Online virtual environments where students can learn and interact somewhat realistically have great potential for engineering studies, such as course resources, tools, and software that support learning and educational practice. Here, we present a collaborative virtual environment for interactive learning and immersive visualization with an interdisciplinary perspective. It allows users to visualize and sample complex scenarios' structures and dynamics and interact with other users in the same virtual environment. A series of controlled studies have been made in which participants were tasked with various emergency decision goals. Moreover, it can also support the following integrated functions: 3-D spatial analysis, 3-D visualization for spatial process, and 3-D spatial decision-making. The performance evaluation results confirmed the proposed virtual environment's higher usability and user satisfaction. This approach will be able to express opportunities for extending interdisciplinary knowledge in engineering education and support the students in their creativity and collaboration skills.

Presentation at Tallinn University. Archimedes Foundation fellow - Research visit during 3 months at TLU. Learning analytics is the most known type of data collected from specific technological environments that allow educators to evaluate how students are learning within a learning context. However, there are more types of data available, less-explored, that may contribute to better design educational practices. These include design analytics, which are the metrics of design decisions and related aspects that inform learning designs. Laia Albó, from Universitat Pompeu Fabra, will talk about how visual representations, authoring support, and design analytics can aid teachers in designing for learning in complex scenarios that blend the use of different spaces for learning and different types of technological tools and resources, e.g. Massive Open Online Courses. This presentation is based on her PhD thesis work, defended in November 2019.

Although Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Learning Analytics (LA) have shown their potential in Education, stakeholders’ agency seems to be threatened. On the other hand, multiple issues regarding FATE (Fairness, Accountability, Transparency and Ethics) have been raised when AI or LA-based solutions are designed and implemented. These issues have been especially acute since the emergence of Large Language Models and Generative AI. This talk discusses the quest for an optimal balance between human and computational agents, when LA tools and services are employed in a Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) ecosystem. Through the discussion of relevant conceptual models and examples, it argues for Human-Centered Learning Analytics (HCLA) and Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HCAI) approaches, where agency and FATE principles are essential design parameters. The talk focuses especially on LA/AI solutions that may position teachers as designers of effective interventions and orchestration actions. Selected Human-Centered Design (HCD) principles are discussed and illustrated, and directions for future research and development are formulated to overcome the main obstacles for adoption of human-centered approaches for LA and AI in education.

Abstract:The main goal of my research through 30 years is to understand software by empirical studies. While researchers traditionally use students as subjects to pilot studies before they are carried out in industrial environments, the supporting pillar of my working method is to set up studies with students that go beyond the contribution to scientific literature and identify benefits for other stakeholders. The four primary actors are: students, instructors, industry, and researchers Later, in our studies we have identified issues that appear at the intersection between art and software. Artistic software projects have often a social goal and are highly innovative. Our studies in art and software have given the ground for two research directions. The first is maker movement and its role in educational practices.Typical topics of interest vary from engineering -oriented pursuits such as electronics, robotics, 3D printing to the use of art and craft. Leveraging the beneficial outcomes from the Maker Movement approach and programming languages designed for children, together with a group of researchers, and artists we have designed, implemented and evaluated workshop programs. In our studies we have identified the important factors that characterize the design of the activities and the main aspects of children's engagement in such software intensive activities The second research direction is to harness the power of big data, increase collective and individual awareness about societal problems and ultimately create the needed intelligence that will lead entrepreneurs and policy makers to innovative solutions for societal challenges towards a sustainable society.

Keynote at ACM IMX 2022, XR-WALC workshop. Abstract: You dare plowing through immersive learning environments. The jungle surrounds you and entices you, but also hampers your progress. Suddenly, activities you deemed plain are out of reach, like practicing team sports, while exotic ones are readily available, like visiting the molecular structure of materials. Relentlessly, you plow on, trusting your trail of experience to support your safe return, but the jungle overgrows it rapidly: your plans meet unexpected circumstances, like connectivity issues, lack of situational awareness, or sheer inadequacy to new realities: why assess by quizzing or milestones when we are immersed in situational evidence, for instance? In this talk, I will address two main questions and provide examples and pathways to address them, by sharing my previous efforts on this regard: - How can immersive environments expand the range of educational dynamics and subjects that online learning can provide? - How can we have widespread deployment of immersive environments? Initially, I will present an overview on the multifaceted concept of immersion, a phenomenon emerging from the combination of presence within a system, and psychological absorption by narratives and agency. A panorama of current uses, practices, and strategies of immersive learning environments will be provided, and two approaches for the main questions will be provided: the concept and use of virtual choreographies for semantic-based deployment and recording of immersive content, and the Inven!RA architecture for mapping analytics from immersive environments to learning objectives in plans.

