After I began studying creative media in school, I never saw myself perusing anything else other than
that. No other subject had ever piqued my interest more than this before and I instantly found
myself engaged and was always eager to learn more. While studying Creative Media in school I was
challenged to write a script for a mental health campaign along with a comic illustration of the
advertisement. I was excited by the opportunity make something creative in an education
environment. I always found myself disappointed when it came to returning to mainstream subjects
after my media lessons and was already counting down the hours until my next one.
As well as this, I am a big fan of film and cinema and have spent a lot of time studying and
researching the production process of my favourite movies. I always found it fascinating seeing all
the roles of different people to create the producer’s vision. Documentaries which follow the making
of movies are among some of my favourite things to watch and always have. Working in film has
always been a dream of mine and watching these types of documentaries is what kickstarted that
Dream. I also gained an interest in photography from my Dd who would take me on trips to the Lake
District to capture images of nature, landscapes and small rural towns. This is something I have
carried my whole life and hold very near to me. Rural photography stuck out to me so much as it
was a totally different environment to what I am normally surrounded by. I find the rural landscapes
are often spared by the constantly changing state of urban environments, which is why I find it so
intriguing.
During my time studying media at college, I have had the opportunity to broaden my knowledge of
the film industry. I have gained valuable practical skills on how to operate camera equipment and
editing software such as Premier Pro and Photoshop which are skills I am sure will help me well into
the future. I have had the chance to work on video production as a team which has been a valuable
experience as it has helped me develop my communication, leadership, teamwork and cooperability
skills. This was very important to me as someone who has always thrived working by myself. I now
have the skills necessary to work effectively with a team which is an important skill to have for the
future. As well as this, I have also had to work on video productions independently. This gave me the
opportunity to take full creative control which I believe was important to my studies as it gave me a
good idea of my skills related to independent work. From working independently, I have been made
to take on more responsibilities which has allowed me to develop skills such as time management,
scheduling and managing large workloads such as my first-year final project where I chose to create
a short documentary film exploring the use of technology in education. I had to organise interviews
and coordinate a schedule with others to make the best product I could.
Aside from my studies in college I also have a passion for skateboarding and the impact it has on the
media industry. This has allowed me to develop a very positive mindset when approaching
challenging tasks and become a resilient, confident and persevering person who does not back down
to difficult challenges. From being around cameras and camera equipment frequently, I developed
an understanding and interest in filming and videography. I hope to not only grow and develop these
skills and expand my knowledge but become an extremely competent in every aspect of film and
media.
Overall, I am very excited to move forward in my life and am very excited by the opportunities that
university will have for me. I am particularly excited about growing my knowledge of the film
industry and what it takes to rise to the top in this field. I know that I have the skills and know how
to study film at a university level and have nothing but excitement for what the future holds for me.
