Having enrolled in the Geology Course at the University of Lisbon, where his final graduation Seminar was dedicated to the causes of colour in tourmaline, Rui Galopim de Carvalho got his FGA and DGA diplomas in Gem-A London in Gemmology and Diamond Grading. In Portugal he has developed extensive gem testing work in close collaboration with several public and private museums, as well as with the Church, in diverse inventory projects throughout the country, being very much involved on the research on the history of the use of gems, specially in Portuguese jewellery of the 18th and 19th centuries.
