• Pitch refers to the highness or
lowness of a sound.
• The pitch of a sound that you
hear depends on the
frequency of the sound wave.
 Sound waves with a high frequency have a
high pitch and sound waves with a low
frequency have a low pitch.
 Loudness or intensity describes your
perception of the energy of sound.
 Intensity refers to the energy delivered to a
unit area of a surface per unit of time
 The SI unit of intensity is watt/m^2
Loudness of a sound depends on several
factors. These include:
 Amount of energy of a sound.
 Distance from the source of sound.
 The state of the medium through which the
sound is transmitted.
 Area to which the sound is produced
 The greater the energy used to make a
sound, the louder the sound
Example: Playing a guitar
When you use more energy to pull the
strings of the guitar the louder the noise
produced by the guitar is.
 The more energy you use,
the larger the amplitude
 The larger the amplitude
produces a louder sound.
is the distance
between the normal position to
the final position of an object
which is producing specific
vibration.
 Loudness increases the closer you are to a
sound source.
– Close to the sound source, the sound waves
cover a small area
– As waves travel away from the sound source,
it covers more area
 The total energy of the wave stays the same
whether it’s close to the source or far away
from it
 The loudness of sound also depends upon
the area of the vibrating body. For example,
1. the sound produced by a large drum is
louder than that produced by a small drum.
2. If we strike a tuning fork on a rubber pad, a
feeble sound would be heard. But if the
vibrating tuning fork is placed vertically on
the surface of a bench, we will hear a louder
sound.
 The characteristic of sound by which we can
distinguish between two sounds of same
loudness and pitch is called quality.
For example, the sound quality or timbre
makes the different instrument in an
orchestra sound different even when they are
playing the same note.
 The amount of energy a sound wave carries
per second through a unit area is its
Intensity.
 Intensity is a physical quantity and can be
measured accurately.
 Its unit is watt per meter square.
1) How is sound made and what are the four
characteristics of sound?
2) What does the pitch of the sound depend
upon and how are they related ?
3) What does loudness of a sound depend
upon ?
4) Do the sound waveforms produced by a
tuning fork, a flute, and a clarinet have the
same frequency?
5) What is the SI unit of intensity? How is
intensity of sound measured ?
