e.g. the policy at tEC: if staff are stepping away from their desks for lunch or to make a cup of tea, they turn off the monitor (savings fact). If staff are not using the computer for more than ½ an hour, the computers are powered down. tEC has zoned lighting front office, back office and the meeting room. This is an effective way of helping staff to select only those lights they need. Leaving your office lighting on overnight waste enough energy to make 1000 cups of tea
the Carbon Trust recommends switching off lights, including tubular fluorescent lamps, when leaving a room. Contrary to common belief that leaving fluorescent lights on saves energy, this type of lamp only uses a few seconds’ worth of power when it is turned on. (Compared to 35-40% for standard T8 tubes).
For example, you can save energy by setting the heating to go off half an hour before the end of the day. your office is warm turn the radiator down do not open the window Did you know that if you turn the TVR up on your radiator when you’re cold, it does not make it warmer, it will overheat the room *Don’t block radiators with furniture *Fit reflective panels behind radiators *Install pipe lagging to reduce heat loss *Get your boiler serviced annually to ensure it is running as efficiently as possible Make sure you are comfortable though, the recommended room temperature is 18 - 21°C. For example, you can save energy by turning down the heat in unoccupied rooms.

New business- increasing demand for a green supply chain, sustainable procurement policies.
the Environment Centre (tEC) has a wealth of experience in working with local businesses to undertake energy and environmental audits which can help improve your green credentials and save money on your fuel bills. Energy audits focus on energy efficiency, whilst environmental audits consider waste and water efficiency. Whether you are interested in creating your own Environment policy, want to make your supply chain more sustainable or need assistance in achieving ISO14001 or other accreditation, we have experts on hand to help. We have a detailed understanding of businesses responsibilities as far as sustainability is concerned and in this light have been commissioned to produce several Sustainability strategies. These reports take into account sustainability work already undertaken by the company, events and training which have taken place in the past, along with any existing action plans or written policies. We will carry out the necessary research for and produce a detailed Sustainability report with a targeted action plan and list of recommendations/advice. tEC can help you develop a Green Travel Plan. A member of tEC will visit the workplace and analyse current travel data, including the current vehicles used by the company for business and any relevant ‘grey fleet’ (all vehicles used by members of staff for commuting). This data can then be used as a baseline to produce a green travel plan including a targeted action plan, tips on saving carbon, how to encourage car sharing and the use of public transport etc. tEC can run several sustainability training sessions for staff. We can offer one day ‘Energy Efficiency in the Workplace’ courses, which are designed to get members of staff thinking about saving energy and reducing carbon in everyday situations at work. We can organise an in house Sustainability road show to give out free advice to your members of staff on issues such as energy efficiency; water conservation; waste and recycling; fuel poverty and renewable technologies. We will bring a stall with advice leaflets and low energy light bulbs to give away and can provide interactive exhibits such as an exercise bike generator.
