, 9 and 10, using the same method of looking at images for
inspiration.
Once I have completed all the prince character drawings, I will scan the pages in on the scanner.
After, I will start to rotoscope the drawings, beginning with page 7 and doing the same for 8, 9 and 10.
Session 3:
I will draw the Queen, starting on 7, again using images of real foxes to help me draw the characters
After that I will draw the Queen for page 9, using the same method as before.
I will scan in the drawings, once I have finished.
Once the scans come through, I will begin to rotoscope starting with page 7 then doing page 8.
Session 4:
Now, I will begin to create the backgrounds, I will start with page 1. I have to make a map for page 1, I
will do this by getting an image of a map of Europe off of Google, then I will use the lasso tool to go
around the edge of the shape.

7. Once I have finished going around the shape, I will create a copy via layer. I will colour the shape brown
to make it look old.
After I have done that I will add crosses to signify where the prince went, adding lines to show where he
would have walked.
I will add the rotoscope of the prince that I made.
Session 5:
Now, I will begin to create the second page. I start to make the window and door using shapes.
Once I have finished page 2, I will start on page 3. I will begin by creating the floor, I do this by making a
rectangle then duplicating it and changed the colour, I then place them alternating between the two
coloured rectangles. This creates a wooden floor effect.
I then used the same shape from page 2 as the door shape. I then added the rotoscope of the princess.
Session 6:
I start to create page 4, I begin by creating the bedframe using shapes, after this I add the first mattress
so I have prospective on how I’m going to have the bed looking.
After that I will begin to add in the slats of the bed, once I have finished that I will make a bone. I will do
this by getting an image of a bone off of Google and rotoscoping it. Once I have done that I will finish the
mattresses and add the text.

8. Session 7:
I will now create page 5, I will start by finding an image of a crown. Once I’ve done that I will rotoscope it
to create the outline of the crown. Once I do finish that I will create diamonds out of shapes and use
these to make the crown look more realistic. I will then add the text.
After that I will create page 6, I will use the same bedframe from page 4, but put more mattresses on
and remove the slats and bone. I will then add the rotoscope of the princess and crown I used off of the
princess. Next I will add the text.
Session 8:
Now I will create page 7, I will do this by making the table and chairs using shapes. I will then add the
rotoscopes of the Queen and prince.
After that I will create page 8, I will do this by using an image of a wood panel, I will then add a filter
onto that image. Then I will add the rotoscope and the text.
Session 9:
I will create page 9, I will do this by creating the cloud with shapes. I then add the rotoscopes and text.
After that I will create page 10, I will begin by creating the wedding arch, I will do this by creating the
base shape using shapes, then I will rotoscoping images of flowers, then adding them onto the shape.
After I will add the rotoscopes of the characters and the texts.
Session 10:

9. I will make sure that all my work is complete and that it is ready to be handed in.

10. Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you are very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
To make sure that using the computer doesn’t cause me
any damage to my health. For instance eye strain, or
muscle pains.
Some ways I can prevent this from happening are to be
on the computer for 1-hour blocks. I also will go by the
‘Display Screen Equipment Regulation’. The set up and
chairs are also moveable, which means I can change
them to my desire.
Damage to electrical items, from liquid. Make sure the drink is in a sealed container so that if it is
knocked over the drink won’t spill.

11. Tripping hazards, such as bags or chairs.
Make sure that all bags are put out of the way and chairs
are no sticking out.
Power cables.
Make sure to not touch the metal parts of power cables
and be careful around them.
