Cloud native apps running in containerised environments look set to change the way compute resources are consumed. However, this presents challenges to Cloud Service providers who have already invested heavily in IaaS offerings based on the virtual machine model. We will discuss these challenges, look at the services that end-users will demand and how major public cloud providers have overcome these challenges. We will then showcase an exciting new project that gives a simple method for operators to deploy Containers as a Service to their end-users, based on Apache CloudStack.

The Nuage Networks Virtualized Cloud Services solution integrates seamlessly with CloudStack’s advanced networking, supporting Shared Networks, Isolated Networks and VPC’s for KVM and ESXI hypervisors. That integration is bidirectional in the way that networks can be provisioned in CloudStack and be programmed into Nuage, as can be provisioned as advanced networking topologies within Nuage and be consumed from CloudStack. Empowered with SDN, operators can boost their clouds with networking scalability and performance which through native VR networking cannot be met.

But what about the cloud those applications are going to live on? Too many companies miss this critical step, leading to gaps in their operations, which can lead to production issues, API outages, inability to upgrade, and general instability of the cloud. It all begs the question: “Do you even test?" During this session, attendees will learn how Rackspace leverages Red Hat’s Distributed Continuous Integration (DCI) to build a better OpenStack experience for their customers while reducing the time required to not only roll out the latest version of OpenStack to new customers, but also begin upgrading customers within weeks of announcement. In addition to this, the automated testing in DCI raises bugs directly with Red Hat QEs team to shorten the feedback cycle and improve the final product.

In cloud computing environments, VMs require fast access to resources like storage and networking. The hardware that the VMs access is implemented in software and/or by passing through a dedicated hardware device. Software-based solutions consume extra CPU cycles, thus resulting in poor performance. Also, these require to expose a device-model to the guest, thus increasing the attack surface. Conversely, hardware passthrough provides better performance and security but can be expensive in terms of the number of physical resources, since each device is dedicated to a single VM. This talk focuses on how Vates is working on sharing hardware resources among VMs by relying on dedicated processors named Data Processing Units (DPU). More precisely, Vates work on offloading Xen hypervisor of storage emulation by relying on Kalray K200 DPU PCIe controllers, a hardware accelerator based on MPPA architecture. ----------------------------------------- The CloudStack Collaboration Conference 2023 took place on 23-24th November.
