SVT and our partners at Harvard Conservation Trust, Town of Harvard, Littleton Conservation Trust, Town of Littleton, and Boxborough Conservation Trust held a BioBlitz at conservation lands in the three towns. These are just some of the species we observed.

About the BioBlitz
On June 22, 2019, SVT, Harvard Conservation Trust
(HCT), Littleton Conservation Trust (LCT), Boxborough
Conservation Trust (BCTrust), and the Towns of
Littleton and Harvard held a BioBlitz in the area around
Littleton, Harvard, and Boxborough, Massachusetts.
Other representatives of the three towns as well as 30
volunteers also participated in the BioBlitz. Together, we
scoured local conservation lands and cataloged the
wildlife we encountered in this area that we call the
“High Ridge.”
Prior to the BioBlitz, we held three “Discovery Days” in
May and June. On these outings, our amazing volunteer
experts helped us teach amateur naturalists the skills
they would need to participate in the BioBlitz.
About This Slide Show
This slide show includes just a few images from the more
than 1,000 observations amounting to 425 species we
encountered in the area from May 4 through June 22.
Each slide provides the name of the species, followed by
the person (or family) who reported the encounter and
took the photo. Some also list the property or town
where the encounter occurred.
In cases where we were unable to capture an image of the
species when we observed it, we have provided a stock
image with a photo credit.
Some of the images also included a label in the lower
right corner that indicates whether the species is rare to
the northeast, a species of conservation concern, an
invasive, or one of our most abundant species.
The species that are labeled “species of concern” are
either listed federally or under state legislation such as
the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act (MESA) and
the State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP).
“Invasive species” are those identified by the USDA and
Invasive Plant Atlas of New England (IPANE) as invasive
or as potentially invasive.
Species labeled as “rare” or “most abundant” were
observations made by SVT and iNaturalist citizen
scientists.
