Instructor: Francis Rotella
Class times: Monday and Wednesdays 8:00-9:15PM
Location: Remsen Room 017
Email: francis.rotella@qc.cuny.edu
Office: Razran 270
Office Hours: By appointment (schedule via e-mail)
Required Textbook:
Deckers, Lambert.
Motivation: Biological, Psychological, and Environmental. 3rd
Edition. Copyright © 2010 Pearson
Education, Inc., publishing as Allyn & Bacon.
ISBN-13: 978-0205610815
Course Materials:
I will be posting powerpoint lectures on blackboard. It is CRUCIAL that you have blackboard access
so you can get all class materials. If I ever have to email you it will also be through blackboard, so it is
also imperative that you check your email that is linked to your blackboard account.
Email:
It is imperative that you regularly check your email accounts, as I will use that address to email
important course announcements. I will send all emails to the addresses provided on blackboard,
unless you notify me that this email is different. I will send a test email following the first day of class.
Course Objectives:
To examine human motivation from a biological, psychological and environmental perspective.
Some topics we will be discussing will be: sources of motivation, history of motivation, evolutionary
aspects of motivation, addictions and addictive behaviors, food characteristics and eating, arousal and
performance, stress, coping, health, drives-needs and awareness, personality and the self in motivation,
extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, goal motivation, emotions and moods, and emotions as motives.
Exams:
There will be four exams during the semester. The exams problems will be a combination of multiple-
choice, true-false, and matching. The exams will cover the material in the assigned readings plus any
additional information that is presented during class meetings. If a student arrives to class late after
another student has finished the exam, the student who is late will NOT be able to take the exam.
Extra Credit;
Extra credit for the course will be available via random pop quizzes given during class based on
material from the previous class (this is to encourage you to stay up-to-date with the material). These
quizzes will NOT be announced, so if you miss a quiz, you miss an opportunity for extra credit. There
is no make-ups. There will be enough chances for extra credit so if you miss one it is not going to
impact your grade.
Grading Scale
A+ = 97.0-100
A =93.0-96.9
A- =90.0- 92.9
B+ = 87.0-89.9

C- =70.0- 72.9
D+ =67.0-69.9
D =60.0-66.9
F =00.0-59.9
Policies:
Attendance:
Although class attendance is NOT mandatory, the instructor reserves the right to adjust students’
grades to reflect their class attendance. You will also have quizzes during some class periods, so
it is also imperative that you are there for the quizzes, as those will be a part of your final grade.
This is NOT a class that you can miss regularly.
 Exam Makeups:
**NOTE: Exam makeups will ONLY be given for serious issues, i.e., deaths, accidents,
etc. Please make sure that you are present the day of the exam, you know the exam dates
ahead of time, so plan accordingly because you will know months in advance when the
tests will be scheduled…If you miss the make up exam, there will be no third chance.
• **Also, if you do miss the exam, I need to receive some sort of communication,
preferably via email of WHY you missed the exam and you need to take it within
one week of the missed exam.
 **All exam materials are to be given back to the instructor. Keeping an exam will be
considered cheating.
 Cheating Policy: Cheating and aiding and abetting cheating are academic violations and
are absolutely not tolerated. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS. Instances of cheating will
be reported to the Psychology Department Chair and to the Dean of Students. Any students
caught cheating will receive an F in the course. Plagiarism is a form of cheating.
 Canceling Class Policy: In the event that class needs to be canceled unexpectedly, check your
email and if it’s last minute there will be a sign on the door.
 Additional Help: If you are in need of extra help because you are having trouble with the
material and/or you are falling behind, talk with me about the problem immediately (don’t wait
to the last minute) so that we can determine the best way to address your problem.
 Students with Disabilities: Reasonable accommodations will be made for anyone with a
documented disability that may require some modification of seating, testing, or other class
requirements. I would like to hear from anyone who has a disability which may require some
modification of seating, testing, or other class requirements so that appropriate arrangements
may be made. Please see the instructor after class or during office hours.
 General Behavior Guidelines:
o Please turn off cell phones at the start of each class.
o If you arrive to class late, please enter and sit quietly so as to not disturb the class.
o If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to contact a peer in order to obtain the
missed material. (This includes but is not limited to lecture notes and any general
discussion, such as points of focus for exams, review sessions, etc.)
Note: If you miss a class, please do not email me asking for the missed material, contact a
classmate who attended the lecture you missed.
Academic Integrity:
In general for this course, collaborative efforts outside the classroom between students is
encouraged. Studying together, working on assignments together, etc. are all valuable experiences.
However, when it comes time to write a paper or answer to an assignment question, etc., it is expected
that the work will be in your own words.
Engaging in academic dishonesty may result in a score of zero for the assignment, exam, etc. in
question. A second offense will result in a F grade for the semester. Please note that all infractions will
be reported to the University. Ignorance of University policies on plagiarism, cheating, or other forms
of academic dishonesty is not an acceptable excuse. Please familiarize yourself with the University
policies if you do not already know them. As stated in the 2003-2005 Queens College Undergraduate
Bulletin on page 56.
Academic Misconduct:
Academic misconduct of any kind, including cheating and plagiarizing, will not be tolerated. Any
student caught cheating will receive an F in the course and will be reported to the college.
Grading:
400 POINTS TOTAL: Each exam is worth 100 points. There will be NO EXAMS DROPPED.
Pop-quizzes will account for about 5% bonus to your final grade!

