How did Christmas turn into this?
• 45% of Americans would prefer to skip Christmas.
• Christmas is now the 6th most stressful life event.
• What happened to “Peace on earth, good will toward men”?
Christmas Stress
Introduction to Matthew 1
• Matthew was a tax collector turned Apostle.
• Matthew directed his writing to the Jews.
• He wanted to prove to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah.
• Matthew wrote his gospel around 50 AD.
Matthew 1:1-3 NKJV
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of
Abraham:
2 Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his
brothers. 3 Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez begot Hezron, and
Hezron begot Ram….
Why begin with the genealogy of Jesus?
• Matthew wanted to prove the Old Testament prophecies of the lineage of
Jesus as Messiah.
• Refers to Him as Jesus Christ meaning:
• “the Lord is salvation” & “the anointed one” or “Messiah”
• Son of David – A messianic title: God’s promise to David that his kingdom
would be universal and eternal.
• Son of Abraham – Takes His royal lineage back to the nation’s inception in
God’s promise to Abraham of blessing the world.
Matthew 1:4-15 Summary
• Matthew’s genealogy ends with Joseph.
• This genealogy establishes Jesus’ claim to the throne of David as Joseph’s
legal heir (Jesus’ legal father).
• Luke’s genealogy moves backward from Jesus to Adam and establishes
Mary’s physical lineage to David (Jesus’ blood relative).
Matthew 1:16 NKJV
16 And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who
is called Christ.
• Notice Matthew does not say that Joseph was the father of Jesus, but the
husband of Mary.
• Although Jesus is not the physical son of Joseph, he is the legal son and
therefore a descendant of David.
Matthew 1:17 NKJV
17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from
David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the
captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations.
• Matthew used “telescoping genealogies” to achieve the desired number
of names.
• They are listed as multiples of seven (spiritual perfection).
Telescoping Genealogies
• Purposeful omission of names from a genealogy list.
• Unimportant names omitted in order to relate to a prominent ancestor.
• Names omitted to achieve multiples of 7.
• Fluidity of genealogical lists may reflect variations in function: Familial,
legal-political and religious.
Matthew 1:18 NKJV
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was
betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the
Holy Spirit.
• Jewish betrothal was as binding as a modern marriage.
• Legally married even though physical union had not taken place yet.
Matthew 1:19 NKJV
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a
public example, was minded to put her away secretly.
• Stoning was the legal prescription for this sort of adultery.
• Joseph’s righteousness meant he was also merciful.
• To “put her away” meant to legally divorce Mary.
Matthew 1:20-21 NKJV
20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord
appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to
take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will
save His people from their sins."
An Angel Visits In Dreams
1. Matt. 1:20…. “take Mary into your home as your wife”
2. Matt. 2:12…. “take a different route back to the East”
3. Matt. 2:13…. “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt”
4. Matt. 2:19…. “take the child and his mother and return to the land of
Israel”
5. Matt. 2:22…. warned not return to Judea because of Archelaus, and went
to Galilee
Matthew 1:22 NKJV
22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord
through the prophet, saying:
• Matthew quotes 12 Old Testament prophecies in his Gospel.
• Goal to prove that Jesus is the Messiah and fulfillment of prophecy.
Matthew 1:22-23 NKJV
Prophecy: Virgin Birth of Jesus
22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord
through the prophet, saying: 23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a
Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us."
• Isaiah 7:14
14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall
conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
Matthew 2:14-15 NKJV
Prophecy: Jesus Comes out of Egypt
14 When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and
departed for Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be
fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt
I called My Son."
• Quotes Hosea 11:1
Matthew 2:16-18 NKJV
Prophecy: Weeping for Dead Children
16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was
exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who
were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under,
according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.17 Then was
fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying:
18 "A voice was heard in Ramah,
Lamentation, weeping, and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children,
Refusing to be comforted,
Because they are no more."
• Quotes Jeremiah 31:15
Matthew 2:23 NKJV
Prophecy: Jesus the Nazarene
23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled
which was spoken by the prophets, "He shall be called a Nazarene."
• Isaiah 11:1 Nazarene is a Hebrew word for branch, or
• Psalm 22:6-8; Isaiah 49:7; 53:3 Someone who is despised was referred to as
a Nazarene.
Matthew 4:12-16 NKJV
Prophecy: Ministry of Jesus in Galilee
12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to
Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by
the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 that it might be fulfilled which
was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
15 "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles:
16 The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light,
And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death
Light has dawned."
• Quotes Isaiah 9:1-2
Matthew 8:16-17 NKJV
Prophecy: Jesus Heals Many
16 When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-
possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick,
17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
"He Himself took our infirmities,
And bore our sicknesses."
