2. What is Project
D.U.T.A?
• Project DUTA taught me the
importance of preserving the
environment through recycling
organic waste.
• Composting is easy to do, and
provides a very good fertilizer for
our garden at home. It
reduces the amount of garbage
you send to the landfill therefore
it helps lessen the
pollution. Also, composting
provides financial benefits by
selling it to other people.
12. I. Select and Prepare
Plastic Bins
Make sure there is air
circulating around your
compost to help it decompose
faster. Drill holes throughout
the containers on all
sides. Also, drill holes in the
bottom so when you water the
compost it will not soak the
mixture and ruin it.
13. II. Chop/cut the raw materials
into smaller pieces.
We have the chop down raw
materials into to smaller pieces so
it will decompose faster. The
faster it decomposes the earlier
you can use it.
14.
15. III. Fill the Bin
Anything you would throw in a normal
compost bin can go in your storage
container composter. Leaves, fruit and
vegetable peels, shredded paper,
twigs dried leaves and grass clippings
all work well in a compost. When
filling in layers make sure that the
browns are more than the greens. Do
not add any type of meats because it
will cause a bad odor on
your compost.

18. IV. Maintain the Bin
I water the compost twice a week and mix
it once a week. I do it every Tuesday and
Thursday and then Saturday respectively.
Doing so will maintain moisture in the
compost and mixing it regularly will ensure
equal distribution of all raw materials. This
will also help hasten the process of
decomposition. Make sure to cover the
container to avoid rain from soaking the
compost with water.
23. V. Harvest and Use the Compost
The compost should be ready for use
after three months. The fastest way to harvest
the finished compost from your bin is to run it
all through a simple compost sifter. They also
have what you call compost tea where you mix
a handful of compost to a liter of water and
use it in watering the plants.
This can also be a good source of extra income
for the family if you are able to produce it in
bulk.
