The document discusses the potential for organic food restaurants in India. It notes that while 70% of organic agriculture in India is currently exported for higher prices abroad, the domestic organic food market is growing due to increased media attention on the health risks of pesticides, government promotion, and projections that the global organic market will reach $102 billion by 2020. It outlines some existing organic cafes and restaurants in India, the variety of products they offer, and competitors internationally. It concludes that with increased pesticide use, the domestic organic food market is poised to grow substantially in the next 3-4 years, appealing to both domestic health concerns and the preferences of foreign tourists.

Market Conditions
Currently, about 70 per cent of organic agriculture items produced in India [are being
exported. Why, you ask? Big bucks, clearly. Organic products fetch a 20-30 per cent higher
price than inorganic products in the world market.
According to the Indian Competence Centre for Organic Agriculture, the global market for
organically produced foods is $26 billion and is estimated to increase to $102 billion by 2020.
As part of 10th Five Year Plan (2002-07), the government earmarked Rs 100 crore (Rs 1
billion) for the promotion of sustainable agriculture in the country, from the establishing of
national organic standards under NPOP (National Programme for Organic Production),
putting in place a system of certification for products
The media is also now focusing on the ill effects of having non-organic food and advanntages
of having organic food.
Example a lead Televison show hosted by Aamir Khan on his one of the episode (24th
June 2012) of Satyamev Jayate asked this very same question: is the food we eat
safe? In shocking revelations, the answer seemed to become more and more obvious.
What we consume in terms of fruits, vegetables and grains is hazardous! The overdose
of pesticides sprayed in farms leads to an increase in health problems that have a long
lasting effect.
