Title: The Making of Man
Author: Ray C. Stedman
Series: Understanding Man
Date: January 7, 1968
Genesis 2:4-9 NKJV
4 This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the
day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, 5 before any plant of
the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the
Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the
ground; 6 but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the
ground.
7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
6. Life in God’s Garden
8 The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man
whom He had formed. 9 And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree
grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in
the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Genesis 2:4-9 NKJV
Genesis 2:15-18 NKJV
15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend
and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of
the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and
evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make
him a helper comparable to him.”
Genesis 2:15-18 NKJV

7. Genesis 2:7 NKJV
7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being (soul).
The climax of God’s creative work was His extraordinary creation of man.
First, He formed man (we are handmade) from the very dust of the ground.

This distinguished man from all of God’s other creatures for God and God alone
created man.
Man did not evolve from other creatures; therefore, impersonal forces did not
form man.
All the atoms, molecules, cells, DNA, lightning - none of those created man.
These are only the substances that make up man’s physical body.
The Lord God formed man!
8. Professor Richard Lewontin, a Harvard geneticist (and self-proclaimed Marxist), is
certainly one of the world’s leaders in evolutionary biology.

He wrote this very revealing comment and it illustrates the implicit philosophical
bias against Genesis creation—regardless of whether or not the facts support it.
“We (evolutionists) are forced by our a priori adherence to material causes to
create an apparatus of investigation and a set of concepts that produce
material explanations, no matter how counter-intuitive, no matter how mystifying
to the uninitiated. Moreover, that materialism is absolute, for we cannot allow a
Divine Foot in the door.”

Our own Dr. Arthur Guyton teaches us the amazing wonders of this fantastic
human body that God so well formed from the common dust of the ground!

9. Dr. Arthur Guyton is one of the greatest figures in the history of cardiovascular
physiology.
http://dcprinciples.org/membership/obituaries/images/guyton.gif
He was born in Oxford, Mississippi, to Dr. Billy S. Guyton, a highly respected ENT
specialist, and Kate Smallwood Guyton, a physics and mathematics teacher
who had been a missionary in China before their marriage.
Arthur Guyton met Ruth Weigle on a bicycle ride and were later married June
12, 1943 (they were married for 59 years until their deaths in a car accident in
Pocahontas, MS in 2003).
Ruth’s father was dean of Yale University Divinity School.
Dr. Guyton initially intended to be a cardiovascular surgeon but was partially
paralyzed after being infected with polio.
• He suffered from this infection in 1946 during his final year of residency
training in Boston at age 27.
Despite his physical disability, he was father to ten children who all went on to
become celebrated physicians, eight of his children attended Harvard Medical
School.

10. His Textbook of Medical Physiology is the world's best-
selling physiology book and has been translated into
at least 15 languages.

Dr. Guyton’s gifted student, John D. Hall, said in an article in the American Heart
Association Journal that Arthur has probably done more to teach physiology to
the world than any other individual in history!
The modest physician's hallmark discovery was proving that blood flow is
regulated by the body's billions of capillaries and not by the heart, as long
thought.
Dr. Guyton says that: the heart pumps 2,000 gallons of
blood per day -