• Quotes Isaiah 53:4
Matthew 12:14-18 NKJV
Prophecy: God’s Chosen Servant
14 Then the Pharisees went out and plotted against Him, how they might destroy
Him. 15 But when Jesus knew it, He withdrew from there. And great multitudes
followed Him, and He healed them all. 16 Yet He warned them not to make Him
known, 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet,
saying:
18 "Behold! My Servant whom I have chosen,
My Beloved in whom My soul is well pleased!
I will put My Spirit upon Him,
And He will declare justice to the Gentiles.
19 He will not quarrel nor cry out,
Nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed He will not break,
And smoking flax He will not quench,
Till He sends forth justice to victory;
21 And in His name Gentiles will trust."
• Quotes Isaiah 42:1-4
Matthew 13:10-15 NKJV
Prophecy: Teaching in Parables
10 And the disciples came and said to Him, "Why do You speak to them in
parables?"
11 He answered and said to them, "Because it has been given to you to know the
mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For
whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but
whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 13
Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and
hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 And in them the prophecy of
Isaiah is fulfilled, which says:
'Hearing you will hear and shall not understand,
And seeing you will see and not perceive;
15 For the hearts of this people have grown dull.
Their ears are hard of hearing,
And their eyes they have closed,
Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.'
Matthew 13:10-15 NKJV
• Quotes Isaiah 6:9-10
Matthew 13:34-35 NKJV
Prophecy: Teaching in Parables
34 All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a
parable He did not speak to them, 35 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken
by the prophet, saying:
"I will open My mouth in parables;
I will utter things kept secret from the foundation of the world."
• Quotes Psalm 78:2
Matthew 21:1-5 NKJV
Prophecy: The Triumphal Entry
1 Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of
Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, "Go into the village
opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her.
Loose them and bring them to Me. 3 And if anyone says anything to you, you
shall say, 'The Lord has need of them,' and immediately he will send them."
4 All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet,
saying:
5 "Tell the daughter of Zion,
'Behold, your King is coming to you,
Lowly, and sitting on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey. '"
• Quotes Zechariah 9:9
Matthew 26:54-56 NKJV
Prophecy: Disciples Desert Jesus
54 How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?"
55 In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, "Have you come out, as against a
robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the
temple, and you did not seize Me. 56 But all this was done that the Scriptures of
the prophets might be fulfilled."
Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.
• Zechariah 13:7 …and the sheep will be scattered,
Matthew 27:6-10 NKJV
Prophecy: The 30 Pieces of Silver
6 But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, "It is not lawful to put them
into the treasury, because they are the price of blood." 7 And they consulted
together and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. 8 Therefore
that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
9 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "And they
took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of
the children of Israel priced, 10 and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord
directed me."
• Zechariah 11:12-13; Jeremiah 19:1-13
Matthew 27:35 NKJV
Prophecy: Gambling for Jesus’ Garments
35 Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might
be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet:
"They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots."
• Quotes Psalm 22:18
• There are over 330 prophecies about Jesus.
• Over 100 were fulfilled in His first coming.
Matthew 1:24-25 NKJV
24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord
commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and did not know her till she had
brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.
Why is Matthew Chapter 1 important?
• It establishes that Jesus was God in the flesh through genealogy and
fulfilled prophecy.
• Incarnation = God becoming human.
• Definition of incarnation: Refers to God in one of the modes of His
existence as Trinity, without any way ceasing to be God, has revealed
Himself to humanity by becoming human.
Angels announce the dual nature of Jesus (Human & GOD)
Luke 2:11 NKJV
11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the
Lord.
• “a Savior has been born”
• Natural birth
• Savior in human form
• “He is the Messiah, the Lord”
• He is God
• He is the Lord
Fully Human and Fully God
• This is confusing – the concept is difficult for human minds.
• Not a 50/50 arrangement or alternating personalities.
• 100% Human and 100% God.
• Council of Chalcedon in 451 AD description:
‐ In perfect unity, without mixture, separate, confusion or division.
Incarnation
John 1:14 NKJV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory,
the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
• As the ‘God-man”, He mediates God to humans.
• As the ‘man-God’, He represents humans to God.
Closing Thoughts
Why is the humanity of Christ important?
1. To reveal God to us – Jesus is the revealed reality of God!
• Immanuel – “God with us in human form”
• John 1:18 NIV
18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is
himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made
him known.
2. Christ’s humanity fits Him to be our redeemer.
3. Christ’s humanity fits him to be our high priest and reconcile us to God.
• Hebrews 2:17-18
17 For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every
way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high
priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the
sins of the people. 18 Because he himself suffered when he was
tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
4. Christ’s humanity enabled Him to die as our sacrifice.
• Hebrews 2:9
9 But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a
little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered
death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for
everyone.
5. The sacrifice of human blood from a sinless human was required to cover
the sins of all.
