This document discusses water pollution and its causes. It defines water pollution as the contamination of water bodies from pollutants discharged without treatment. The main causes of water pollution discussed are sewage, nutrients from fertilizers and waste water, chemical waste, radioactive waste, oil pollution and plastics. Sewage and waste water from factories are identified as major point sources of pollution. Prevention tips provided include proper disposal of fats, oils, grease, chemicals and medications, using water efficient appliances, and only running full loads in dishwashers and washers.

3. WATER POLLUTION
Water pollution is
the contamination of
water bodies (e.g.
lakes, rivers, oceans,
aquifers and
groundwater). This form
of environmental
degradation occurs
when pollutants are
directly or indirectly
discharged
into water bodies
without adequate
treatment to remove
harmful compounds

5. Causes of water pollution
Sewage
With billions of people on the planet, disposing
of sewage waste is a major problem. When you
flush the toilet, the waste has to go
somewhere and, even after it leaves the
sewage treatment works, there is still waste to
dispose of. Sometimes sewage waste is
pumped untreated into the sea. In theory,
sewage is a completely natural substance that
should be broken down harmlessly in the
environment
6. Causes of water pollution
Nutrients
Suitably treated and used in moderate quantities, sewage
can be a fertilizer: it returns important nutrients to the
environment, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, which plants
and animals need for growth. Chemical fertilizers used by
farmers also add nutrients to the soil, which drain into rivers
and seas and add to the fertilizing effect of the sewage.
Waste water
Around half of all ocean pollution is caused by sewage and
waste water. Each year, the world generates perhaps 5–10
billion tons of industrial waste, much of which is pumped
untreated into rivers, oceans, and other
waterways. Factories are point sources of water pollution,
but quite a lot of water is polluted by ordinary people from
nonpoint sources; this is how ordinary water becomes waste
water in the first place.
7. Prevention of water pollution
•DO NOT pour fat from cooking or any other type of fat, oil, or grease down
the sink. Keep a “fat jar” under the sink to collect the fat and discard in the
solid waste when full.
•DO NOT dispose of household chemicals or cleaning agents down the sink or
toilet.
•DO NOT flush pills, liquid or powder medications or drugs down the toilet.
•Avoid using the toilet as a wastebasket. Most tissues, wrappers, dust cloths,
and other paper goods should be properly discarded in a wastebasket. The
fiber reinforced cleaning products that have become popular should never be
discarded in the toilet.
•Avoid using a garbage disposal. Keep solid wastes solid. Make a compost pile
from vegetable scraps.
•Install a water efficient toilet. In the meantime, put a brick or 1/2 gal
container in the standard toilet tank to reduce water use per flush.
•Run the dishwasher or clothes washer only when you have a full load. This
conserves electricity and water.
