usinesses have always been thought of being more about making
Bmoney and less about everything else. Stories have always been afloat
about how the businessmen would go to any extent ignoring people just
to rake some more profits. But change, being the only permanent, businesses
too has had a facelift and the beneficiary is the human life.
Employees or workforce are now receiving their long due. A company’s
admiration or greatness factor is not just dependent on its turnover but also the
employee satisfaction index and the workplace environment. The employees
have now found their voice and are in a much commanding position than ever
before! The competition to get the best minds, the social media network, and
the demanding consumerism are all factors that have fuelled the shift of
business being more humane. This has resulted in emphasis being put on
upliftment and creation of a healthy workplace environment so that the
employees are at their productive best.
Healthy Workplace Environment is essential to maintain employee morale,
their productivity and overall seamless operations of a company. And by
healthy, we mean both physically and mentally. The physical workplace factors
involve workstations, chairs, desks, ventilation, lighting, safety measures and
more. The mental health indicators are hard to capture and address and include
stress, work-life balance, motivation, peer and managerial pressure and other
factors.
Companies are now investing time and money in providing a healthy
workplace environment that is conducive to the overall growth of employees
who spend a major part of their day at the workplace. Ergonomic furniture,
open spaces, recreational rooms, desk personalization to a certain extent, ,
creating green and soothing corners, naturally lit and well-ventilated spaces
etc. take care of the physical part. To create a mentally satisfying environment,
companies are emphasizing on open communication, transparency in
managerial processes, flexible schedules, personal and one-to-one counselling,
rewards and recognition and more employee engagement activities.
Employees are not just working assets of a company but brand ambassadors
too. A healthy employee speaks a lot about the company’s repute than a paid

He took over operations in 1983, from
the reigns of his father, late C.M
Surana, and is aptly supported by his
younger brother Anand Surana who
joined him 1993 and currently holds
the Director’s position in the
company. Speaking fondly of his
father, he says “My father’s ability to
pick up the chemistry of a drug was
amazing. He lived and breathed
business and inculcated the same
values in us.”
The duo brought in fresh ideas,

circumstances and achieve extraordinary success.

part of our life. No doubt
they keep us connected with the
world, but at times, they can get on
one’s nerves and invade our privacy.
On any given day, there are about
three to four spam and marketing
calls we do not want to attend and
dozens of messages that we can do
without. CallApp is one company
with an app to manage such
avoidable and unnecessary calls and
their idea now reverberates across the
world with millions of people using
the app to block such intrusion of
privacy.
In an interview with Insights
Success, Amit On, Founder and
CEO of CallApp narrates the story
of the app that has found its way into
millions of mobile phones bringing
peace and privacy.
1. Kindly brief us about the
company. Enlighten us with the
foundation story and a brief detail
of the initial days of the company.
CallApp Founder and CEO, Amit
On, was inspired to start the
company after facing a common
scenario experienced by almost
everyone at some point. In an
important meeting, his mobile rang
with an unknown number. Amit
found himself on the end of a spam
call. It was then that he decided that

information already publically
available, it made no sense to be
ignorant as to who was calling. This
pivotal moment led Amit to launch
CallApp, using smart data to create
proprietary algorithms which are
now the backbone of CallApp. Now
every contact and number in your
phone is identified and you can carry
on with your business without the
hassle of spam calls.
2. Brief us about the Founder/CEO
of the company? Share with us the
struggle or hardship story that
worked as the strength behind the
success of the company.
Amit started his journey at a young
age, starting his first tech company, a
popular BBS, at age 14. A few years
later at 16, the internet arrived and
changed his life forever. While still
in high school, Amit worked for two
different startups, both later acquired
by larger companies. At 18, Amit’s
passion and leadership qualities
landed him a position in the IDF’s
Special Intelligence Technology
Unit. After the IDF, Amit joined a
startup called Followap as a
developer. Once again, Amit excelled
in his work and climbed the ladder to
become Chief Architect. Followap
was then acquired for approximately
$140M by US company Neustar.
Following his successes at Followap,
he joined the startup Amobee as the
company’s CTO for four years. After
years of hard work, Amobee was
acquired by Singtel for
approximately $340M. When Amit
decided to create CallApp, it was out
of a profound desire to empower
people with more caller contact
information, all in one easy place.
3. Please tell us about the business
model you follow and the service
you provide that makes the
company unique in the mid of the
cut-throat competition.
What makes CallApp unique is that
we truly provide the best Caller ID
service on the market. CallApp is the
whole package, providing a full-
blown communication ID including
phone call, text message, WhatsApp
message identification among others.
CallApp is a fully personalized
experience that lets you see exactly

