In Spring 2013, we are on the precipice of dramatic, disruptive change in the health field that offers an unprecedented opportunity and challenge to transform health care and population health. We know that traditional public health approaches along with more and better health care are not enough to improve health outcomes, equity, and cost. We must also: - implement sustainable, fundamental "upstream" changes that address the root causes of disease and disability; and - transform the way we deliver health care to ensure access to quality, affordable health care for all. PLAN VAN
The Plan Van was designed as a “rolling workshop” to signifi-
cantly broaden interest and participation in the General Plan
program. The overall goal of the Plan Van was to take the
General Plan program to Richmond’s citizens and neighbor-
hoods, either alongside special events like the Pt. Richmond
Stroll, or on weekend afternoons in prominent public locations.
The General Plan Team borrowed a City of Richmond van and
wrapped it in a colorful graphic advertising the General Plan
program.
The van was outfitted with maps, signs, promotional items,
books, and other materials intended to inform the public about
the General Plan program as well as solicit community opin-
ions on Richmond’s assets, issues, and opportunities. The van
was staffed by a combination of consultant team members,
including people hired from the Richmond community, and
City staff.
In the first phase of the project, the Plan Van conducted 24
stops; a list of stops is shown in the Appendix.
At each stop, participants were asked to participate in a map
exercise, identifying locations where specific changes are
desired. Participants were also asked to complete comment
cards identifying Richmond’s assets and major issues. Nearly
The Plan Van debuted at the 2006 Cinco de Mayo celebrations and continued to visit
Richmond neighborhoods throughout the summer.
