Letter of Recommendation: Samantha Mizusawa
Dear Sir/Madam:
This letter of recommendation is provided at the request of Samantha Mizusawa, who asked me to
serve as a reference on her behalf. Samantha was retained as an Environmental Representative (Intern)
for Unitil Service Corp. (Unitil) from July 2015 to May 2016. I served as her direct report during her
internship at Unitil.
Initially, Samantha’s responsibilities were focused on auditing environmental compliance at Unitil’s
operations centers. However, an aggressive remediation schedule necessitated her responsibilities be
expanded to include field oversight at three, former manufactured gas plants. Additionally, Samantha
was requested to coordinate spring permitting to ensure a seamless start of the summer maintenance
schedule. These additional responsibilities were assigned after Samantha’s arrival, and her ability to
accept them without hesitation reflects a flexibility that is invaluable in today’s quickly evolving,
business environment.
More importantly, though, Samantha consistently completed her assigned tasks within the established
deadlines. Throughout her work, Samantha displayed an intelligence and intuition, which highlighted
her abilities as a self‐starter. Also, her attention to detail ensured a final work product which was as
concise as it was professional.
While at Unitil, Samantha completed the following, more notable tasks:
Audited bi‐weekly, environmental compliance at five operations centers located in three states
(MA, ME, and NH) and created a compliance metric tracking system;
Provided field oversight during remediation projects at three, former manufactured gas plants in
two states (ME – Lewiston and Portland and NH – Exeter);
Initiated a Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program permit to the applicable state
regulator and briefed the local conservation commission for vegetation management in MA; and
Assisted in the preparation of more than 15 environmental permits for vegetation management
control along electric rights‐of‐way in NH.
Samantha’s ability to complete assigned tasks on a wide‐variety of topics – within the stated deadlines –
was most notable. As a result, several additional targets, beyond what was initially anticipated, were
achieved during her internship. As a result, Samantha’s actions reflect great credit upon herself, her
family, and her schooling at Occidental College.
