2. INTRODUCTION
Natural gas is a fossil fuel comprised mostly of 87% methane, and is one of the
cleanest burning alternative fuels.
It can be used in the form of:
• Compressed natural gas (CNG)
• Liquefied natural gas (LNG)
3. WHAT IS CNG ?
CNG is a readily available alternative to gasoline that’s made by compressing natural
gas to less than 1% of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure.
Consisting mostly of methane, CNG is odourless, colorless and tasteless. It's drawn
from domestically drilled natural gas wells or in conjunction
with crude oil production.
A natural gas under pressure (3600 pounds per square inches)
which remains clear and non-corrosive.
It’s octane rating is 130.
4. BEGINNING OF
CNG / NGV
The First Natural Gas Vehicle 1860
The first internal combustion engine
(ICE) vehicle to run on natural gas was
created by Etienne Lenoir in 1860!
5. APPLICATIONS OF
CNG
CNG can used in both petrol and diesel vehicle by CNG kits.
The Napa Valley Wine Train successfully retrofit a diesel locomotive to run on CNG
before 2002.
Residential Uses. (Natural Gas)
Commercial Uses. (Drying, Cooking,Water heating , etc)
Use in Industry. (Plastic, Fertilizer, anti-freeze, and fabrics , etc)
Natural Gas in the Transportation Sector
Electric Generation Using Natural Gas
6. WORLDWIDE CNG
Previously Pakistan has the highest number of vehicles running on CNG in the world
and also has the highest number of CNG stations in the world numbering more than
3600.
By the end of 2012 there were 17.25 million natural gas vehicles worldwide, led
by Iran (3.3 million), Pakistan (3.1 million), Argentina (2.18 million), Brazil (1.73
million), India (1.5 million), and China (1.5 million)
7. WHY CONVERT
TO CNG ?
• Increase in price of gasoline and diesel
• Less combustion results less pollution
• Safer than other fossil fuels
• Low Maintenance of vehicles
• Reduces the risk of fire
• CNG fuel systems are sealed, preventing fuel losses from spills or evaporation.
• Being a gaseous fuel, CNG mixes easily and evenly in air
• CNG-powered vehicles are considered to be safer than gasoline-powered vehicles.
8. COMPARISON OF
CNG WITH GASOLINE
& DIESEL
Price Comparison
Fuel Type Rate(₹)
Petrol 76.23 / ltr
Diesel 58.46 / ltr
CNG 66.30 / kg
10. REASONS / ADVANTAGES OF CNG
OVER GASOLINE AND DIESEL
• CNG is Eco – Friendly
• CNG is Safe
• CNG is Efficient
• CNG is Costless
• CNG is Readily Available
• Less pollution and more efficiency (CNG releases more than 1.6 times as much energy as that
released from petrol (CNG produces nearly 40 percent less CO2))
• Doesn’t leak into ground water.
• Produce less pollutant elements.
11. DISADVANTAGES OF CNG
• CNG vehicle needs more space for fuel storage.
• According to conference in IIT Mumbai CNG has one Radio Active element, which is
very harmful for health and may cause of lung cancer.
• Engine's life span got shortened.
• Starting problem in cold weather.
• Installation cost is quite high
• Sometimes petrol seems to be good as compared to CNG (Engine Design).
• Availability of Natural Gas Stations
