It is important to track and document every over-the-counter and prescription medication that
you have in your house. It is a good idea to have a specific list of the number of pills that are
in each pill packet or bottle. If you have any medications in your home that are commonly
abused (such as cough and cold medicines, Vicodin and other painkillers, Adderall and other
stimulants) you want to pay close attention to those.
Control the Medication
There is no denying that someone is going to need an over-the-counter or prescription

known location, perhaps lock the medication in a cabinet or drawer where easy access is just
not possible.

You do not want to put them in the toilet or down the drain because it may hurt the

Thank you for this wonderful post!
I was surfing for related information after a friend’s teenage daughter was found almost
lifeless a few days back. She swallowed her dad’s pills Behind that issue of attempted
suicide was actually a history of stealing pills, as it turned out.
The incident alarmed us, her parents, because we take for granted that our kids would never
touch the medicine cabinet. (We have mostly over-the-counter painkillers, and a few old, old
sleeping pills for my husband).
After a few hours surfing, I now know how careless we are!!! Time to clean our OWN medicine
cabinet. I hope all parents would do the same…
But more importantly, its important for us parents to be more in touch with the growing up
pains of our children.

very likely for parents abusing prescription meds to have their kids doing the same. but if its
just medicine cabinets with unused or too “open” arrangements with the contents, then its the
parents who must see to it their kids dont use the meds, right? at least thats what i do at
home. and for simple ailments, we dont resort to drugs at all, but go to asian therapies,
massage, etc. parents must introduce the same and practice it, too. best that kids appreciate
non-medical options when it comes to ailments & health problems. because lets face it. drugs,
in whatever form, can be addictive!!!
