Tour Promotion and Visuals – 18/2/22
Main area of activity:
Graphic Design
Rationale:
Throughout the two years, I have mostly focused on graphic design and developing my skills in
Photoshop. I started this course having had no experience ever using any Adobe products, so I
learned how to use it from scratch throughout the first year whilst working on those projects. For
the first year, I created a music video, an adventure themed project with promotional material and
animations, and my FMP, which was promotion for a film concept. Starting with the music video
helped me learn the basic skills of Premiere Pro. Working on the adventure project helped me
decide to focus on graphic design whilst on this course. When I completed my first FMP was when
I developed my skills in Photoshop and got comfortable using the tools. The promotional content I
created was a film poster and teaser poster, a magazine cover, and various advertisements and
merchandise. I also developed knowledge on the codes and conventions that are part of each of
these products, and how different colour schemes can set the tone and feel of a product. This
project also helped me decide that I have an interest in promotion and would like to learn more in
that branch of media.
Starting off the second year, my first project was to create a fanzine. This was when I developed
further knowledge in the music industry and used this information, along with the conventions of
other fanzines, to create my own magazine about the music industry. This helped me strengthen
my skills in Photoshop and following along tutorials allowed me to experiment with different styles
and images throughout. After that, I worked in pairs creating a platform called ‘The Grid’ which we
based off digital art. This was beneficial to me as it enabled me to express my creativity in a variety
of images and also experiment in Photoshop creating the images now that I am more confident in
using the tools. I also started developing basic skills in After Effects, which was used to create
animations and an ident for the website. These skills will really benefit me as I am planning to use
After Effects when creating tour visuals, so an introduction to this software was helpful and will
allow me to approach this task with more confidence.
Overall, researching into promotion and the music industry has strengthened my interest in those
topics and directly influenced my inspiration to choose this topic for my FMP. I will be able to apply
the skills I have developed over the two years to create a package of a tour concept along with
stage visuals for that artist.
Project Concept:
For my project, I am going to create a tour for a musical artist. This means that I will be creating
concert visuals for my chosen artist, these will consist of animations made on After Effects that will
change at different points in the song. For the promotional products, I am planning on creating a
logo, posters and tickets for the concert. Then, I would like to create various merchandise including
a mini zine that will include tour photos, lyrics, and information about the artist. Amongst the
merch, I would like to create an alternate album/vinyl cover for the shows. Having more time for
production for this project, as well as the half term break will allow me to create more products at a
good quality. This project concept will allow me to combine all the skills I have developed over the
past two years into one final piece, as well as express my creativity and design style amongst the
products.
For research, I will firstly need to start out with finding out about other creative directors that design
stage visuals and plan out tours and find out about their journey, this can be completed within the
contextual research. After finding out about other designers, I will be able to look into their work for
existing product research and find out about how their work appeals to a specific audience. Then, I

will need to research my chosen artist. I will investigate other albums they have made and tours
they have done to make sure my project fits alongside their aesthetic and branding too. For
audience research, I aim to cater to ages 18-24 so I will have to find out about their interests and
what appeals to them within music and music visuals. I will also need to research the artists’ target
audience in order to ensure that my products appeal to them too.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
For evaluation, I will start off with creating weekly reflections during the planning and research
stages of FMP. I have already begun writing reflections throughout the beginning weeks of this
project. This will allow me to keep track of what I am working on throughout the week, what went
well and what I would like to improve. When I reach the production stage, I will write daily
reflections as these will need to be more detailed to explain about the products I am creating.
These reflections are important to let the examiner know my progress throughout the project,
providing screenshots alongside this will help them see the different steps taken to reach the final
product. At the end of this project, I will complete a final self-evaluation similar to the ones that I
have completed this year at the end of every project. This allows me to look back at my work and
reflect on what I think went well and what didn’t, as well as discuss my feelings throughout the
project and how it developed my ideas throughout. I will be analysing each of the products from a
critical standpoint and discussing in this evaluation whether I think I correctly followed my plans
and appealed to my target audience. Within this evaluation, I will also get peer feedback from my
target audience so that I can get secondary opinions on my final product and ensure that the end
result is appealing and eye catching to them. This process will help me in future study and career
as it will allow me to look back at my work and discuss the process that went into it. This is
important in future career as I will need to promote my products and discuss my creative process .
These evaluations and weekly reflections will allow me to get into the habit of looking back and
reviewing my work, as well as analysing the work unbiased and from a critical viewpoint.