12. The Lord God created the substances, and then He used those substances to
create man.
The Lord God formed man!
The word formed is a translation of the Hebrew yatsar, which means “to mold,
shape, or form.”
It conjures an image of a potter who has the intelligence and the power to form
his creation.
http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2010/11/07/books/review/Horwitz/Horwitz-articleLarge.jpg
God is the Master Potter Who had the image of man within His mind and Who
possesses the power and the intelligence to bring that image to life.
http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/da/14/db/da14db2862929be054417cb28acec3a7.jpg
God had both the omniscience (all-knowledge) and the omnipotence (all-
power) to do exactly what He wanted.
Second, God breathed His own breath of life into man - man is more than “dust”
or physical substance.
13. http://tse3.mm.bing.net/th?id=JN.3%2bRcUtTp38nEkNcHIhfHXg&pid=15.1
Man does not just have a spirit, man is spirit.
God is the Source of life, and He directly places life within man.
This breath of life is seen again in John 20:22, as Jesus imparts new life to His
disciples:
John 20:21-22 NKJV
21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also
send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to
them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
Genesis 2:7 tells us that man became a living soul (KJV).
• The word soul in Hebrew is nephesh, meaning “an animated, breathing,
conscious, and living being.”
• Man did not become a living soul until God breathed life into him.
As a physical, animate, rational, and spiritual being, man is unique among all
living things upon the earth.
So, what is the breath of God?
It is the life and power of God, given to man to animate him.
The Hebrew word for spirit is ruach, which means “wind, breath, air, spirit.”
• The life of God lives on and on; the immaterial part of man was designed
to live eternally.
• The question is where will we live?
14. Matthew 10:28 NASB
“Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear
Him Who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

1 Thessalonians 5:23 ESV
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your
whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord
Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 4:12 ESV
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword,
piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and
discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

