This document provides an introduction to Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy. It discusses various terms used to describe PEMF, how PEMF works to stimulate cellular metabolism, and some of its benefits as shown in research studies. Key points include that PEMF uses pulsed magnetic fields to improve cellular permeability and function, which can aid in reducing pain, inflammation, and speeding wound and tissue healing. Research has shown PEMF may help conditions like soft tissue injuries, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, diabetes, and some studies indicate it may inhibit cancer growth. The document provides examples of positive clinical findings on PEMF's effects.

3. How it works
• Electromagnetic energy in the body
– EKG of the heart, brain
– PEMF can provide many benefits
• Non-invasive application
– Capacitive coupling
• No contact with body
• Time changing magnetic field creates electric
field that will produce a current in body’s
conductive tissue
– Direct coupling
• Direct contact with skin
• Ex) Use of electrodes surrounding the tissue of
interest.
4. How it works

7. Research results
• Good
– Know your customer’s issues and
research that will help
• Issues
– No bad studies, just those that prove
no harm if no benefit
– Know the results for support
– High frequencies and high amplitude.
– Earth has been reducing its magnetic
field
– Astronaut, Yuri Gagarin, orbited earth
in 1 hr, 48 min. He experienced space
sickness in absence of magnetic field
8. Research results
• Issues
– NASA astronauts returning from
space have a hard time to recover
from space with magnetic field of
earth
– Modern environment reduces the
earth’s natural exposure to
magnetic field
9. Understanding the results
• Know difference between good MF vs. bad MF. Between
Pulsed MF vs. constant MF.
• The bad MF are the ones on a higher level of Frequencies
combine to a more powerful Amplitude. Here is a graphic
showing the different frequencies use by different devices.
• 5kV/m is safe for public. 10kV/m is safe for human
(occupational exposure), we are affect at 12kV/m. At
30kV/m (cells stop growth). Stay 2000ft away from a power
line. (ICNIRP Guidelines, International Commission on Non-
Ionizing Radiation Protection)
10. Understanding the results
PEMF therapy:
Pulsed Extreme Low Frequencies (0 to 300Hz) are proven to be effective
without any side effects. This is totally different than the same 50Hz
from a 765KV line which is a continue MF with much more power
Amplitude varying form 10.1kV/m up to 25kV/m and more. Also the
variation of current of the power line also cause problem.
• PEMF Device Frequency: 0 to 300 Hz (most commonly <100 Hz)
• Radio AM: 30 kHz to 30 MHz
• Radio FM: 86 to 108 MHz
• Television: 30 to 800 MHz
• Cell Phone: 900 MHz to 1 GHz and 2 GHz
• Wire less phone: 1.3 GHz
• Bluetooth: 2.4 GHz
• Micro Waves: 2.45 GHz
• Satellites and Radars: 100 GHz
• Infrared Heating Sources: 1013 to 1015 Hz (over THz zone which is
1012Hz)
• Tanning Lights: 1015 to 1016 Hz
• X Rays and Gamma Rays: 1017 to 1022 Hz
11. Sample Results
• Clinical results (Siskin and Walker, 1995)
– For soft tissue damage.
– Advantage:
• Decreased pain
• Reduced inflammation
• Increased range of motion
• Faster functional recovery
• Reduced muscle loss after surgery
• Increased tensile strength in ligaments
• Faster healing of skin wounds
• Enhanced capillary formation
• Acceleration of nerve regeneration
• And decreased tissue necrosis.
• PEMF augments angiogenesis
– stimulating endothelial release of FGF-2
12. Before:
Viewing blood under a microscope in a body badly effected by adverse
electromagnetism shows red blood cells clumping together, sticking and
stacking thereby decreasing the surface area of the cell itself. This
reduces its ability to function at an optimum level to absorb nutrients
and heal areas of weakness. The sticking and stacking is known as the
Rouleaux Effect, see magnified blood cell images below left.
After:
PEMF therapy, viewing the same patient’s blood sample (after 8 min) in a
microscope shows the cells standing alone, increasing blood flow and
allowing each red blood cell to absorb more oxygen with which to feed
the entire body’s 70 trillion individual cells!

