21. BLOOD SUPPLY OF ARTERIES AND
VEINS
• The larger arteries and veins are supplied by
vasa vasorum.
• NERVE SUPPLY: nervi vascularis.
22. DIFFERENCE B/W ARTERY AND VEIN
ARTERIES VEINS
--carry oxygenated blood except pulmonary
artery.
---carry deoxygenated blood except
pulmonary vein.
--are mostly deeply situated in body. ---are superficial and deep.
--are thick-walled, highly muscular except
arteries of cranium and vertebral column.
-- are thin-walled.
--have narrow lumen. --have wide lumen.
--valves are absent. ---valves are present.
--are reddish in colour. --are bluish in colour.
--blood in arteries moves with pressure. -- blood in veins moves with low pressure.
--shows spurty movement of blood giving
pulse.
--show sluggish movement.
-- arteries empties at time of death. --veins get filled up at time of death.
30. END ARTERIES
• Artery which do not anstomose with their
neighbours are called end arteries.
• Example:
1. Central artery of retina.
2. Labyrinthine artery of internal ear.
3. Central branches of cerebral arteries.
4. Vasa recta of mesenteric arteries.
5. Arteries of spleen, kidney, lungs and
metaphyses of long bones.

33. APPLIED ANATOMY
• ARTERITIS: inflamation of artery.
• PHLEBITIS: Inflamation of veins.
• ATHEROMA: are patchy changes developed in
the tunica intima of artery due to
accumulation of cholesterol and lipids.
• HAEMORRHAGE: bleeding due to rupture of
blood vessels.
