Emotion regulation refers to shaping which emotions one has,
when one has them, and how one experiences or expresses
these emotions (Gross, 1998, 2013, 2015 ※1).
※1
個人的には Gross, Uusberg & Uusberg (2019) の ”Affect regulation involves intentional (but not necessarily
conscious) attempts to change the intensity, duration, frequency or type of current or anticipated affect

Coping may be distinguished by its predominant emphasis on alleviating stress responses and its relatively
long temporal horizon (e.g., coping with bereavement over months). Emotion regulation overlaps with
coping but refers to attempts to influence which emotions one has, when one has them, and how one
experiences or expresses these emotions (Gross, 1998).
Coping is distinguished from emotion regulation by its primary focus on decreasing negative emotion
experience and by its use of the protracted organism situation interaction — or emotion episode—as the
preferred unit of analysis.
14. Process Model 1
◆ Process model of emotion regulation (Gross, 1998, 2013)
Modal model of emotion (Gross, 2013, 2015)
- e.g.,
→ Situation:
→ Attention:
Situation Attention Appraisal Response
15. Process Model 2
◆ Process model of emotion regulation (Gross, 1998, 2013)

Process Model 3
◆ Situation selection (状況選択: Gross, 2013)
This type of emotion regulation involves taking actions that make it more (or less) likely that one
will end up in a situation that one expects will give rise to desirable (or undesirable) emotions.
◆ Situation Modification (状況修正: Gross, 2013)
Situation modification refers to directly modifying a situation so as to alter its emotional impact.

Process Model 4
◆ Attention deployment (注意配分: Gross, 2013)
Attentional deployment refers to directing attention within a given situation in order to influence
one’s emotions.
(Aldao et al., 2010)
18. Process Model 5
◆ Attention deployment (注意配分: Gross, 2013)
Distraction, which focuses attention on other aspects of the situation or moves attention away
from the situation altogether
(Webb et al., 2012)
19. Process Model 6
◆ Cognitive change (認知変容: Gross, 2013)
Cognitive change refers to modifying how one appraises a situation so as to alter its emotional
significance, either by changing how one thinks about the situation or about one’s capacity to
manage the demands it poses.
Reappraisal is a commonly used form of emotion regulation that centers on people’s attempts to
reframe how they are thinking about an emotional situation so that they feel better (Ford & Troy, 2019).
(Aldao et al., 2010; Webb et al., 2012)
20. 20
Process Model 7
◆ Response modulation (反応調整: Gross, 2013)
Response modulation, occurs late in the emotion-generative process, after response tendencies
have already been initiated, and refers to directly influencing experiential, behavioral, or
physiological components of the emotional response.
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
21. 21
Process Model 8
◆ Response modulation (反応調整: Gross, 2013)
Expressive suppression (表出抑制)
Expressive suppression, in which a person tries to inhibit ongoing negative or positive emotion-
expressive behavior.
(Webb et al., 2012)
(Aldao et al., 2010)
22. Extended Process Model
◆ Extended process model of emotion regulation (Gross, 2015)
- World → Perception → Valuation → Action
(Sheppes, Suri, & Gross, 2015;
- Emotion malleability beliefs (感情の可変性の信念: 日本語訳は榊原, 2019に基づく)
- Implicit theory of emotion (感情の暗黙理論 or 暗黙の感情観 … ?)
◆ Emotion malleability beliefs (感情の可変性の信念) ※1
(Tamir et al., 2007): “If they want to, people can change the emotions that they have,”
No matter how hard they try, people can’t really change the emotions that they have,”
(De Castella et al. 2015)