  • 1. Psychology 231: Human Motivation QUEENS COLLEGE Fall 2012 Instructor: Francis Rotella Class times: Monday and Wednesdays 8:00-9:15PM Location: Remsen Room 017 Email: francis.rotella@qc.cuny.edu Office: Razran 270 Office Hours: By appointment (schedule via e-mail) Required Textbook: Deckers, Lambert. Motivation: Biological, Psychological, and Environmental. 3rd Edition. Copyright © 2010 Pearson Education, Inc., publishing as Allyn & Bacon. ISBN-13: 978-0205610815 Course Materials: I will be posting powerpoint lectures on blackboard. It is CRUCIAL that you have blackboard access so you can get all class materials. If I ever have to email you it will also be through blackboard, so it is also imperative that you check your email that is linked to your blackboard account. Email: It is imperative that you regularly check your email accounts, as I will use that address to email important course announcements. I will send all emails to the addresses provided on blackboard, unless you notify me that this email is different. I will send a test email following the first day of class. Course Objectives: To examine human motivation from a biological, psychological and environmental perspective. Some topics we will be discussing will be: sources of motivation, history of motivation, evolutionary aspects of motivation, addictions and addictive behaviors, food characteristics and eating, arousal and performance, stress, coping, health, drives-needs and awareness, personality and the self in motivation, extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, goal motivation, emotions and moods, and emotions as motives. Exams: There will be four exams during the semester. The exams problems will be a combination of multiple- choice, true-false, and matching. The exams will cover the material in the assigned readings plus any additional information that is presented during class meetings. If a student arrives to class late after another student has finished the exam, the student who is late will NOT be able to take the exam. Extra Credit; Extra credit for the course will be available via random pop quizzes given during class based on material from the previous class (this is to encourage you to stay up-to-date with the material). These quizzes will NOT be announced, so if you miss a quiz, you miss an opportunity for extra credit. There is no make-ups. There will be enough chances for extra credit so if you miss one it is not going to impact your grade.

You will also have quizzes during some class periods, so it is also imperative that you are there for the quizzes, as those will be a part of your final grade. This is NOT a class that you can miss regularly.  Exam Makeups: **NOTE: Exam makeups will ONLY be given for serious issues, i.e., deaths, accidents, etc. Please make sure that you are present the day of the exam, you know the exam dates ahead of time, so plan accordingly because you will know months in advance when the tests will be scheduled…If you miss the make up exam, there will be no third chance. • **Also, if you do miss the exam, I need to receive some sort of communication, preferably via email of WHY you missed the exam and you need to take it within one week of the missed exam.  **All exam materials are to be given back to the instructor. Keeping an exam will be considered cheating.  Cheating Policy: Cheating and aiding and abetting cheating are academic violations and are absolutely not tolerated. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS. Instances of cheating will be reported to the Psychology Department Chair and to the Dean of Students. Any students caught cheating will receive an F in the course. Plagiarism is a form of cheating.  Canceling Class Policy: In the event that class needs to be canceled unexpectedly, check your email and if it’s last minute there will be a sign on the door.  Additional Help: If you are in need of extra help because you are having trouble with the material and/or you are falling behind, talk with me about the problem immediately (don’t wait to the last minute) so that we can determine the best way to address your problem.  Students with Disabilities: Reasonable accommodations will be made for anyone with a documented disability that may require some modification of seating, testing, or other class requirements. I would like to hear from anyone who has a disability which may require some
  • 3. modification of seating, testing, or other class requirements so that appropriate arrangements may be made. Please see the instructor after class or during office hours.  General Behavior Guidelines: o Please turn off cell phones at the start of each class. o If you arrive to class late, please enter and sit quietly so as to not disturb the class. o If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to contact a peer in order to obtain the missed material. (This includes but is not limited to lecture notes and any general discussion, such as points of focus for exams, review sessions, etc.) Note: If you miss a class, please do not email me asking for the missed material, contact a classmate who attended the lecture you missed. Academic Integrity: In general for this course, collaborative efforts outside the classroom between students is encouraged. Studying together, working on assignments together, etc. are all valuable experiences. However, when it comes time to write a paper or answer to an assignment question, etc., it is expected that the work will be in your own words. Engaging in academic dishonesty may result in a score of zero for the assignment, exam, etc. in question. A second offense will result in a F grade for the semester. Please note that all infractions will be reported to the University. Ignorance of University policies on plagiarism, cheating, or other forms of academic dishonesty is not an acceptable excuse. Please familiarize yourself with the University policies if you do not already know them. As stated in the 2003-2005 Queens College Undergraduate Bulletin on page 56. Academic Misconduct: Academic misconduct of any kind, including cheating and plagiarizing, will not be tolerated. Any student caught cheating will receive an F in the course and will be reported to the college. Grading: 400 POINTS TOTAL: Each exam is worth 100 points. There will be NO EXAMS DROPPED. Pop-quizzes will account for about 5% bonus to your final grade!