4. Tell us about the services you
provide through your venture.
The CallApp Platform connects each
phone to its universal social contact
book of over three billion phone
numbers using algorithms to identify
people and businesses. The CallApp
community defends one another by
reporting spam calls, so these
reported numbers are instantly
blocked for other users. CallApp can

CallApp recently launched Incognito
Calls, which tackles the pressing

space. With the ability to easily
switch to Incognito, callers can make

having the confidence to call and

towards improvement.
5. Is your company part of any
philanthropic service?
CallApp has long been involved in
an international internship program
that gives graduates a taste of the
start-up ecosystem. CallApp prides

high-tech field. The company
welcomes and nurtures young talent
from all over the world. From the
outset, CallApp has hosted interns
from diverse countries and
backgrounds and fostered invaluable
opportunities to learn and grow in
their careers. Interns leave CallApp

many go on to have successful
careers in the industry. Our current
Product Marketing Manager started
as an intern with CallApp, learning
about the industry from the ground
up, only to assume the position of
manager within half a year.
6. Where is this company different

have all had lead roles in their
country’s Special Intelligence
Technology Units. They bring a

7. Brief us about the future of the
company or the goal it has set to

era of innovation we are
experiencing. From our start as
simply a Caller ID app, we have

blocking, call recording, social
dialer, amongst others. Our
dedicated team is endlessly working
on way to increase the UX and value
for each user.
8. Advise for the budding
entrepreneurs who are trying to
embark in the same field.
Our advice for young and aspiring
leaders is simple - never give up.
According to CEO and Founder,
Amit On, “There are times when you
will fail, but this is a learning curve.
You need to get back on your feet and
give it another shot. Nothing perfect
is done on the first try”. Amit also
believes that since every industry is
growing at an exceptional rate, being
able to adapt to any circumstance is a
must for leaders in the 21st century.
Also, he mentioned that reliability is
essential, “You need to say what you
mean and mean what you say”. Amit
believes that in the workplace, as
with anything in life, you need to be
confident in yourself in order to
prosper.

OtodatoBridging Gaps for Connected Vehicles
Having a new technology is good, but getting
that technology to work at the lowest level is
the greatest thing. The Internet of Things (IoT)
is being touted as the next big thing, but for that it truly
needs to reach the masses.
The following Interview with the Co-founder & CEO
of Otodato, Rajan Malhotra, shows us how the
company is bridging the huge gap in the adoption of IoT
in the Indian Automobile Sector through its value added
services platform.
1. Kindly brief us about the company. Enlighten us
with the foundation story and the brief details of the
company’s initial days?
Unlike any other startup idea story, ours is however
unconventional. Instead of having a eureka moment, our
CEO, Rajan, spent a lot of time and effort into research
of the idea behind this thought. With a fair understanding
of the IoT market and working closely with the industry
stakeholders for about 6-7 months, he managed to
discover huge gaps in the adoption of IoT in the Indian
automobile sector. This motivated him to convert this
challenge into a business opportunity. Hence the idea of
Otodato was shaped and it became first of its kind value-
added service (VAS) platform for connected vehicles.
2. Brief us about the Founder/CEO of the company.
What kind of ethics and principles of working does
he/she observe while running the business?
Rajan has some core beliefs that set the foundations for
our company, wherein people hold the utmost value. We
strive to add value to people’s lives both internal i.e. our
employees & external i.e. our customers and partners.
This is the guiding principle on which we want to build
our organization. We know we are a young company and
not every prospect is going to be converted that’s why
we celebrate rejections in a bar and get ready for the next
battle, but we also love to get into the conference room
to plan the next steps when we encounter success.
According to his principles, it’s the smaller
achievements that make a difference and the larger ones
are just the resultants of the hours of effort that our team
puts in to achieve a series of small goals. We believe
business flourishes when we add value to the lives of our
customers. He follows the saying that “There is no Grey
in Honesty; only Black or White.”
3. Please tell us about the services that make the
brand unique in the mid of rigorous competition?
In the current scenario, because of the absence of the
right channels, even the already connected vehicles are
unable to access telematics-based value-added services
which are loaded with advanced features like pay-as-
you-use, sensor-generated alert based proactive delivery,

