INTRODUCTION
The word journal comes from the Anglo-
French term Jurnal, was first used in the 15th
century.
A journal is a periodical dealing especially with
matters of current interest.
Journals that are available in an electronic
format are known as e-journals.
DEFINITION
According to The Harrods Librarians Glossary ,
an e-journal is
“A journal for which the full
end product is available on optical disc,
over a network or in any other electronic
form.”
E-journal
The ALA Glossary of Library and Information
Science defines e-journal as:
“ A journal is a periodical especially
one containing scholarly article and/or
disseminating current information on research
and development in a particular subject field.
If this task is done by and electronic media
then it may be called e-journal.”
OTHER NAMES FOR E-JOURNALS
E-journals are known today by different names
such as:
Online Journals
Electronic Serials
Electronic Periodicals
Virtual Journals
Digital Serials

E-Journals can be accessed online or in the form
of a CD. The online version has:

Online version of printed journals
Online equivalent of print journals with

• Technical barriers – hardware and software,
network connection, etc.
• Infrastructure snags – bandwidth and load
shedding issues, etc.
• Require skills and training to use.
• Costs to acquire e-resources can be high-
technology and content.
• User unfriendliness depends on platform.

• Up –to-date information
• Convenient :information at your
fingertips
• Value – added features: search facilities
other links, video, graphics, audio,
dictionary, etc.
• Export, email, cite, print, save, make
notes.

singularly are:
Indian Journal of Cancer
The Indian Journal of
Pediatrics.
Indian Journal of Critical
Care Medicine.
CONCLUSION
E-journals are scholarly journals or
intellectual magazines that can be accessed
via electronic transmission.
They are the electronic version of the
traditional journals with additional features.
They form an important part of the scholars
research material.