As textbooks evolve into digital platforms, they open a world of opportunities for Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) research. This paper delves into the novel use of textbooks as a source of high-quality labeled data for automatic keyword extraction, demonstrating an affordable and efficient alternative to traditional methods. By utilizing the wealth of structured information provided in textbooks, we propose a methodology for annotating corpora across diverse domains, circumventing the costly and time-consuming process of manual data annotation. Our research presents a deep learning model based on Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) fine-tuned on this newly labeled dataset. This model is applied to keyword extraction tasks, with the model’s performance surpassing established baselines. We further analyze the transformation of BERT’s embedding space before and after the fine-tuning phase, illuminating how the model adapts to specific domain goals. Our findings substantiate textbooks as a resource-rich, untapped well of high-quality labeled data, underpinning their significant role in the AIED research landscape.

Traditional explanatory resources, such as user manuals and textbooks, often contain content that may not cater to the diverse backgrounds and information needs of users. Yet, developing intuitive, user-centered methods to effectively explain complex or large amounts of information is still an open research challenge. In this paper we present ExplanatoryGPT, an approach we devised and implemented to transform textual documents into interactive, intelligent resources, capable of offering dynamic, personalized explanations. Our approach uses state-of-the-art question-answering technology to generate on-demand, expandable explanations, with the aim of allowing readers to efficiently navigate and comprehend static materials. ExplanatoryGPT integrates ChatGPT, a state-of-the-art language model, with Achinstein’s philosophical theory of explanations. By combining question generation and answer retrieval algorithms with ChatGPT, our method generates interactive, user-centered explanations, while mitigating common issues associated with ChatGPT, such as hallucinations and memory shortcomings. To showcase the effectiveness of our Explanatory AI, we conducted tests using a variety of sources, including a legal textbook and documentation of some health and financial software. Specifically, we provide several examples that illustrate how ExplanatoryGPT excels over ChatGPT in generating more precise explanations, accomplished through thoughtful macro-planning of explanation content. Notably, our approach also avoids the need to provide the entire context of the explanation as a prompt to ChatGPT, a process that is often not feasible due to common memory constraints.

Ensuring accessible textbooks for children with disabilities is essential for inclusive education. However, providing native accessibility for educational content remains a challenge. In the mean time, existing educational materials need to be adapted, for example by providing interactive versions to overcome difficulties caused by disabilities. In this context, our project aims to automatically adapt PDF textbooks to make them accessible to children with disabilities. The first step towards this adaptation involves extracting and structuring the content of textbooks. In this paper, we introduce textbook models, propose an automated extraction pipeline, and conduct preliminary experiments. Our textbook models are based on the various activities involved and provide layout and semantic information. They enable normalized and structured representations of educational content at both document and page levels, facilitating the automatic extraction process and the conversion to popular formats such as TEI and DocBook. In order to automatically extract PDF textbooks structure, our experiments, using a state-of-the-art multimodal transformer for a token classification task, demonstrate promising results. However, these experiments also highlight the difficulty of the task, especially cross-textbook collection generalization. Finally, we discuss the extraction pipeline and the directions of future work.

The content ecosystem is an often overlooked component of adaptive tutors and intelligent tutoring systems. A robust and scalable content environment and creation process is critical in sustaining the long-term usage and subject area expansion of a tutor. Open Adaptive Tutor (OATutor), a recently introduced open-source adaptive tutor, produced three textbooks worth of creative commons content with custom built hints and scaffolds and problems sourced from OpenStax. In this paper, we examine how OATutor facilitated the creation of its content over a three-year period, as well as explore its content ecosystem, including the creation process and content team structure. We argue that the created content falls into the realm of intelligent textbooks and can be incorporated into digital textbooks to make them interactive.

Integrating formative practice questions with textbook content at frequent intervals creates an active learning environment that is more effective for student learning. Advances in artificial intelligence have made it possible to develop automatic question generation systems robust enough for use with students at scale. In this paper, we analyze five types of automatically generated questions using data from hundreds of thousands of students across more than eight thousand textbooks. The difficulty and persistence performance metrics of these questions build on previous research and reveal insights into question performance and student behavior. Metacognitive tutorial activities are also generated, and investigation into students’ open- ended responses show differences in how students apply what they have learned from the text.

As more students interact with online learning platforms and eTextbooks, they generate massive amounts of data. For example, the OpenDSA eTextbook system collects clickstream data as students interact with prose, visualizations, and interactive, auto-graded exercises. A large class with a lot of system usage could easily generate in excess of a million events during a semester. Ideally, instructors and system developers can harness this information to create better instructional experiences. But in its raw event-level form, it is difficult for developers or instructors to understand student behaviors, or to make testable hypotheses about relationships between behavior and performance. In this paper, we describe our efforts to break raw event-level clickstreams first into sessions (a continuous series of work by a student) and then to meaningfully abstract the events into higher-level descriptions of that session. We first bundle events into related activities, such as the events associated with stepping through a given visualization, or with working a given exercise. Each such group of events defines a state. A state is a basic unit that can characterize the interaction log data, and there are multiple types including reading, slideshows, and exercises state. We hope that this process of creating semantic-level abstractions of work sessions can be a useful step in the analysis pipeline to give us better insight into students’ learning behaviors.

