Meaning of Educational Guidance
• The term „Educational Guidance‟ consists
of two words —
‘Education’ and ‘Guidance’
• Therefore, it is essential to understand the
meaning of „Education‟ and „Guidance‟.
Meaning of Educational Guidance
• Dunsmoor and Miller
• “Educational guidance is primarily concerned
with the student‟s success in his educational
career. It relates to the student‟s adjustment to
school and to the preparation and carrying
out of suitable educational plans in keeping
with his educational needs, abilities and
career interests.”
Objectives of Educational Guidance
• Areas of educational guidance
• Curriculum
• Health.
• Command of fundamental processes.
• Vocations.
• Civic education.
• Worthy use of leisure.
• Ethical character.
Objectives of Educational Guidance
• The following objectives may be kept in the
mind to determine the objectives of
educational guidance:
• a. The objective of self realization.
• b. The objective of human relationship.
• c. The objective of economic efficiency.
• d. The objective of civic responsibility.
Objectives of Educational Guidance
Aims and purposes of educational guidance given by Crow and
Crow so far high school level is concerned.
• a. Select the curriculum that best fits his abilities, interests, and
future needs.
• b. Develop work and study habits that enable him to achieve
satisfactory success in his studies.
• c. Gain some experience in learning areas outside the par-
ticular field of his special interests and talents.
• d. Understand the purpose and the function of the school in
relation to his needs.
• e. Discover all the courses he is offered and plan a programme
of studies accordingly.
Objectives of Educational Guidance
• f. Learn about the purpose and function of the college or
school he may wish to attend later.
• h. Participate in out-of-class activities in which he can develop
potential leadership qualities.
• i. Appraise his fitness for continued study in a college or other
school or in a particular vocation.
• j. Develop an attitude which will stimulate him to continue his
education in a school selected for its worth to him in relation
to his talents and training.
• k. Adjust to the curriculum and the life of the school.
Objectives of Educational Guidance
• After a careful and intensive study of the above cited
objectives, certain important objectives of guidance are cited
here.
• (i) To help the student to choose suitable and appropriate courses
for study according to his interest, abilities, needs and goals.
• (ii) To enable the student to know about various types of courses
available for higher and technical education.
• (iii) To make cautious the student to know about new aims of
education as the aims of education is changed from time to time.
• (iv) To enable the student to adjust and co-operate with the
curricular activities of the school.
• (v) To inspire the student to participate in different co- curricular
activities organised by the school.
Objectives of Educational Guidance
• (vi) To enable the student to improve proper study habits for the
purpose of attaining better learning.
• (vii) To assist student for better utilization of leisure time available
in school and home situations.
• (viii) To help student to overcome his day to day problems
pertaining to his study.
• (ix) To enable the student personally evaluate his strengths,
weaknesses, needs, abilities and interests.
• (x) To help student to know and co-operate teachers, class-mates,
school-mates and other official members of the school.
• (xi) To assist student about admission procedure and prospectus for
different available courses and institutions of new higher study.
• (xii) To enable student go through courses both intensively and
extensively with proper acceptance and motivation.
Objectives of Educational Guidance
• (xiii) To provide student adequate information‟s about sources of
scholarships and stipends for the purpose of financial help meant
for them.
• (xiv) To help student to adjust with hostel situations and friend in
case of boarder of the hostel.
• (xv) To assist adolescent boys and girls to adjust and co-operate
with the members of opposite sex with positive attitudes.
• (xvi) To enable the student to attend examinations properly with
due preparation for same.
• (xvii) To acquaint the student to proceed in his self direction, self
expression and self development in accordance with his best
possible capacities.

Vocational
Guidance
Meaning of Vocational Guidance
• Vocational guidance is a some sort of help given to the
students in choosing and preparing for a suitable and
satisfactory vocation in the world of works.
• It also assists students to solve the problems pertaining to
vocational choices, plans, developments, adjustments and
maturity with utmost satisfaction.
• Vocational guidance is more careful for the development
of vocational career of students.
Meaning of Vocational Guidance
• National Vocational Guidance Association (U.S.A.)
• “Vocational guidance is the process of assisting the in-
dividual to choose an occupation, prepare for it, enter
upon and progress in it. It is concerned primarily with
helping individuals make decisions and choices involved
in planning a future and building a career decisions and
choices necessary in effecting satisfactory vocational
adjustment.”
