SDG 15: ”By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of
all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded…”
NY Declaration on Forests: “At least halve the rate of loss of natural forests
globally by 2020 and strive to end natural forest loss by 2030.”
“…eliminating deforestation from the production of agricultural commodities
such as palm oil, soy, paper and beef products by no later than 2020…”

4. The deforestation footprint of EU / Swedish consumption
EU deforestation footprint: ~340 kha/yr
1/6 of the total carbon footprint of an average
EU diet is due to deforestation emissions!

Notas do Editor
Note that tropical deforestation has long been on the international environmental agenda, but in the last years it has seen increased attention, not the least through a greater involvement of private sector actors. This is also reflected in VERY ambitious international targets to reduce and halt deforestation…
Note that trends are currently going in the wrong direction, making stronger action urgent, if we are to get anywhere near reaching the targets we have jointly set up!
Why should Swdish actors care? Well, not only because we will suffer from the env impacts of deforestation, but because we are part of the problem… Introduce our studies, linking deforestation data from remote sensing, agricultural statistics and global trade models to assess the drivers of deforestation. One key conclusion is that, while most of the deforestation is driven by production for domestic demand, EU is a key recipient of deforestation embodied in international trade. Our imports cause deforestation emissions of around 150 MtCO2/yr, which means that a sixth of the carbon footprint of an average EU diet is due to deforestation… Present Swedish numbers…
Note that the EU has just finished a public consultation on how to step up action on deforestation and will in the coming months come back with concrete responses… And there are plenty of actions that can be taken, by different actors…
DEMAND-SIDE: Trade policies can include both negative (i.e., restrictions on trade) and positive (e.g., lower import duties for certified products)…
End with a call to arms: not just enough to just clean our hands, we have a responsibility to act to actually help solve the problem… We hope that todays discussion will contribute to that goal!
