Presented by
SUBBURAJ.M
Deputy Director
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India
2. INDIA HEALTH CHALLEGES
• UNDER-NUTRITION-Global hunger
Index, 2019 : India is #102 out of 119
countries
• MICRONUTRIENT
MALNUTRITION- Over 70% of the
Indian population still consumes less
than 50% of the RDA for
micronutrients.
• OVER- NUTRITION & OBESITY-
30 million Indians are obese, India have
15% of obese people in the world.
3. PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERN
Iron Deficiency Anaemia
Vitamin A Deficiency
Iodine Deficiency
Disorder
Vitamin D Deficiency
58.4%
Of children(6-59
months)
are anaemic
53.1%
Women in the
reproductive
age group are
anaemic
35.7% children
under 5years are
underweight
22.7% Men
are anaemic
According to National Family Health
Survey(NFHS)-4
4. WHY FOCUS ON MALNUTRITION?
Hunger and Malnutrition stunt
growth- intellectually and
physically , leading to
• Premature death
• Disability, life long susceptibility to
illness
• Poor cognitive and learning skills
• Low achievement in school
• Low productivity and low wages
and hence, poverty
Malnutrition starts early….Right
from the Womb
Malnutrition Affects
•Health and Survival
•Educability
•Economic Productivity
•Disability
Stagnating child and
maternal malnutrition
rates, including
micronutrient malnutrition
are at very high levels and
their impact is devastating
5. Micronutrient Malnutrition- 3 options to Control
Supplementation
Dietary Diversification
Fortification
Of these options, fortification is most efficient on account of comparatively lower
cost to implement & ability to yield significant result in short period of time
6. FOOD FORTIFICATION: BENEFITS OUTWEIGHT COST
Food fortification : Addition of one or more essential nutrients to food
for the purpose of preventing or correcting a demonstrated deficiency of
one or more nutrients at the population level/specific groups.
Copenhagen Consensus
US $347 million
investment in vitamins
and minerals
US $5 billion in
savings from avoided
deaths, improved
earning and reduced
healthcare spending
Probably no other technology available today offer as large an opportunity to
improve lives & accelerate development at such low cost in such a short time.