4. Tell us about the business policies, the agendas you follow. Brief us about the future of the company
or the goal it has set to mark its uniqueness in the future. Please share with us about the current
industry scenario from your perspective?
In India, currently, only 12 per cent of the market is really interested in advanced telematics. Hence the OEMs
today are rethinking their features and add VTS services as a standard in the new upcoming commercial
goods transportation vehicle systems as a driving force in the market. With the ever growing market and
internet speeds increasing by the hour, a huge opportunity for telematics shall surface that allows the
utilization of more advanced data like video and sound coupled up with the basic GPS services. This would
open up new dimensions on both consumer and enterprise fronts. As 2018 comes to an end we have already
witnessed a trend amongst the four-wheeler manufacturers who have launched their connected vehicle
programs in the Indian market. Through platforms like us, vehicles manufacturers would be able to provide a
host of VAS, giving the consumers a totally different but positive experience of owning the vehicle.
Overall, 2018 was a year full of ups and downs, difficult but crucial decisions, and full of challenges which
are common in the first year of any venture. But we sailed through and caught these challenges and converted
them into business opportunities.
5. The accomplishments and acknowledgements of the company?
Our partnership with one of India’s largest insurance companies to offer insurance products to the vehicles
connected on our platform was a major accomplishment and this marked our big step into the industry and
has instilled confidence in our team. However, this idea wasn’t accepted by the market at first as it didn’t
completely comprehend this thought. However, our conviction didn’t drop and we ended up onboarding
60,000+ commercial vehicles. We also signed our first vehicle manufacturer to offer multiple VAS to their end
customers in the month of December 2018.

technology and people who took upon

world has seen eminent scientists,
inventors, creators, entertainers, and
entrepreneurs who have changed the
course of the society and the world.
The role of entrepreneurs has been and
is increasingly becoming more and
more significant.
Defining an Entrepreneur
So who exactly is an entrepreneur? If
one goes by the dictionary definition
then an entrepreneur is an individual
who sets up a new business taking a
personal and financial risk in hope of
making profits. He or She is often
perceived as an innovator who
generates new ideas, services and/or
products for customers or society. An
entrepreneur is seen as an initiator,
decision maker, risk taker and great