James 2:26 ESV
26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is
dead.
http://lifeofafemalebiblewarrior.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/soul-leaving-body.jpg
Genesis 2:15-17 NKJV
15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend
and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of
the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and
evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
"What is the definition of evil?"
A dictionary definition of evil is: “morally reprehensible, sinful, wicked.”
The definition of evil in the Bible falls into two categories:
1) evil against God (unbelief, idolatry, blasphemy) and
2) evil against one another (murder, theft, adultery).
From the prohibition against eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and
evil in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:9), to the destruction of Babylon the Great
(Revelation 18:2), the Bible speaks of evil.
16. What exactly is evil and why does it exist?
Evil is not a thing; it is a lack of a good thing that God made (it is a privation).
Evil only exists as a privation (or a parasite) on the good.
Privation - the state of being deprived especially: the lack of what is needed for
existence.
As Christian philosopher J. P. Moreland has noted, “Evil is a lack of goodness. It is
goodness spoiled. You can have good without evil, but you cannot have evil
without good.”
Goodness has existed as an attribute of God from all eternity.
• While God is perfectly holy and just, He is also perfectly good.
• Just as God has always existed, so too has goodness as it is a facet of
God’s holy character.
The same cannot be said for evil.
Evil came into being with the rebellion of Satan and subsequently entered the
physical universe with the fall of Adam.
As Christian apologist Greg Koukl has said, “Human freedom was used in such a
way as to diminish goodness in the world, and that diminution, that lack of
goodness, that is what we call evil.”
When God created Adam, He created him good, and He also created him free.
In creating Adam free, God indirectly created the possibility of evil, while not
creating evil itself.
When Adam chose to disobey God, he made this possibility of evil a reality.
The same scenario had previously played out when Satan fell by failing to serve
and obey God.
So it turns out that evil is not a direct creation of God; rather, evil is the result of
persons (both angelic and human) exercising their freedom wrongly.
Evil exists in the same way that a wound exists on an arm or as rust exists on a
car.
• The rust cannot exist on its own any more than cold can exist without the
existence of heat or darkness can exist without the existence of light.
17. Despite the horrible effects of evil on our world, the Christian believer can take
comfort in the words of the Lord Jesus Christ recorded for us in the Gospel of
John, “I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this
world you will have trouble (tribulation). But take heart! I have overcome the
world” (John 16:33 NIV).
http://www.happychemo.com/TakeHeartLogo.png
More importantly, we look forward with great anticipation to our home in
Heaven where the ultimate evil, death, will finally be destroyed along with the
“mourning, crying and pain” which it inevitably produces (Revelation 21:4).
It is interesting that after this account in Genesis 2, the tree of the knowledge of
good and evil disappears from Scripture.
http://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?id=JN.AzB5FxAs%2b5BLtUmxQkOCjA&pid=15.1
We do not find it mentioned after that, largely because its effects have become
commonplace.
But the tree of life reappears again in the book of Revelation.
18. This tree seems to have had the power to convey immortality to man, and as
such is used in Scripture as a symbol of the Lord Jesus Christ.
http://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?&id=JN.npsoBLdKM4AKDZqShueKPg&w=300&h=300&c=0&pid=1.9&rs=0&p=0&r=0
Paul wrote to Timothy and said of Christ that He "abolished death and brought
life and immortality to light through the Gospel," (2 Timothy 1:18 RSV).
As we come to the Lord Jesus Christ, and are related to Him, we experience that
which was the capability of this tree of life in the Garden of Eden, from which
man was ultimately excluded.
We will see more of that in Chapter 3.
But what is this "tree of the knowledge of good and evil"?
That is the question that looms before us as we look at this chapter - after all,
what is wrong with knowing good and evil?
Surely it is a good thing to know the difference between good and evil.
http://tse3.mm.bing.net/th?id=JN.Beip7RkPsOZuSMo176JLRg&pid=15.1
Many Scriptures encourage us to become mature enough to be able to
distinguish between good and evil and one mark of immaturity in a Christian is
that he cannot tell the difference.
19. But, if it is a good thing to know the difference between good and evil, why did
God forbid Adam to partake of this fruit?
http://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?&id=JN.zBKz7cgr6xmjGcM4tI8aQg&w=300&h=300&c=0&pid=1.9&rs=0&p=0&r=0
We get a little more light if we look ahead to Chapter 3 where, in the story of the
fall of man, we have in verse 5 the words of the serpent to the woman.
He said to her:
Genesis 3:5
5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will
be like God, knowing good and evil."
http://biblia.com/bible/images/500/Ge1.3-5?extension=png&fallbackOnFailure=False
Everything the devil says is not a lie.
He uses truth, or, rather, misuses truth, in order to draw us on until we become
the victims, ultimately, of his lie.
But he baits his trap with truth, and here is the truth from the lips of the devil.
• "You will," he says, "have your eyes opened when you eat of this fruit, and
you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
20. That suggests a clue as to what this fruit was and what it did.
How does God know good and evil?
Think about it for a moment and you will see that God knows evil, not by
experience because He cannot experience evil, but He knows it by relating it to
Himself.
That which is consistent with His character and His nature is good; that which is
inconsistent with it is evil.
• That which is out of line, out of character with Himself is destructive, evil
and dangerous; but all that is in line with His own nature is good.
That is how God knows good and evil. He relates it to Himself and God is the only
One Who can properly do that.
• God is the only Being in all the universe Who has the right to relate all
things to Himself because He is the center of the universe!
When a human tries it, he or she gets into trouble.
The people of God's universe are made to discover the difference between
good evil by relating all to the Being of God, not to themselves.
When man ate of the fruit he began to attempt to do what God does -- to relate
everything to himself.
http://kevinmccainstudios.com/wp-content/gallery/illustration/adam-and-eve-illustration.jpg
21. Yet, as a creature, he has no real ability to maintain this kind of relationship and
thus he is constantly interjecting an unbalanced element into life.
http://tse4.mm.bing.net/th?id=JN.SUzQfRjqCXYkBFD0PT%2by7w&w=272&h=176&c=7&rs=1&qlt=90&o=4&pid=1.1
http://www.getleanin12.com/blog/getleanin12.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/OutOfBalance.gif
When man began to think of himself as the center of the universe, he tried to
become like God - but it was all a lie.
Man is not the center of the universe, and he cannot be.
As you trace the course of human history you can see that this is the seductive
lie that the serpent has whispered into the ears of men ever since: "You are the
center of life. This is your world, everything relates to you. What you like is right;
what you don't like is wrong. What you want to do is right; what you don't want to
do, then don't let anyone make you do it. You are the center of things."
22. http://www.politifake.org/image/political/small/1010/narcissistic-narcissist-political-poster-1288131984.jpg
You can find this idea throbbing and pulsating throughout the philosophies of
men, that man stands at the center of things.
• That is the curse that fell upon man when he ate of the fruit in the Garden
of Eden.
In a psychedelic way his mind was twisted, and he thought of himself as God,
and related all things to himself.
But when man does this he introduces an eccentric element into life, into
creation.
The problem with our unbalanced world today is that we have an earth filled
with about 7.3 billion eccentrics.
That is why everything is always going off in wrong directions.
But the glory of the Gospel is that when men are redeemed, through faith in
Jesus Christ, they resume once again a balanced life, and everything relates
once again to God.
• God again becomes the center of things – as He always has been.
Though we may struggle to learn this, eventually all the thrust and purpose of the
Gospel is here, to put God back into the center of His world and relate
everything in our life and in the lives of others to Him and not to us.
• What’s the number one thing?
It does not make any difference how things affect us but the important thing is,
what do they do to God?
What is His relationship to these things?
23. Let’s illustrate it with this true story.

