Health promotion in hospitals and
community
• In hospitals or institutional nursing, due to shortage of staff,
lack of time and presence of other constraints nurses are
generally limited to illness focused care. Health promotive
care requires more than illness related care
• Community health nursing provides greater opportunity to
develop nursing practice that is more compatible with the
health promotion goal of nursing . The reasons behind are:
Health promotion in hospitals and
community
• In community health nursing settings, nurses are
more responsible for directing the nursing care she
or he provides. She can take independent decisions
for care. She also decides how long the care will be
provided and terminated for a patient
• This cooperation offers a greater opportunity for
health promotive goals
Health promotion in hospitals and
community
• When care of focus is not on acute illness in a
community health care setting, it is somewhat easier
to direct nursing care toward achieving greater
levels of health.
Nurses role in Health Promotion

implementation and evaluation of health goal

increase their levels of health, to develop and choose
health promoting options
• Educate client to be effective health care consumers

promoting behaviours
• Advocate in the community for changes that
promote a healthy environment

promotion
• Information dissemination (health education)
• Health risk appraisal and wellness assessment
(nutritional intervention)
• Lifestyle and behavioral change
• Environmental control programs
Approaches in Health Promotion
• Healthy population (targeting all life stages and
groups). This encourages initiatives that focus on the
health needs and contributions of people at every
life stage.
• Healthy lifestyle focuses more on the behaviour of
individuals and how their decisions and actions can
lead to healthier outcomes.
Approaches in Health Promotion

and environmental conditions that are favourable to
good health
• Others includes prevention (immunization), health
education, protection (laws and policy)