motivators. They are seen as a key to an evolving and
economically growing society. They are facilitators who
have the power to get together people who have the skills
necessary to anticipate present as well as future needs and
give them the necessary resources to cater to those needs.
They are individuals who are motivated not just by money
and profits but a sense of achievement that comes with
serving humankind.
Strategies for Becoming a Successful One
With growing technology, demanding customers and a
general economy that is very fertile, the number of
entrepreneurs and their ventures is on a rise. But not all of
them succeed. Those who make it big are gratified with
money, fame, and even more opportunities. But those who
fail, become less prevalent and sometimes lost in the crowd.
So what sets a successful entrepreneur apart and makes
him/her stand out is a question many budding entrepreneurs
take their time to mull over. The world is divided over such
opinions. While there is no fixed recipe to success, here are
some strategic ingredients that have proven their mettle in
the making of a successful entrepreneur.
Following One’s Heart is the first and foremost thing that
one can do. Feeling self-motivated to start and take risk is
the first and most defining step that one can take towards
entrepreneurship. It always makes sense to start a venture
focussing on something one loves to do. Starting a
development centre serves no purpose if one has a flair for
say photography. An entrepreneur has to put in long hours
to establish the venture, so choosing a work that one
already loves to do shouldn’t sound like work at all.
Know Thy Competition is another important strategy. As an
entrepreneur, one has to study the competition in the chosen
field understanding their product, services, market, pricing,
and clients too. It will help in deciding a better price,
strategy and marketing method for one’s own product.
Minding One’s Money is vital because of it being a
powerful yet limited resource in the initial days. It is
important for an entrepreneur to know where his or her
money is going and how is it working. One must know
where the money is coming from, where is it going, the
bottom-line profits and how best can it be conserved. Most
successful entrepreneurs confess to living frugally in their
initial years of stepping into the market to be able to deal
with rough patches that can come unannounced.
Finding One’s Space by venturing into a niche and small
market at first is essential. Focussing on a small market
initially helps in catering to the unique requirement,
understanding its nuances, and better visibility of one’s new
products due to lesser competition. It helps a business to
create a new and substantial customer base to grow into
bigger markets.
The Client is the King and must be treated with all due
respect and adulation. It is essential to take time out and
listen to what the customer, i.e. end customer or business
client, has to say. The feedback, however small, must be
taken and pondered over to make the offering better.
Entrepreneurs need to connect with clients in their preferred
manner and made to feel valued. A valued customer makes
for a valued product and entrepreneur.
Embrace Change as stagnancy does no good. An
entrepreneur aims at bringing change via the venture’s
products and services and must be ready to adapt to
changing times and demands. Being flexible and adaptive in
response to customer’s demands and competition’s offering
is essential to keep the venture floating.
Entrepreneurship is not an easy task. But that’s what it is
about, taking up challenges to bring change. The world is a
great stage and has space for every individual. All it takes is
courage and strategy for an entrepreneur to make his or her
mark on this stage. Entrepreneurship puts one in a driver’s
seat and makes them accountable to customers, employees,
stakeholders, family and everyone involved closely or
remotely. Staying focused on the goal, sensing changing
demands and being flexible is the key to success in these
changing and emerging times.

Please share with us about the current industry scenario from your perspective? In India, currently, only 12 per cent of the market is really interested in advanced telematics. Hence the OEMs today are rethinking their features and add VTS services as a standard in the new upcoming commercial goods transportation vehicle systems as a driving force in the market. With the ever growing market and internet speeds increasing by the hour, a huge opportunity for telematics shall surface that allows the utilization of more advanced data like video and sound coupled up with the basic GPS services. This would open up new dimensions on both consumer and enterprise fronts. As 2018 comes to an end we have already witnessed a trend amongst the four-wheeler manufacturers who have launched their connected vehicle programs in the Indian market. Through platforms like us, vehicles manufacturers would be able to provide a host of VAS, giving the consumers a totally different but positive experience of owning the vehicle. Overall, 2018 was a year full of ups and downs, difficult but crucial decisions, and full of challenges which are common in the first year of any venture. But we sailed through and caught these challenges and converted them into business opportunities. 5. The accomplishments and acknowledgements of the company? Our partnership with one of India’s largest insurance companies to offer insurance products to the vehicles connected on our platform was a major accomplishment and this marked our big step into the industry and has instilled confidence in our team. However, this idea wasn’t accepted by the market at first as it didn’t completely comprehend this thought. However, our conviction didn’t drop and we ended up onboarding 60,000+ commercial vehicles. We also signed our first vehicle manufacturer to offer multiple VAS to their end customers in the month of December 2018. 6.