Before:
A lot of cartilage at several locations in both the knees has almost
completely disappeared.
After:
Use of PEMF for a period of 4 months had very successful results. The
regeneration of new cartilage between joints can clearly be seen, and
after the series of treatments she was able her to walk again.
15. Diabetes
Before:

foot amputated
“I believe that every prediabetic (with a hemoglobin A1c between 5.7 to
6.4) or diabetic (with a hemoglobin A1c above 6.4) should own and use
DAILY a whole body PEMF system, to help prevent progression and heal the
underlying damage across the whole body. DAILY use is critical.” Dr Pawluk
http://drpawluk.com/updates/diabetes-pemf-therapy/
“There is a large body of research on the use of PEMFs to reduce pain,
improve circulation, improve wound healing, heal bone, improve arthritis,
help liver function, improve pancreatic function, improve the cells to be able
to better handle the use of circulating insulin (thereby reducing insulin
resistance) and many other effects. So I am backed up not only by my own
clinical experience with improving the health and prolonging the lives of
diabetics by using PEMFs, but I’m also supported by an extensive body of
magnetic field therapy research that demonstrates the effectiveness of
PEMFs.”…

17. Cancer
In this study, 137 patients with advanced malignant tumors were exposed to what
amounts to a sinusoidal magnetic field of approximately 7 Hz, at 4000 Gauss, for 2
hours a day for between 30 to 50 days. The clinical benefit was 60%. 28 patients
had a complete response and 54 had a partial response. The median overall
survival was 12 months.

Many studies and clinical trials have been done to show benefits
of PEMF for cancer. Below are a few sample studies.

Two weeks after treatment, the growth of treated tumors was inhibited by 79%.
MRI was used to assess the physical changes in the tumors. Various growth factors,
including the development of new blood vessels were strongly suppressed. As a
control, normal skin was treated the same way as the tumors and showed no
permanent changes. So, tumors react differently to PEMFs, in a positive fashion,
than normal tissue. The results suggest short pulse electromagnetic fields may be
able to inhibit human breast cancer development and suppress tumor blood
vessel growth, and may therefore serve as a novel therapy for breast cancer.

Magnetic resonance therapy can combat cancer by directly inducing tumor cell
death by activating the pro-apoptotic pathway, activation of anti-tumor
immune response and starving the tumor cells by inhibiting the blood supply.
Recent studies have demonstrated that specific frequencies can inhibit cancer
by blocking the tumor blood supply as has been described by Anti Cancer
Research 21388791 2001.
18. For skin treatment
Effect of low frequency pulsing electromagnetic
fields on skin ulcers of venous origin in humans:
a double-blind study
Abstract
The effect of an electromagnetic field on the healing of skin ulcers of
venous origin in humans has been investigated in a double-blind study.
Forty-four patients have been admitted to the study; one-half were
exposed to active stimulators (experimental group) and the remaining to
dummy stimulators (control group). The stimulation was scheduled to
last a maximum of 90 days. The success rate was significantly higher in
the experimental group both at day 90 (p less than 0.02) and in the
follow-up period (p less than 0.005). The data suggest that the effect of
the electromagnetic field lasts even when the stimulation is over. No
ulcers worsened in the experimental group, while four worsened in the
control group. Twenty-five percent of the patients in the experimental
group and 50% in the control group experienced recurrence of the ulcer.
It is concluded that stimulation with an electromagnetic field is a useful
adjunctive therapy in the management of these patients.

19. Collagen
Modulation of collagen production in cultured
fibroblasts by a low-frequency, pulsed magnetic
field.
Abstract
Primary cultures of chicken tendon fibroblasts have been exposed for
various periods to a low-frequency, pulsed magnetic field, and the
effects on protein and collagen synthesis have been examined by
radioisotopic incorporation. Total protein synthesis was increased in
confluent cells treated with a pulsed magnetic field for the last 24 h of
culture as well as in cells treated for a total of 6 days. However, in 6 day-
treated cultures, collagen accumulation was specifically enhanced as
compared to total protein, whereas after short-term exposure, collagen
production was increased only to the same extent as total protein.
Levels of cyclic AMP were significantly decreased after 6-day pulsed
magnetic field treatment, probably as a consequence of diminished
adenylate cyclase activity. Exposure to pulsed magnetic field had no
effect on cell proliferation or collagen phenotype. These results indicate
that a pulsed magnetic field can specifically increase production of
collagen, the major differentiated function of fibroblasts, possibly by
altering cyclic-AMP metabolism.

"The up-regulation of these genes is in no manner marginal (1.7-8.4 logs)
with gene sites for collagen production and growth the most actively
stimulated."

Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) have been shown to be effective in the
treatment of fractures and spinal fusion, relief of pain in acute sprains and
whiplash injuries, improvement of skin blood flow, healing of venous stasis
ulcers, and reduction of postmastectomy lymphedema. Indeed, radiofrequency
PEMF devices are FDA approved for pain and edema relief.