Objectives of Vocational Guidance
• According to Crow and Crow the specific aims of
vocational guidance are the following:
• Assisting a pupil to acquire knowledge of the functions,
duties, responsibilities, and rewards of occupations that
lie within the range of his choice.
• Assisting a pupil to discover his own abilities and skills
and to fit them in to the general requirements of the
occupations under consideration.
• Assisting the pupil to evaluate his own capacities and
interests with regard to their greatest worth to him and to
society.
• Helping the individual to develop an attitude towards
work.
Objectives of Vocational Guidance
• Assisting the individual to think critically about various types of
occupations and to learn a technique for analysing information
about vocations.
• Assisting the mentally & physically challenged, or the
economically backward children to make the adjustments that will
be best for them.
• Instilling in the pupil a confidence in the teachers and other
guidance personnel that will encourage him when he confers with
them on personal and vocational problems.
• Assisting the pupil to secure the necessary information about the
facilities offered by various educational institutions engaging in
vocational training.
Objectives of Vocational Guidance
• Providing information for the learner about admission re-
quirements, the length of training, and the cost of attending and
institution of higher learning.
• Giving assistance during school years so that the individual will be
able to adjust on the job to work conditions and to other workers.
• Assisting each pupil to appreciate his place in a group of workers
and to become a functional member of the team.
• Alerting the pupil to the long range training needed to become
proficient in most lines of endeavor.
• Helping the learner to realize that the success is purchased at the
price of effort, and that satisfaction on the job derives from doing
his work conscientiously and competently.
Objectives of Vocational Guidance
• The following are the various objectives of vocational guidance:
• To enable students to gain knowledge of the features, functions,
scope, nature and duty requirement of employment in which they
want to be engaged.
• To assist students to receive up-to-date and useful information
about abilities and skill as they possess in the context of related
qualifications and competencies required to accept a preferable job.
• To help students to know their potentials, abilities and interests
related to identified vocation which they want to secure.
• To enable students to develop capacities for analysing available
vocational information‟s to have a better choice in relation to
available information‟s in this regard.
Need of Vocational Guidance
• To help students to avail information regarding scope and
prospectus of various educational training and different
vocational training.
• To assist students to choose the right type of employment
according to their liking and satisfaction.
• To enable students to develop entrepreneurship abilities
within them for keeping feet in the kingdom of self
employment.
• To assist students to develop abilities and skills for
achieving successful progress and satisfactory
performance in the occupation.
• To enable students to gain maximum satisfaction out of
his world of works.
Methods/techniques of providing
Vocational Guidance
• Vocational guidance work, like Educational
guidance can be accomplished in three phases,
namely,
• (i) Collecting of information or data
• (ii) Rendering guidance on the bases of this
information
• (iii) Follow-up programme.
Methods of imparting vocational
information
• 1. Career conferences and carrier talks
• The career talks can be given by the principal in a
college and by the headmaster in a school. The
teachers can join now and then in the career talk.
The counselor if present should also do it. All the
more, the students or pupils can be asked to speak
on various occupations. Each pupil can speak on
the job of his choice in life.
Methods of imparting vocational
information
• 2. Mass media:
• Occupational information can be widely imparted through
different agents of mass media such as—radio and T.V.
programmes, press, newspapers, journals, magazines etc.
• 3. Career masters:
• The responsibility of dissemination of the job information
in the schools lies with the career masters. They are held
responsible to tell pupils what do they know about the job
market. They can deliver talks on job information.
Methods of imparting vocational
information
• 4. Displays and exhibitions:
• Information collected from different sources is to be
classified and made available to pupils. Charts, posters,
leaflets, newspaper cuttings can be displayed on bulletin
boards. Besides booklets, leaflets, books, journals,
directories and other printed materials may be exhibited
on display racks.
• 5. A course in occupations:
• Occupational information can be provided by a course
consisting of a series of group discussions or class talks
on various occupations.
Methods of imparting vocational
information
• 6. Publications:
• Special publication of some book or booklet can be
published include the occupational information. It can be
published by some competent authority, school/college or
people working in guidance sector.
• 7. Career visit or field trips:
• It implies visit to place of work, plants, factories and
business establishment. To provide the pupils direct
experience with certain occupations they can be taken on
educational tours or visits to some important industrial
plants and business establishments.
Methods of imparting vocational
information
• 8. Libraries:
Libraries can do a lot in disseminating or propagating
occupational information to pupils. Display of
books, booklets, journals & other literature relating
to occupational information.
