2. Representation in TV drama by Sian Lynes
How is the audience supposed to react to them? Explain view:
The character of Hanna Marin is that she comes across to the audience as a typical teenage
girl who is interested in boys, shopping and her friends. But view gradually changes when
the audience gets an insight into the drama that goes on between “A” and her friends. This
representation of a typical teenage girl is also conflicted when the audience gets an insight
into Hanna’s past and realises that she used to be fat and not the ‘it girl’ that she portrays
now. This reflects the message to society that teenage girls, showed in Hanna’s character,
find it difficult to fit in if they are not perfect looking. And this need to fit into society’s
mould of being perfect can lead to the person not being happy at all.
