The Victorian Times
By Lucy Cotterill
The Victorian Era
• Queen Victoria reigned from 1837 to 1901, longer than any
previous British monarch . But very recently our Queen
Elizabeth has beaten her!
• During her reign ,Britain was the most prosperous industrial
nation in the world ,with an ever-expanding overseas empire.
• She ruled with dignity, setting the moral standard for the
nation and giving her name to the age in which she lived.
• The Victorians loved their Queen and were proud of Britain
and the empire.
Queen Victoria
In 1840, Victoria
married her first
cousin Prince Albert.
Queen Victoria was
the first monarch to
live in Buckingham
Palace.
Victorian Children
• During the Victorian times ,life was not the
same for children ,Because, many poor
Victorian children never went to school.
• As soon as they were old enough, Young
children were forced to sell things for money
that they then gave to their family.
• In 1880 a new law was made that all children
under ten must attend school.
Victorian Sundays
• A Victorian Sunday was often the quietest day of
the week! And an important day after a hard
weeks work.
• After morning church there were Sunday
activities to be enjoyed.
• People often wore their best clothes.
• On Sundays and bank holidays, clerks and factory
workers, on their own or with family’s in tow,
would set of on their bicycles or by train for a day
in the countryside.
Parks
• The Victorian age saw a great increase in the
number of public parks, walks and open
spaces in the cities and towns.
• These new city parks usually had a bandstand
surrounded by wooden chairs were in fine
weather bands could entertain park users.

Railways
• Railways were a product of the nineteenth
century and the industrial revolution. In 1825 ,
the Stockton to Darlington became the first
train to carry passengers on.
• Within a decade , a network of railway lines to
criss-cross Victorian England had been
mapped out and construction was under way.

Punch and Judy shows
• Punch and Judy shows were part of any village fair and could
always be found near the seaside.
• Punch remained on stage throughout the performance , doing
battle with a series of characters including his wife Judy, baby ,
Doctor, priest , hangman and Policeman.
• Audiences were delighted to see the old punch beat and whack his
way through life with his stick!(Children loved this!)
Family Entertainment
• At the end of the day, the Victorian family
enjoyed quiet games such as cards and board
games.
• Normally one member of the family would
read out loud while everyone else seated
themselves round a fire .Or everyone would
gather at the piano and sing.
Industry and inventions
• In Victorian times, there were lots of steam
railways were built including some by George
and Robert Stephenson.
• There were lots of new factories which used
machines that were designed by Victorian
inventors including Lord Armstrong who made
the first hydro-electric lit house at Cragside.
