Rotary International's 2015 convention panel discussed the value of Rotary exchange programs in promoting global understanding. The panelists described several Rotary exchange opportunities, including Rotary Youth Exchange, Rotary Friendship Exchange, New Generations Service Exchange, and Vocational Training Teams. These programs aim to develop cultural competence, expand awareness and empathy, and promote goodwill and peace by serving as cultural ambassadors. Exchange programs provide opportunities for immersion in another culture and country to foster international relationships and understanding between participants.

Notas do Editor
Terry: Good afternoon everyone and thank you for joining us today for our session on the Value of Rotary Exchange Programs in a Globalized and Unsettled World.
Terry
My name is Terry McIntyre and I will be moderating today’s session. A little about me: I am a member of District 4600 located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. My wife Maria José and I have been Rotarians since 1998. I have served as the districts Rotary Friendship Exchange Chair for a number of years and will serve as the District’s International Service Chair over the coming Rotary year. I am originally from the USA and hold a PhD in International Studies. I am a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a retired U.S. diplomat. I currently work as a university professor and as the Deputy Executive Director of the Brazilian Fulbright Commission.
I am very pleased to introduce our panel of presenters who are all very passionate and experienced with a variety of different exchange programs offered by Rotary.
Past District Governor Edward Thompson joins us from District 5550, Canada, where he currently serves as the District Rotary Friendship Exchange Chair. Ed was raised in rural Manitoba and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. Ed works in the agriculture industry. He has been a Rotarian since 1992, holding various club, district, and zone level positions throughout the year. Ed and his wife Elaine, also a Rotarian, have two daughters and three grandchildren. They have hosted 11 Rotary Youth Exchange students over the years and participated in Group Study Exchanges and the Rotary Friendship Exchange program. Welcome Ed!
Past District Governor Friedrich Neddermeier joins us from District 1850, Germany, where he is actively involved with youth programs and membership initiatives. Friedrich has served as a training leader for the International Assembly and as an RI Representative at numerous district conferences. He is passionate about helping our youth learn about other cultures and themselves and has been actively involved with Rotary Youth Exchange programs. In a former life, Friedrich served as a unit commander in the German Air Force. He studied politics and social sciences and has lived in the USA and the Netherlands. Friedrich and his wife Marlis have been married more than 50 years and have two daughters and five grandchildren. Today he will be sharing about New Generations Service Exchange opportunities for our young professional leaders in Rotary. Welcome Friedrich!
Our third panelist, District Governor-elect Viveca Serder joins us from District 2390, Sweden, and has a wealth of experience with vocational-oriented programs. Viveca currently chairs the district’s Vocational Training Team committee and … [INSERT BIO ONCE AVAILABLE]

Through Rotary, we have a variety of opportunities to broaden our horizons, immerse ourselves into different cultures, and become better global citizens. A few of these programs include Rotary Youth Exchange for our youth and international service/international volunteering initiatives. Today our panelists will share about three programs you can leverage to make life-long friends around the world while building greater global awareness: Rotary Friendship Exchanges, New Generations Service Exchanges, Vocational Training Teams.
Terry:
It is my pleasure to pass along the microphone to our first presenter, Ed Thompson, who will share about the Rotary Friendship Exchange program.

Thank you Ed, Friedrich, and Viveca for your presentations. We’ll now take about 15 minutes asking our panel to answer your questions.
[Terry calls on participants to ask questions and directs questions to panelists].
Terry
Thank you for all of the excellent question and thank you again to our three panelists for joining us today. Unfortunately we are out of time for questions but if you like to ask Rotary staff more detailed questions or find additional tools, be sure to visit the Rotary booth and the many other resources in the House of Friendship. As a reminder, each year, District Governors have the option to appoint district-level leaders to coordinate each of these three programs. If you would like to get involved, contact your district leadership to get involved.
We hope you will be joining us in our Rotary exchange program activities soon!
To help us continue to improve our convention breakout sessions, please remember to evaluate this session using your mobile application.
Thank you and enjoy the rest of your afternoon and your time at the convention.
