INTRODUCTION
• Food is the basic requirement of the man
so man started cultivation as the civilization
began. So agriculture is one of the basic or
primary activity. India is a large country
with variety of soil and climatic conditions
so there is variety in the crops and
agricultural methods and practices.
INDIA IS AN AGRICULTURALLY
IMPORTANT COUNTRY WHY?
(i) Two-thirds of its population is engaged in
agricultural activities.
(ii) Contribution of agriculture is 22% in GDP.
(iii) Agriculture is a primary activity, which
produce most of food that we consume.
(iv) Besides food grains, it also produce raw
material for various industries Like Cotton,
Jute, Silk etc.
Shifting
(i) It is also known as ‘Slash
and burn’ agricultural.
(ii) Farmers clear a patch of
land and produce cereals
and other food crops to
sustain their family.
(iii) When the soil fertility
decreases, the farmers
shift and clear a fresh
patch of land for
cultivation.
Commercial Farming
(i) The main characteristic of this type of farming is
the use of higher doses of modern inputs, e.g.
high yielding variety (HYV) seeds, chemical
fertilisers, insecticides and pesticides in order to
obtain higher productivity.
(ii) Plantation is also a type of commercial
farming. In this type of farming, a single crop is
grown on a large area.
(iii) Plantations cover large tracts of land, using
capital intensive inputs, with the help of
migrant labourers.
(iv) All the produce is used as raw material in
respective industries.
(v) A well-developed network of transport and
communication connecting the plantation
areas, processing industries and markets plays,
an important role in the development of
plantations.

In those areas
where irrigation
facilities are highly
developed
FEATURES OF
MAJOR CROPS
RICE
(i) Our country is the
second largest
producer of rice in
the world after
China.
(ii) In the areas of less
rainfall, it grows with
the help of irrigation.
WHEAT
(i) It is the main food
crop, in north and
north-western part
of the country.
(ii) There are two
important wheat-
growing zones in the
country-the Ganga-
Satluj plains in the
north-west and
black soil region of
the Deccan.
MILLETS
(i) Jowar, bajra and ragi are
the important millets
grown in India.
(ii) These are known as
coarse grains, they have
very high nutritional
value. For example, ragi is
very rich in iron, calcium,
other micro nutrients and
roughage.
• JOWAR is the third
most important food
crop with respect to
area and production. It
is a rain-fed crop mostly
grown in the moist
areas which hardly
needs irrigation.
• Maharashtra is the
largest producer of
jowar followed by
Karnataka, Andhra
Pradesh and MP.
• BAJRA - Rajasthan is the
largest producer of bajra
followed by UP,
Maharashtra, Gujarat and
Haryana.
• RAGI is a crop of dry
regions. Karnataka is the
largest producer of ragi
followed by Tamil Nadu.
Apart from these states.
Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim,
Jharkhand and Arunachal
Pradesh are also important
for the production of ragi.
Food Crops other than Grains
Sugarcane:
(i) It is a tropical as well as a
subtropical crop.
(ii) Needs manual labour from
sowing to harvesting, India is
the second largest producer
of sugarcane only after
Brazil.
(iii) It is the main source of sugar,
gur (jaggary), Khandsari and
molasses.
Non-Food Crops
RUBBER:
(i) It is an equatorial
crop. But in special
conditions, it is also
grown in tropical and
subtropical areas.
(ii) India ranks fourth
among the world’s
natural rubber
producers.
COTTON
(i) India is believed to
be the original home
of the cotton plant.
(ii) Cotton is one of the
main raw materials
for cotton textile
industry. India is the
Second-largest
producer of cotton in
the world.
JUTE
(i) It is a called golden fibre.
(ii) Grows well on well-drained
fertile soil high
temperature at the time
growth.
(iii) West Bengal, Bihar, Assam,
Orissa & Meghalaya are
the major jute producing
states.
(iv) Use to make sacks, mats,
ropes, carpets etc. faces
stiff competition from
synthetic fibre.
VEGETABLES
• India produce
about 13% of the
worlds vegetables.
• India is a major
producer of Pea,
Cauliflower, Onion,
Cabbage, Tomato,
Brinjal and Potato.
MAIZE
(i) It is used as both as
food and fodder.
(ii) It is Kharif crops but in
some areas like Bihar
it is also grown as Rabi
Crop.
(iii) Use of modern inputs
such as HIV seeds,
fertilizers and
irrigation have
contributed to the
increasing production
of Maize.
PULSES
(i) India is the largest
producer as well as
consumers of pulses in the
world.
(ii) Pulses are the major
source of protein in a
vegetarian diet.
(iii) They need less moisture
and survive even in dry
conditions.
(iv) They are mostly grown in
rotation with other crops
because being leguminous
crops they help in restoring
fertility by fixing nitrogen
except Arhar.
OIL SEEDS
(i) India is the largest
producer in the
world.
(ii) They cover
approximately 12%
of the total cropped
area of India.
(iii) They are the raw
materials for soap,
cosmetics and
ointments.
TEA
(i) It is a plantation crop.
(ii) It is a beverage crop introduced by Britishers.
(iii) Labour intensive cultivation and industry.
(iv) India is leading producer and exporter of tea.
COFFEE
(i) India produce good
quality coffee
Arabica brought
from Yemen.
(ii) India produce 3.2%
of world’s coffee
production.
TECHNOLOGICAL REFORMS
The Green Revolution technological based on the use of
package technology and some of the strategies initiated
to improve the lot of Indian agriculture like
(i) Tube-wells and pumps
(ii) Tractors, trucks, trolleys, etc.
(iii) Tillers, threshers, harvesters, etc.
(iv) HYV seeds
(v) Fertilizers
(vi) New means of irrigation, like drip irrigation and
sprinklers
(vii)Pesticides, insecticides, etc.
BHOODAN-GRAMDAN
• Shri Ram Chandra Reddy and offered
80 acres of land of be distributed
among 80 land-less villagers. This act
was known as ‘Bhoodan’.
• Many land-owners chose to provide
some part of their land to the poor
farmer due to the fear of land ceiling
act. was known as Gramdan.
• This Bhoodan-Gramdan movement
initiated by Vinoba Bhave is also
known as the Blood-less Revolution.
Contribution of agriculture
• Agriculture has been the backbone of the Indian
economy though its share in the Gross Domestic
Product (GDP) has registered a declining trend
from 1951 onwards.
• Yet its share in providing employment and
livelihood to the population continues to be as
higher 63%.
• The Government of India made concerted
efforts to modernize agriculture.
• By establishment of Indian Council
of Agricultural Research (ICAR),
agricultural universities, veterinary
services and animal breeding
centres, horticulture development,
research and development in the
field of meteorology and weather
forecast.
• Apart from this, improving the
rural infrastructure was also
considered essential for the same.
