What is nutrition
 Nutrition is the process of consumption of food, its
digestion and complete absorption by the body. Nutrition
is essential for an organism as it provides energy to
perform several activities. Moreover, it provides immunity
to fight against several diseases and infection and help in
performing basic daily activities.
 Macronutrients are nutrients that people need in
relatively large quantities.
 Proteins, carbohydrates, fat vitamins, minerals, fiber and
water are all nutrients.
Why is nutrition important
 Most people know good nutrition and physical activity can help
maintain a healthy weight. But the benefits of good nutrition go
beyond weight. Good nutrition can help:
a) Reduce the risk of some diseases, including heart disease, diabetes,
stroke, some cancers, and osteoporosis,
b) Reduce high blood pressure,
c) Lower high cholesterol,
d) Improve your well-being,
e) Improve your ability to recover from illness or injury,
f) Increase your energy level.
What is poor nutrition
 A poor diet is probably a diet where you eat too much calories
composed of all junk food and lack essentials nutrients.
 Lack of nutrition occurs when the body doesn’t absorb or get food
from the necessary amount of a nutrient.
 Deficiencies can lead to a variety of health problems which include
digestion problems, skin disorders, and defective bone growth, and
even dementia.
 Symptoms are fatigue, dizziness and weight loss. Malnutrition can also
cause physical or mental disability.
Steps to Good Nutrition
 Steps to Good Nutrition - It’s Easier Than You Think.
A good place to start is to:
 have a good variety of healthy foods.
 aim for two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables each day
 only occasionally eat sugary, fatty or salty food, and then only in small
amounts
 drink fresh, clean tap water instead of sugary drinks
 switch over to healthy recipes that look and taste good
 plan your meals ahead and shop for healthy ingredients
 enjoy cooking and eating healthy food with family or friends and without
distractions such as the television.