Creating Session Data from eTextbook Event Streams

A powerful set of educational tools has emerged over the last decade with the rise in the adoption of online adaptive learning content. An increasingly popular tool in this space is the “intelligent textbook” as a platform to support and distribute content for e-learning, given its re- semblance with real-life physical books. Existing efforts in this direction include the development of digital textbooks where both textual content and interactive learning activities (i.e., examples, problems, etc.) are carefully handcrafted by the authors so that they are perfectly placed to follow the knowledge acquisition-practice flow. However, this approach is very time-consuming, and it requires the work of high-expertise authors. In this work, we suggest and discuss a scalable solution: we take existing digital textbooks and augment them by using repositories of existing online learning material associated with the subject matter. We present our current work in this direction and discuss challenges and opportunities for the future work.

Reading and assessment are elementary activities for knowledge acquisition in online learning. Assessments represented as quizzes can help learners to identify gaps in their knowledge and understanding, which they can then overcome by reading the corresponding text-based course material. Reversely, quizzes can be used to evaluate reading comprehension. The predominantly self-regulated interaction of reading and quiz activities in learning systems used in higher education has been little studied. In this paper, we examine this interaction using scroll and log data from an online undergraduate course (N=142). By analyzing pro- cesses and sequential patterns in user sessions, we identified six session clusters for characteristic reading and quiz patterns potentially relevant for adaptive learning support. These clusters showed that individual user sessions included either mainly reading or quizzes, but rarely both.

utomatic question generation (AQG) has many diverse applications in educational contexts. To bring these benefits to as many students as possible, it is prudent to expand AQG capabilities in as many languages as possible. How- ever, English remains the dominant language in AQG research, and the required natural language processing tools for other languages are often under-resourced relative to English, which can make developing AQG pipelines difficult or im- practical altogether. An approach called parallel construction has been developed to leverage existing English AQG systems for AQG in other languages. The benefits of this parallel construction approach are described, and examples of questions generated from Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese textbooks using the parallel construction method are presented and discussed.

In this article, we investigate how explanatory AI can better harness the full potential of the vast and rich library of books at our dis- posal. Based on a recent theory of explanations from Ordinary Language Philosophy that frames the process of explaining as illocutionary process of answering to questions, we have developed a new kind of interactive and adaptive e-book. Using the most recent question answering technology, our e-book automatically generates a specialized knowledge graph from a collection of books and other resources and extracts questions and answers. With this knowledge graph, the e-book generates interactive and adaptive explanations that guide readers through the materials in a pedagogically productive manner.

YAI4Edu: an Explanatory AI to Generate Interactive e-Books for Education

The goal of the current study is to develop an algorithm for generating pedagogically valuable questions. We focus on verbatim questions whose answer, by definition, can be literally identified in a source text. We assume that an important keyphrase relative to a specific learning objective can be identified in a given source text. We then further hypothesize that a pedagogically valuable verbatim question can be generated by converting the source text into a question for which the keyphrase becomes an answer. We therefore propose a model that identifies a keyphrase in a given source text with a linked learning objective. The tagged source text is then converted into a question using an existing model of question generation, QG-Net. An evaluation study was conducted with existing authentic online course materials. Corresponding course instructors judged 66% of the predicted keyphrases were suitable for the given learning objective. The results also showed that 82% of the questions generated by pre-trained QG-Net were judged as pedagogically valuable.

Automatic Question Generation for Evidence-based Online Courseware Engineering

Recent advances in AI have resulted in large pre-trained language models with superior performance on text generation tasks, prompting the question of whether we can use them to generate edu- cationally useful text completions. This holds the potential to generate relevant quizzes for any educational text, greatly complementing current formative and summative tests from education professionals. We explore pre-trained language models for quiz generation on reading comprehension texts and propose EduQuiz, an end-to-end quiz generator based on a GPT-3 model fine-tuned on text-quiz pairs, able to generate a complete multiple-choice question, with the correct and distractor answers. We observed that the majority of generated quizzes is reasonable, and that generation of high-quality distractors is more challenging than question and answer generation. More generally, while it may be too early to replace manually generated tests for summative feedback and grad- ing with automatic quiz generation, EduQuiz already has potential value for formative feedback and to increase engagement during the learning phase by enhancing textbooks with assessments.
