Several students use social media for various purposes.
Considering the various using purpose of social media, the
first and primary problem of this study arises. The main
question of this study is what is the cause of social media
use at University level student?
Social media users engage with social media platform in
several times in a day. Especially university student engage
with social media in many times.
Considering the students’ engagement in social media in
several times the second problem arises. The second
problem is that what is the effect of social media
engagement on academic performance?

8. LITERATURE REVIEW
Alfaris, et al. (2018) conducted a research about “The pattern of social
media use and its association with academic performance among
medical students”. According to their finding 97% students responded
their research, among them 98% used Social Media. They show that
the most popular social media were WhatsApp (87.8%), YouTube
(60.8%) and Twitter (51.8%). Student use these for general use; they
also mention that 83.5% students used YouTube, 35.5% WhatsApp
and 35.3% used Twitter for learning. A significant higher number of
male students visit YouTube and Facebook for general use, while the
reverse was true for Instagram and Path. Their finding showed that
almost 71% visited social media more than 4 times in a day among
them 55% spent 1 to 4 hours per day. Mainly they use social media for
entertainment (95.8%), staying up-to-date with news (88.3%), and
socializing (85.5%); for academic studies (40%). They comment that
there was no significant association between Grade Point Average
and the frequency of daily SM use or use during lectures.

Alabi (2013) searched to find out the level of
Facebook Addiction among a selection of Nigerian
University Undergraduates. The study surveyed the
level of addiction to Facebook among selected
undergraduate students of these universities.
Stratified and purposive sampling techniques were
used in selecting 1000 undergraduate students from
four universities in South-western Nigeria - two
private institutions and the other two; public. Data
was collected using the Facebook Addiction
Symptoms Scale (FASS) in the form of a
questionnaire. His finding showed that a low level of
addiction particularly among university
undergraduates in private universities mainly due to
internet access in those institutions.

Research design
Descriptive research is one kind of research
includes surveys and fact – finding inquires of
different kinds. In this study descriptive
research design will be used.

This research will be done by collecting data
at Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur.

a more scientific result that could be used to represent the

The population is huge. It is not possible to
work with a large sampling size due to shortage
of time. So researcher will purposively select
180 users under six faculties six departments
(Mass Communication and Journalism, English,
Chemistry, Marketing, Geography and
Environment and Electrical and Electronics
Engineering) of Begum Rokeya University,
Rangpur.

This study will be used both primary and secondary
data. A survey will be conducted on social media user
at Begum Rokeya University’s six faculties’ six
departments 60 users by structured questionnaire for
collecting primary data.
Data analysis and presentation
For this purpose Microsoft word 2007, Microsoft
excels 2007 and SPSS software was used to
analyze the data for further analysis. To present the
data graph, table and chart will be used.

Bangladesh especially at Begum Rokeya
University, Rangpur. So that I want to does
this research to investigate the cause,
engagement and addiction among university
student.