• Hebrews 9:22
22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with
blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
6. Christ’s humanity links Him with David and the throne of Israel.
7. Christ’s humanity enables Him to fulfill scripture.

the Son of Abraham:
The Meaning of Christmas
John 14:6-7 NKJV
6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the
Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as
well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

The Plan of Hope & Salvation
John 3:16 NKJV
16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever
believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
John 14:6 NKJV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the
Father except through Me.”
Romans 3:23 NKJV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23a NKJV
23a For the wages of sin is death,
 Death in this life (the first death) is 100%.
 Even Jesus, the one who doesn’t deserve death, died in this life to pay the
penalty for our sins.
 The death referred to in Romans 6:23a is the second death explained in
Revelation 21:8.
Revelation 21:8 NKJV
8 “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral,
sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with
fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
Romans 5:8 NKJV
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners,
Christ died for us.
Romans 6:23b NKJV
23b but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Revelation 21:7 NKJV
7 “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be
My son.”
 Romans 10:9-10 explains to us how to accept Jesus as our Savior.
Romans 10:9-10 NKJV
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that
God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one
believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto
salvation.
Romans 10:13 NKJV
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

12 December 13, 2015, Matthew 1;1-25, The King Arrives

  • 1. MATTHEW 1:1-25 NKJV THE KING ARRIVES The True Meaning of Christmas December 13, 2015 First Baptist Church Jackson, Mississippi USA What’s the number one thing? The Glory of God! http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HdKEr1hZ7iI/TWY2eWJdLoI/AAAAAAAAAgw/V0dVLTrGG1g/s1600/Glory.jpg 1 Corinthians 10:31 NKJV 31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. December Memory Verse Luke 2:14 14 "Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!" Please Pray For: The Pastor Search Committee Ross Aven Rodney DePriest Laurel Ditto Susan Lindsay Chris Maddux Joe Young Paul Moak, Jr. (Chairman)
  • 2. References • The NIV Study Bible, The Zondervan Corporation, 1985. • The MacArthur NKJV Study Bible. 1997. Nelson Publishers. • O’Reilly, Bill, & Dugard, Martin. Killing Jesus. (New York, Henry Holt and Company, LLC) 2013. How did Christmas turn into this? • 45% of Americans would prefer to skip Christmas. • Christmas is now the 6th most stressful life event. • What happened to “Peace on earth, good will toward men”? Christmas Stress Introduction to Matthew 1 • Matthew was a tax collector turned Apostle. • Matthew directed his writing to the Jews. • He wanted to prove to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah. • Matthew wrote his gospel around 50 AD. Matthew 1:1-3 NKJV 1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham: 2 Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers. 3 Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram….
  • 3. Why begin with the genealogy of Jesus? • Matthew wanted to prove the Old Testament prophecies of the lineage of Jesus as Messiah. • Refers to Him as Jesus Christ meaning: • “the Lord is salvation” & “the anointed one” or “Messiah” • Son of David – A messianic title: God’s promise to David that his kingdom would be universal and eternal. • Son of Abraham – Takes His royal lineage back to the nation’s inception in God’s promise to Abraham of blessing the world. Matthew 1:4-15 Summary • Matthew’s genealogy ends with Joseph. • This genealogy establishes Jesus’ claim to the throne of David as Joseph’s legal heir (Jesus’ legal father). • Luke’s genealogy moves backward from Jesus to Adam and establishes Mary’s physical lineage to David (Jesus’ blood relative). Matthew 1:16 NKJV 16 And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ. • Notice Matthew does not say that Joseph was the father of Jesus, but the husband of Mary. • Although Jesus is not the physical son of Joseph, he is the legal son and therefore a descendant of David. Matthew 1:17 NKJV 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations. • Matthew used “telescoping genealogies” to achieve the desired number of names. • They are listed as multiples of seven (spiritual perfection). Telescoping Genealogies • Purposeful omission of names from a genealogy list. • Unimportant names omitted in order to relate to a prominent ancestor. • Names omitted to achieve multiples of 7. • Fluidity of genealogical lists may reflect variations in function: Familial, legal-political and religious.
