1. Dear Parents / Carers,
Firstly, we would just like to say how well the year group behaved and acted during the exam
season. The examination staff said it was the best conduct they had seen in many years. It
may now seem a long way away and I am sure your child would like to forget about exams
for a few months but we thought we should outline the next steps in the process.
The results are released for collection from the school on Thursday 22nd
August for GCSE
exams. All students should report to the Hall from 9.00am. If your son/daughter is not able to
collect their results from school on this day, they will need to send an email from their Simon
Balle email address to exams@simonballe.herts.sch.uk to request that their results are
emailed to them.
Please note that while the exams team hope to email them as early as possible on 22nd
August this will be after the results have been processed by everybody collecting them from
school.
We have every confidence that all students will get the results they expect and require, but
here are the details of the review procedures if they are needed.
If your child thinks their grading is incorrect, there are some options and on the day staff will
be available to give advice on whether a ‘review of marking’ would possibly be
advantageous. The core heads of department will be looking over the breakdown of papers
to see if any marks are very close to the next grade boundary i.e. 1-3 marks off.
The ‘review of marking’ is a post-results review of the original marking carried out by the
awarding bodies to ensure that the agreed mark scheme has been applied correctly.
A marking error can occur as a result of:
• an administrative error;
• a failure to apply the mark scheme where a task has only a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer;
• an unreasonable exercise of academic judgement.
Reviewers will not re-mark the script. They will only act to correct any errors identified in
the original marking.
If your child does choose a ‘review of marking’ we do have to make you aware that this can
result in a mark and grade going up or down. There is also a cost implication as detailed
below. These costs are refundable if a grade is changed:
GCSE £40 - per paper (must be received by the awarding body by 19th
September
2019 and outcome given within 20 days).
Please note that it is the candidates responsibility to inform any third party (such as a
university or college) of any review of marking. An awarding body will not inform
Universities/Colleges or others that a review of marking has been requested.
To help with the organisation and administration of this process, pupils will need to complete
and sign a consent form detailing the paper/s that they would like to be reviewed, make the
required payment to the finance office and then give their consent form to the staff in the
Exams Office to put the request through. The exam boards do not accept requests directly
from students or parents. We will have finance staff available on 22nd August so you can
pay by Parent Pay, cash, bank transfer or cheque when you collect your results. Please note
that we can only process reviews of marking once payment is received.
2. Enjoy your summer holidays.
Kind regards
Mike Moss - Deputy Head Teacher
