What is Communication?
 Comes from Latin commūnicāre, meaning "to
share"
 Process of sharing ideas, thoughts,
intentions, feelings through words or actions.
Model of Communication(contd.)
1. Sender (who sends information in form of
message).
2. Encoding (process in which message is
converted into understandable signals)
3. Channel (the medium through which message
is transmitted between sender and receiver)
4. Decoding (process in which message is
converted back into original form)
5. Receiver (who receives information in form of
message)
Types of Communication
Types of Communication(contd.)
1. Upward (from lower level employees to
management).
2. Downward (from management to lower
level employees).
3. Horizontal (peer-to-peer communication).
4. Diagonal (between managers of different
departments).
5. Grapevine (rumours).
Barriers in Communication
Barriers in Communication(contd.)
1. Language barriers (use of jargons and
abbreviations)
2. Psychological barriers (perceptions of the
receiver and the sender).
3. Physiological barriers (hearing problems).
4. Physical barriers (geographic distance).
5. Systematic barriers (inefficient system in
structures and organizations).
6. Attitudinal barriers (behaviours or perception)
Verbal Communication
 The sharing of information through spoken
words.
 It relies on both language and emotions to
produce desired effects.
 It is vital to teaching and learning and to form
bonds and building relations with others.
Non verbal Communication
 Process of communication between sender
and receiver through wordless cues.
 It encompasses :-
1. Body language (Kinesics)
2.Voice (Paralanguage)
3. Distance (Proxemics)
4.Touch (Haptics)
5.Time (Chronological)
7 C’s of Communication
Cross Cultural Communication
 Field of study that
looks at how people of
different cultures
interact with each
others.
 Basically of two types :
intraculture and
interculture.
