The Hampton Bays Union Free School received its charter in 1908. The new Middle School, located on Ponquogue Avenue, opened in April 2008 in celebration of the district’s Centennial. The Shinnecock (Ponquogue Point) Lighthouse located in Hampton Bays was built in 1858 and later demolished by the Coast Guard in 1948, but its iconography has informed the new building’s architectural identity. bbs H A M P T O N B A Y S M I D D L E S C H O O L

The Hampton Bays Middle School has been designed and constructed to be a high performing sustainable building that has received LEED Silver Certification. It is responsive to the architectural identity of its community at large. It is also a fully functional (5-8) middle school embracing team teaching and cooperative learning. DESIGN DEVELOPMENT & CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS BBS green

The performance of the exterior building envelope sets the standard for the performance of the entire project. Proper architectural detailing and design leads to the development of more efficient HVAC systems. Perimeter radiation heating was effectively removed from the project due to an improved exterior building envelope. More efficient HVAC systems consume less energy. Conventional construction detailing can lead to the development of an exterior building envelope that does not perform as well as it could. Gaps in insulation, air and moisture infiltration, and thermal bridging are key issues. By rethinking the way we detail a building during the development of construction documents we can achieve a high performance exterior building envelope with minimal budget impact. Hampton Bays Middle School 3” thick insulation within the wall cavity is continuous from the top to the bottom. R-36 roof insulation has been used, (R-30 is the more typical standard requirement) bbs

Hampton Bays Middle School Moisture is less likely to accumulate within a wall cavity when flashing is strategically located and proper ventilation of the wall cavity is provided. Preventing moisture infiltration is key in the prevention of mold growth and contributes to high levels of indoor air quality (IAQ). bbs

Hampton Bays Middle School Combining all of these details creates a building envelope that will perform at a higher level than a more conventionally detailed building. bbs

The Hampton Bays Middle School performs at a higher level than a “baseline building” as defined by (ASHRAE 90.1-1999) and N.Y.S. Code standards. Performance criteria are based upon the comparison of U-values of wall and roof assemblies. bbs H A M P T O N B A Y S M I D D L E S C H O O L

The product selection process has been focused upon using regional materials that preferably have some percentage of recycled content. Special attention has been given to the effects of product selection to indoor air quality. Key IAQ performance criteria include low gas emissions as well as chemical and pollutant source control. CONSTRUCTION OCCUPANCY LEED ‘SILVER’ BBS green

It was a part of our responsibility to monitor the construction phase of the Hampton Bays Middle School to be sure that goals set during the planning phases would be realized in actual construction. Construction Waste Management diverted 75% of waste material from landfills, sending it instead to recycling centers for re-use and/or re-manufacture.
