4. INTRODUCTION
Jack Ma Yun (born on 10 September 1964) is a Chinese business
magnate, investor and philanthropist.
A former English teacher, Jack Ma cofounded Alibaba Group, now one of
the world's largest e-commerce businesses, in 1999.
In addition, he co-founded Yun Feng Capital, a Chinese private equity
firm.
Ma became interested in the English language as a young boy, and during
his teens he worked as a guide for foreign tourists to Hangzhou.
Ma failed the entrance exam for the Hangzhou Teachers College twice.
(His weak point was mathematics.)
He was admitted on the third try, in 1984, and he graduated with
a bachelor’s degree in English in 1988.
In 1994 he founded his first company, the Haibo Translation Agency,
which provided English translation and interpretation.
6. Business Career.
Alibaba Group, which comprised several of China’s most popular Web sites, including the
business-to-business marketplace Alibaba.com and the shopping site Taobao.com
On a trip to the United States, Ma had his first encounter with the Internet and saw the lack of
Chinese Web sites as a great business opportunity.
On his return, he founded China Pages, which created Web sites for Chinese businesses and was
one of China’s first Internet companies.
He said that "The day we got connected to the Web, I invited friends and TV people over to my
house", and on a very slow dial-up connection, "we waited three and a half hours and got half a
page", he recalled. "We drank, watched TV and played cards, waiting. But I was so proud. I proved
the Internet existed".
8. ALIBABA.
Alibaba is China’s — and by some measures, the world’s — biggest online commerce
company.
It’s three main sites are — Taobao, Tmall and Alibaba.com — have hundreds of millions
of users, and host millions of merchants and businesses. Alibaba handles more business
than any other e-commerce company.
Alibaba is the most popular destination for online shopping, in the world's fastest growing
e-commerce market. Transactions on its online sites totaled $248 billion last year, more
than those of eBay and Amazon.com combined.
10. Philanthropy.
Philanthropy: The desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the
generous donation of money to good causes.
• Jack Ma is the founder of the Jack Ma Foundation, a philanthropic organization focused
on improving education, the environment and public health.
• In 2008, Alibaba donated $808,000 to victims of the Sichuan earthquake.
• In 2009 Jack Ma became a trustee of The Nature Conservancy's China program, and in
2010 he joined the global Board of Directors of the organization.
• In 2015, the company funded the rebuilding of 1,000 houses damaged by the earthquake-
hit in Nepal, and raised money for another.