• 9. Occupational Information can be given to pupils
through the different work experience programme.
• 10. Occupational information can be imparted through
school clubs, tutorials and class talks.

  • 2. Meaning of Educational Guidance • The term „Educational Guidance‟ consists of two words — ‘Education’ and ‘Guidance’ • Therefore, it is essential to understand the meaning of „Education‟ and „Guidance‟.
  • 3. Meaning of Educational Guidance • Dunsmoor and Miller • “Educational guidance is primarily concerned with the student‟s success in his educational career. It relates to the student‟s adjustment to school and to the preparation and carrying out of suitable educational plans in keeping with his educational needs, abilities and career interests.”
  • 4. Objectives of Educational Guidance • Areas of educational guidance • Curriculum • Health. • Command of fundamental processes. • Vocations. • Civic education. • Worthy use of leisure. • Ethical character.
  • 5. Objectives of Educational Guidance • The following objectives may be kept in the mind to determine the objectives of educational guidance: • a. The objective of self realization. • b. The objective of human relationship. • c. The objective of economic efficiency. • d. The objective of civic responsibility.
  • 6. Objectives of Educational Guidance Aims and purposes of educational guidance given by Crow and Crow so far high school level is concerned. • a. Select the curriculum that best fits his abilities, interests, and future needs. • b. Develop work and study habits that enable him to achieve satisfactory success in his studies. • c. Gain some experience in learning areas outside the par- ticular field of his special interests and talents. • d. Understand the purpose and the function of the school in relation to his needs. • e. Discover all the courses he is offered and plan a programme of studies accordingly.
  • 7. Objectives of Educational Guidance • f. Learn about the purpose and function of the college or school he may wish to attend later. • h. Participate in out-of-class activities in which he can develop potential leadership qualities. • i. Appraise his fitness for continued study in a college or other school or in a particular vocation. • j. Develop an attitude which will stimulate him to continue his education in a school selected for its worth to him in relation to his talents and training. • k. Adjust to the curriculum and the life of the school.
  • 8. Objectives of Educational Guidance • After a careful and intensive study of the above cited objectives, certain important objectives of guidance are cited here. • (i) To help the student to choose suitable and appropriate courses for study according to his interest, abilities, needs and goals. • (ii) To enable the student to know about various types of courses available for higher and technical education. • (iii) To make cautious the student to know about new aims of education as the aims of education is changed from time to time. • (iv) To enable the student to adjust and co-operate with the curricular activities of the school. • (v) To inspire the student to participate in different co- curricular activities organised by the school.
  • 9. Objectives of Educational Guidance • (vi) To enable the student to improve proper study habits for the purpose of attaining better learning. • (vii) To assist student for better utilization of leisure time available in school and home situations. • (viii) To help student to overcome his day to day problems pertaining to his study. • (ix) To enable the student personally evaluate his strengths, weaknesses, needs, abilities and interests. • (x) To help student to know and co-operate teachers, class-mates, school-mates and other official members of the school. • (xi) To assist student about admission procedure and prospectus for different available courses and institutions of new higher study. • (xii) To enable student go through courses both intensively and extensively with proper acceptance and motivation.
  • 10. Objectives of Educational Guidance • (xiii) To provide student adequate information‟s about sources of scholarships and stipends for the purpose of financial help meant for them. • (xiv) To help student to adjust with hostel situations and friend in case of boarder of the hostel. • (xv) To assist adolescent boys and girls to adjust and co-operate with the members of opposite sex with positive attitudes. • (xvi) To enable the student to attend examinations properly with due preparation for same. • (xvii) To acquaint the student to proceed in his self direction, self expression and self development in accordance with his best possible capacities.
  • 12. Meaning of Vocational Guidance • Vocational guidance is a some sort of help given to the students in choosing and preparing for a suitable and satisfactory vocation in the world of works. • It also assists students to solve the problems pertaining to vocational choices, plans, developments, adjustments and maturity with utmost satisfaction. • Vocational guidance is more careful for the development of vocational career of students.
  • 13. Meaning of Vocational Guidance • National Vocational Guidance Association (U.S.A.) • “Vocational guidance is the process of assisting the in- dividual to choose an occupation, prepare for it, enter upon and progress in it. It is concerned primarily with helping individuals make decisions and choices involved in planning a future and building a career decisions and choices necessary in effecting satisfactory vocational adjustment.”
