DevConf-2018 Gluster storage is integrated with oVirt as file based storage using FUSE, enabling all oVirt features with very little special code. However FUSE is not the most efficient and scalable way to access Gluster storage, resulting in poor virtual machine performance. With newly added native Gluster support a VM can access gluster storage directly in the most efficient way. Decreased storage access latency results in a better IOPS, thus making storage more responsive and improve the VMs performance. Participants will be able to learn more on how file system access works for VMs, review the reason for potential performance issues in hyperconverged setups, and how to improve it.

Many of the open source virtualization management applications that users enjoy are based on libvirt, since it provides a normalized API for managing heterogeneous hypervisors. For Xen to enjoy this greater ecosystem of open source virtualization tools, it must be well supported and maintained in libvirt. This presentation will give a basic overview of libvirt, discuss the latest status of the libvirt libxenlight driver (also known as the libxl driver), and discuss future improvements planned for the driver.

We are building a high-performance NFV (Network Functions Virtualization) platform using Xen. Unlike the conventional use cases of Xen-based systems, such as data center or public cloud, NFV platforms require low-latency and high-bandwidth I/O for virtual middleboxes to handle small packets efficiently. It is challenging to meet such requirements in virtualization environments because of additional virtualization overhead. We'll discuss a couple of solutions for high-performance packet forwarding, including SR-IOV VF (Virtual Function), shared-memory channels for VM-to-VM communication, resolving the major bottlenecks and latency/realtime issues, taking advantage of the Xen's architecture. We also discuss how the modern hardware-based virtualization features, such as Posted Interrupts, are helpful. Finally we share the best practices when achieving such high-performance systems. BonFIRE is an european project which aims at providing a ”multi-site cloud facility for applications, services and systems research and experimentation”. Grouping different research cloud providers behind a common set of tools, APIs and services, it enables users to run their experiment against a heterogeneous set of infrastructure, hypervisors, networks, etc … BonFIRE, and thus the (OpenNebula) testbeds, provide a relatively small set of images used to boot VMs. However, the experimental nature of BonFIRE projects results in a big ”turnover” of running VMs. Lot of VMs are used for a time period between a few hours and a few days, and an experiment startup can trigger deployment of many VMs at same time on a small set of OpenNebula workers, which does not correspond to usual Cloud workflow. Default OpenNebula is not optimized for such usecase (small amount of worker nodes, high VMs turnover). However, thanks to its ability to be easily modified at each level of a Cloud deployment workflow, OpenNebula has been tuned to make it fit better with BonFIRE deployment process. This presentation will explain how to change OpenNebula TM and VMM to improve the parrallel deployment of many VMs in a short amount of time, reducing time needed to deploy an experiment to its lowest without lot of expensive hardware. Bio: I’m a french system engineer, working at Inria french research laboratory for 2 years, and involved in free software development and support (French Ubuntu community, House automation software, etc …). Inside Myriads team at Inria, I work on a few European research projects including BonFIRE (http://www.bonfire-project.eu), as well as on free Grid5000 project.

In cloud computing environments, VMs require fast access to resources like storage and networking. The hardware that the VMs access is implemented in software and/or by passing through a dedicated hardware device. Software-based solutions consume extra CPU cycles, thus resulting in poor performance. Also, these require to expose a device-model to the guest, thus increasing the attack surface. Conversely, hardware passthrough provides better performance and security but can be expensive in terms of the number of physical resources, since each device is dedicated to a single VM. This talk focuses on how Vates is working on sharing hardware resources among VMs by relying on dedicated processors named Data Processing Units (DPU).
