Differentiation Through Innovation
The acceleration of technology change is disrupting all industries and provides an opportunity for organizations of any size, to truly differentiate their business through innovation. In this session, we share a number of examples of how customers are innovating on AWS to differentiate their business by improving pace of innovation, getting to market faster, creating new products, and scaling innovative ideas globally to stay ahead of the changing business needs.
Abstract: Everywhere you look data is exploding and our customers’ data strategy empowers the mission at hand. Hear from Sandy Carter, vice president, AWS WWPS Partners and Programs on how data-led migrations are allowing our partners and customers to reach new insights and unlock new value from existing AI/ML models.
We know data is a strategic asset for every organization, not just new businesses and gaming.
Data has gone from being something that was cumbersome and expensive to store, to becoming the life-blood of many a companies business model.
Over the past 5-7 years a couple of key trends have got us to this point.
Connected devices, apps, and systems now generate more data than every before
With the cloud driving down the cost of storage, customer no longer need to decide what data to keep and what to throw away
With the cloud providing pay-as-you-go, on-demand compute, organizations can now more easily analyze their data to gain insights in a variety of different ways
So If you are able to store every relevant data point about your business (which could grow to massive volumes), and have the ability to analyze all of that data in different ways and distill the data down to insights for your business, it will fuel innovation in your organization which can lead to a competitive advantage.
Companies today are using data to drive decisions like when to offer new product offerings, how to introduce new revenue streams, where to automate manual processes, how to earn customer trust, etc. All of these decisions can fuel innovation and drive your business forward.
For example,
- FINRA is able to catch fraudsters more effectively by processing exabytes of data on AWS.
- Expedia is able to process terabytes of data related to the cost and availability of lodgings to make real-time recommendations to their customers.
- Bristol Meyers Squibb uses analytics to discover, develop and deliver innovative medicines that help patients prevail.
Transition: …but customers are facing new challenges in managing and analyzing their data.
We’ve already seen how deep learning algorithms can perform dense captioning on images, but they can tell also tell stories. One researcher trained a neural net on 14 million lines from romance novels, and then asked the algorithm to come up with a short story for this image.
Here’s what the algorithm produced: He was a shirtless man in the back of his mind, and I let out a curse as he leaned over to kiss me on the shoulder. He wanted to strangle me, considering the beautiful boy I’d become wearing his boxers. If I didn’t tell you, you might not realize that a computer had produced this story.
With data volumes exploding, forward-thinking companies are turning to real time & streaming data analytics to gain competitive advantages. Customers require technology and solution providers to give them the broadest and deepest functionality.
Most of you are aware of the success that the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Racing team has had with TIBCO as their analytics partner, AWS has a deep relationship with the Formula 1 Federation. AWS worked with the F1 Federation around streaming data and analytics to help them make better decisions when it came to racing.
F1 Results:
With the help of AWS, F1 developed aerodynamic simulations to develop its next generation car 70% faster than ever before, creating a car that reduces downforce loss from 50% to 15%. This dramatic reduction ooffers the chasing driver a higher chance of overtaking and in doing so offers more wheel-to-wheel action for the fans.
The solutions that both TIBCO and AWS provide that enable Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team and the F1 Federation to be successful and continuously improve.

Many of you love our Migration Acceleration Program (MAP) 2.0 program
AWS Migration Competency partners can now be funded with partner cash in each of the three migration phases
In the Assess phase, an initial business case is created for the customer and their readiness to migrate is assessed.
During the Mobilize phase, AWS will match the customer investments for Partner Mobilize projects to prepare for and migrate initial set of applications.
During the Migrate & Modernize phase, cash for AWS partner’s migration and modernization project costs
MAP is available for AWS Migration Competency Consulting Partners
Our partners at Enquizit absolutely love the MAP program stating ““The MAP program at AWS is the most generous and well-designed program in the market to help organizations get to the cloud. AWS considered all the challenges organizations would face – migration skills, operations, upfront costs, and long-term budget – and put together an offering to address them categorically.”
<TRANSITION> I did mention that to take advantage of the Migration Acceleration Program, you need to be a Migration Competency Consulting Partner CLICK
Customers are looking for a highly scalable, available, secure, and flexible data store (or what people call a “Data Lake”) that can handle extremely large data sets.
Data lake is a complement to the data warehouse.
A data lake holds data in an unstructured way and there is no hierarchy or organization among the individual pieces of data. It holds data in its rawest form—it’s not processed or analyzed.
A data warehouse stores data in an organized manner with everything archived and ordered in a defined way.
We have tens of thousands of customers who are using Redshift. It is the most broadly used data warehouse in the cloud. These are companies like Electronic Arts and Aetna and McDonald's and Yelp and Dow Jones and Pfizer, Intuit and Liberty Mutual. And we have more and more customers gravitating to Redshift in significant part because we're continuing to iterate at a fast clip.
AWS’ most successful customers and partners leverage data to provide insight to key stakeholders and business leaders. When it comes to Data, Analytics and Machine learning, we encourage our customers to follow a systematic approach that includes:
Defining the business challenge your organization wants to address.
Develop an approach to solving your business problem by leveraging data sets that are relevant and large enough to be representative of a needed sample size.
Connect Integrate, Process and Analyze data in AWS Cloud to gain insights.
Fannie Mae an AWS customer talked about their Data Strategy and Machine Learning Use Case at re:Invent 2020. Fannie Mae wanted and needed to be proactive in managing risk in order to enable early mitigation on riskier loans. After implementing a new analytics and machine learning strategy they experienced the following business outcomes:
Higher catch rate for riskier loans (3.5% to 48%)
Increased business knowledge and data subject matter expertise and
the willingness to use a similar process in other lines of business.

With varying technology providers and types of data (structured and unstructured) silos exist across organizations. Effective data analysis depends on bringing disparate data sets and diverse data points to people and technology at the right time for analysis. By leveraging modern data strategies like data lakes and data warehouses customers can get better value from their data and institutional knowledge and outcomes they’ve never had before.
Leidos a partner of TIBCO and AWS, was approached by their customers to help them solve reporting and analytics challenges.
Working backwards from their customers request’s, Leidos built their CAADS ™ (Collaborative Advanced Analytics & Data Sharing) framework and a part of that framework leverages TIBCO Spotfire Data Science and AWS infrastructure.
Dr. Ryan Weil Principal Scientist from Leidos stated that their work at the CDC benefited from the partnership, “The end to end, fully scalable, “no code” approach shaved the amount of time it took to do analysis by a factor of six.”