  • 14. Objectives of Vocational Guidance • According to Crow and Crow the specific aims of vocational guidance are the following: • Assisting a pupil to acquire knowledge of the functions, duties, responsibilities, and rewards of occupations that lie within the range of his choice. • Assisting a pupil to discover his own abilities and skills and to fit them in to the general requirements of the occupations under consideration. • Assisting the pupil to evaluate his own capacities and interests with regard to their greatest worth to him and to society. • Helping the individual to develop an attitude towards work.
  • 15. Objectives of Vocational Guidance • Assisting the individual to think critically about various types of occupations and to learn a technique for analysing information about vocations. • Assisting the mentally & physically challenged, or the economically backward children to make the adjustments that will be best for them. • Instilling in the pupil a confidence in the teachers and other guidance personnel that will encourage him when he confers with them on personal and vocational problems. • Assisting the pupil to secure the necessary information about the facilities offered by various educational institutions engaging in vocational training.
  • 16. Objectives of Vocational Guidance • Providing information for the learner about admission re- quirements, the length of training, and the cost of attending and institution of higher learning. • Giving assistance during school years so that the individual will be able to adjust on the job to work conditions and to other workers. • Assisting each pupil to appreciate his place in a group of workers and to become a functional member of the team. • Alerting the pupil to the long range training needed to become proficient in most lines of endeavor. • Helping the learner to realize that the success is purchased at the price of effort, and that satisfaction on the job derives from doing his work conscientiously and competently.
  • 17. Objectives of Vocational Guidance • The following are the various objectives of vocational guidance: • To enable students to gain knowledge of the features, functions, scope, nature and duty requirement of employment in which they want to be engaged. • To assist students to receive up-to-date and useful information about abilities and skill as they possess in the context of related qualifications and competencies required to accept a preferable job. • To help students to know their potentials, abilities and interests related to identified vocation which they want to secure. • To enable students to develop capacities for analysing available vocational information‟s to have a better choice in relation to available information‟s in this regard.
  • 18. Need of Vocational Guidance • To help students to avail information regarding scope and prospectus of various educational training and different vocational training. • To assist students to choose the right type of employment according to their liking and satisfaction. • To enable students to develop entrepreneurship abilities within them for keeping feet in the kingdom of self employment. • To assist students to develop abilities and skills for achieving successful progress and satisfactory performance in the occupation. • To enable students to gain maximum satisfaction out of his world of works.
  • 19. Methods/techniques of providing Vocational Guidance • Vocational guidance work, like Educational guidance can be accomplished in three phases, namely, • (i) Collecting of information or data • (ii) Rendering guidance on the bases of this information • (iii) Follow-up programme.
  • 20. Methods of imparting vocational information • 1. Career conferences and carrier talks • The career talks can be given by the principal in a college and by the headmaster in a school. The teachers can join now and then in the career talk. The counselor if present should also do it. All the more, the students or pupils can be asked to speak on various occupations. Each pupil can speak on the job of his choice in life.
  • 21. Methods of imparting vocational information • 2. Mass media: • Occupational information can be widely imparted through different agents of mass media such as—radio and T.V. programmes, press, newspapers, journals, magazines etc. • 3. Career masters: • The responsibility of dissemination of the job information in the schools lies with the career masters. They are held responsible to tell pupils what do they know about the job market. They can deliver talks on job information.
  • 22. Methods of imparting vocational information • 4. Displays and exhibitions: • Information collected from different sources is to be classified and made available to pupils. Charts, posters, leaflets, newspaper cuttings can be displayed on bulletin boards. Besides booklets, leaflets, books, journals, directories and other printed materials may be exhibited on display racks. • 5. A course in occupations: • Occupational information can be provided by a course consisting of a series of group discussions or class talks on various occupations.
  • 23. Methods of imparting vocational information • 6. Publications: • Special publication of some book or booklet can be published include the occupational information. It can be published by some competent authority, school/college or people working in guidance sector. • 7. Career visit or field trips: • It implies visit to place of work, plants, factories and business establishment. To provide the pupils direct experience with certain occupations they can be taken on educational tours or visits to some important industrial plants and business establishments.
  • 24. Methods of imparting vocational information • 8. Libraries: Libraries can do a lot in disseminating or propagating occupational information to pupils. Display of books, booklets, journals & other literature relating to occupational information. • 9. Occupational Information can be given to pupils through the different work experience programme. • 10. Occupational information can be imparted through school clubs, tutorials and class talks.