  • 4. Matthew 1:18 NKJV 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. • Jewish betrothal was as binding as a modern marriage. • Legally married even though physical union had not taken place yet. Matthew 1:19 NKJV 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. • Stoning was the legal prescription for this sort of adultery. • Joseph’s righteousness meant he was also merciful. • To “put her away” meant to legally divorce Mary. Matthew 1:20-21 NKJV 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." An Angel Visits In Dreams 1. Matt. 1:20…. “take Mary into your home as your wife” 2. Matt. 2:12…. “take a different route back to the East” 3. Matt. 2:13…. “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt” 4. Matt. 2:19…. “take the child and his mother and return to the land of Israel” 5. Matt. 2:22…. warned not return to Judea because of Archelaus, and went to Galilee Matthew 1:22 NKJV 22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: • Matthew quotes 12 Old Testament prophecies in his Gospel. • Goal to prove that Jesus is the Messiah and fulfillment of prophecy. Matthew 1:22-23 NKJV Prophecy: Virgin Birth of Jesus 22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us." • Isaiah 7:14 14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
  • 5. Matthew 2:14-15 NKJV Prophecy: Jesus Comes out of Egypt 14 When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I called My Son." • Quotes Hosea 11:1 Matthew 2:16-18 NKJV Prophecy: Weeping for Dead Children 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying: 18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, Lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, Refusing to be comforted, Because they are no more." • Quotes Jeremiah 31:15 Matthew 2:23 NKJV Prophecy: Jesus the Nazarene 23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, "He shall be called a Nazarene." • Isaiah 11:1 Nazarene is a Hebrew word for branch, or • Psalm 22:6-8; Isaiah 49:7; 53:3 Someone who is despised was referred to as a Nazarene. Matthew 4:12-16 NKJV Prophecy: Ministry of Jesus in Galilee 12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: 15 "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: 16 The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned." • Quotes Isaiah 9:1-2
  • 6. Matthew 8:16-17 NKJV Prophecy: Jesus Heals Many 16 When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon- possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: "He Himself took our infirmities, And bore our sicknesses." • Quotes Isaiah 53:4 Matthew 12:14-18 NKJV Prophecy: God’s Chosen Servant 14 Then the Pharisees went out and plotted against Him, how they might destroy Him. 15 But when Jesus knew it, He withdrew from there. And great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them all. 16 Yet He warned them not to make Him known, 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: 18 "Behold! My Servant whom I have chosen, My Beloved in whom My soul is well pleased! I will put My Spirit upon Him, And He will declare justice to the Gentiles. 19 He will not quarrel nor cry out, Nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench, Till He sends forth justice to victory; 21 And in His name Gentiles will trust." • Quotes Isaiah 42:1-4 Matthew 13:10-15 NKJV Prophecy: Teaching in Parables 10 And the disciples came and said to Him, "Why do You speak to them in parables?" 11 He answered and said to them, "Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 13 Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says:
  • 7. 'Hearing you will hear and shall not understand, And seeing you will see and not perceive; 15 For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.' Matthew 13:10-15 NKJV • Quotes Isaiah 6:9-10 Matthew 13:34-35 NKJV Prophecy: Teaching in Parables 34 All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a parable He did not speak to them, 35 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: "I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things kept secret from the foundation of the world." • Quotes Psalm 78:2 Matthew 21:1-5 NKJV Prophecy: The Triumphal Entry 1 Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. 3 And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord has need of them,' and immediately he will send them." 4 All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: 5 "Tell the daughter of Zion, 'Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey. '" • Quotes Zechariah 9:9
  • 8. Matthew 26:54-56 NKJV Prophecy: Disciples Desert Jesus 54 How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?" 55 In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me. 56 But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled. • Zechariah 13:7 …and the sheep will be scattered, Matthew 27:6-10 NKJV Prophecy: The 30 Pieces of Silver 6 But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, "It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood." 7 And they consulted together and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. 8 Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced, 10 and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me." • Zechariah 11:12-13; Jeremiah 19:1-13 Matthew 27:35 NKJV Prophecy: Gambling for Jesus’ Garments 35 Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: "They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots." • Quotes Psalm 22:18 • There are over 330 prophecies about Jesus. • Over 100 were fulfilled in His first coming. Matthew 1:24-25 NKJV 24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.
  • 9. Why is Matthew Chapter 1 important? • It establishes that Jesus was God in the flesh through genealogy and fulfilled prophecy. • Incarnation = God becoming human. • Definition of incarnation: Refers to God in one of the modes of His existence as Trinity, without any way ceasing to be God, has revealed Himself to humanity by becoming human. Angels announce the dual nature of Jesus (Human & GOD) Luke 2:11 NKJV 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. • “a Savior has been born” • Natural birth • Savior in human form • “He is the Messiah, the Lord” • He is God • He is the Lord Fully Human and Fully God • This is confusing – the concept is difficult for human minds. • Not a 50/50 arrangement or alternating personalities. • 100% Human and 100% God. • Council of Chalcedon in 451 AD description: ‐ In perfect unity, without mixture, separate, confusion or division. Incarnation John 1:14 NKJV 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. • As the ‘God-man”, He mediates God to humans. • As the ‘man-God’, He represents humans to God.
  • 10. Closing Thoughts Why is the humanity of Christ important? 1. To reveal God to us – Jesus is the revealed reality of God! • Immanuel – “God with us in human form” • John 1:18 NIV 18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. 2. Christ’s humanity fits Him to be our redeemer. 3. Christ’s humanity enabled Him to die as our sacrifice. • Hebrews 2:9 9 But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 5.