25. The Thorn
By Martha Snell Nicholson
I stood a mendicant (MEN-di-kuh-nt) of God before His royal throne
And begged Him for one priceless gift, which I could call my own.
I took the gift from out His hand, but as I would depart
I cried, “But Lord this is a thorn and it has pierced my heart.
This is a strange, a hurtful gift, which Thou hast given me.”
He said, “My child, I give good gifts and gave My best to thee.”
I took it home and though at first the cruel thorn hurt sore,
As long years passed I learned at last to love it more and more.
I learned He never gives a thorn without this added grace,
He takes the thorn to pin aside the veil which hides His face.
The Thorn
By Martha Snell Nicholson
2 Corinthians 12:7-10 NKJV
The Thorn in the Flesh
7 And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the
revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet
me, lest I be exalted above measure. 8 Concerning this thing I pleaded with
(begged) the Lord three times that it might depart from me. 9 And He said to me,
“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”
Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ
may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in
needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I
am strong.
2 Corinthians 12:7-10 NKJV
This is what the Scripture means when it says that all of life must be built around
the Person of the Lord Jesus in order to make sense.
Allow Him to write the next chapter of your life. (See Ephesians 2:10)
Ephesians 2:10 NKJV
10 For we are His workmanship (poiēma – POYemmah - poem), created in Christ
Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in
them.
A day is coming when:
Philippians 2:10-11 NKJV
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in Heaven, and of
those on Earth, and of those under the Earth, 11 and that every tongue should
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
26. Then the destruction, desolation, and heartache of the Garden of Eden will be
reversed, and men shall once again acknowledge the centrality of God in life.
Then the world shall be filled with glory and righteousness from the river to the
ends of the earth.
Everything shall be what God intended it to be.
But the glory of the Gospel is that this can happen in human hearts right now and
this is what the Gospel message is all about.
Have you ceased your rebellion against the will of God?
Have you stopped trying to be a little god, trying to run
things in your own home or office the way you want them to
be?
https://brianhfontaine.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/to-be-god.jpg
Have you crowned Jesus Christ Lord of His empire, where He belongs, and
invited Him with gladness to sit upon the throne of your heart and rule there?
Have you stopped your grumbling and complaining about all the things that
come into your life, that are His choice for you, and begun to rejoice as the
Scriptures exhort us, "giving thanks in all things, for this is the will of God in Christ
Jesus concerning you" (1 Thessalonians 5:18)?
Prayer:
How we need, our Father, this exhortation to remind us of the one great theme of
life -- that life cannot, will not ever make sense, will not cease its endless friction,
until it be related to the Person of Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant that every heart
here, young and old alike, boy and girl, man and woman, may each in his own
way, crown him anew Lord of Lords, King of Kings, and mean it -- to live each
day in that holy relationship. We ask in His name, Amen.
