What is a Monitoring Gap?
A monitoring gap is a known (or unknown) area in your monitoring
infrastructure that doesn’t allow you to know the status, changes, or
failures in your infrastructure.
A gap can cause the engineering / monitoring team to miss a failure or
not identify the cause of a failure.
If you don’t know where your monitoring gaps exist, you won’t know
the risk to your business / customer.

Identifying Monitoring Gaps
Break things down by business services.
Review what areas of the network are not covered by Orion or
other tools.
Review previous outages to determine what was missed.

Evaluate the Monitoring Gaps
Many things come into play when evaluating the gaps:
• Is the risk for the monitoring gap acceptable?
• Is there budget to address the monitoring gap?
• Are there resources / time to resolve the monitoring gap?

Remediate Your Monitoring Gaps
• At this point, you either accept the risk of the gap or remediate:
• Can my current monitoring tools provide the necessary monitoring?
• Do we need to purchase additional modules?
• Would moving to the new Hybrid Cloud Observability model remediate
multiple gaps simultaneously?
• Document any known gaps, so all current and future team members are
aware of the known risk.
