Anna Baker, Senior Artistic Stylist’s tips for easy “Haute Hat Hair”
Classic elegant hats and fascinators:
To best flatter classic millinery shapes, look more towards a polished and voluminous blow
dry. The essence of this look is to complement and enhance the silhouette of such traditional
shape and to go for a bouncy blow dry with oodles of body that supports the width of wide
brimmed hats, or glossy groomed lengths that balance the height with fascinators.
Avant-garde hats and fascinators:
The more creative and elaborate the style of your hat, the greater the opportunity is to do it
justice by pairing it together with beautifully dressed updos. They not only compliment the
flamboyance, but also enhance the drama and architectural statement that this type of hat
commands.
Seamless no “hat hair” race day to night transition – 5 easy tips:
1. Product preparation is vital for hair that will last, so working through a heat styling balm to
eliminate any potential frizz, and layering with a firm hold mousse before drying delivers strength
and volume.
2. Even for those who wear their hair sleek and straight, hats can flatten even further at the
roots. Blow dry with a large bristle brush and set using extra-large Velcro rollers. This will
guarantee root lift without creating a wave through the lengths.
3. Backcombing is back! The easiest way to give a little structure to the softest of hair, is to take
a fine toothed comb and begin from the hairline, continuing all around to the crown. Take 2
inch width sections and hold up and away from the scalp, place the comb two inches back
from the roots and slowly but firmly comb back 2-3 times creating a puffed and full backcomb
at the roots. Spritz a little hairspray over each section as you go then smooth the hair surface
lightly using a flat bristle brush.
4. Hairspray etiquette - when using finishing spray blast up and into your hair rather than the
classic 'halo' of spray which will sit on the top of the hair and weigh it down. Full blow dries or
updos need gravity defying support so this technique acts as scaffolding to aid hold
3. 5. When removing your hat, above all take your time. Your hair stylist can explain how the hat
fits into the direction the hair has been styled, so follow the tips as you remove it to not disturb
your overall look. Remove any grips around Alice band bases before pulling it away, or place
fingers behind combs as you remove to not drag the hair with it. Always keep a miniature
hairspray in your handbag with a small comb to tidy strands after.
