Periadventitial fat surrounding arteries may play an important role in plaque inflammation. Researchers introduced macrophage-like activity in the periadventitial fat of aortas in Apo E deficient mice. This suggests that adipocytes in periadventitial fat surrounding arteries can exhibit macrophage-like behavior that may contribute to plaque inflammation.
