BEACh sAFArI – MAFIA IsLANd
Mafia Island Marine Park was opened in July 1995 and is situated about 130 km south of Dar es-Salaam and about 25
km from the mainland. The Mafia archipelago is formed of a number of very large islands and small uninhabited coral
atolls. The island is the meeting place of large oceanic fish and the vast variety of fish common to the Indian Ocean
coral reefs. The Park is a paradise for both expert scuba divers as well as those wishing to snorkel or sail in the native
local boats from island to island. Mafia is also a refuge for whale sharks and there are excursions to snorkel with these
gentle giants of the ocean - highly recommended.

Annular Eclipse Safari
29 August - 2 September 2016
On the 1st of September 2016, there can be few better places to be viewing the annular solar eclipse, than
in Katavi National Park, Tanzania. Katavi National Park is located in the western area of Tanzania, it is one of
the most untouched areas of the entire country. The park is Africa at its most wild: unadulterated bush settings,
spectacular views, and rich wildlife. An annular solar eclipse happens when the Moon covers the Sun’s
centre, leaving the Sun’s visible outer edges to form a “ring of fire” or annulus around the Moon.
Our tour gives you the most incredible wilderness safari with a wide range of optional tours to select from
– including trekking to view chimpanzees, the Serengeti migration and Ngorongoro Crater, and dreamy
Zanzibar. So much to choose from!
We have a superb team of eclipse experts leading the tour along with the best safari and photographic guides.
Don`t miss it!
2. OPTIONAL add on tours…….
Ruaha National Park
Tanzania’s second biggest park located in Central Southern Tanzania, 128km (80 miles) west of Iringa. The moment your
plane touches down, a line of zebras parade across the runway, and a leggy giraffe races through the distance past the
baobab trees. Ruaha is one of the best kept secrets in Tanzania Safari circles, and with less than a fifth of the number of
tourists who flock to Serengeti, you’ll have the place almost to yourself on an isolated and exhilarating Tanzania Safari.
2 September 2016
Fly from Katavi airstrip in a private shared charter (13 Seater Cessna Caravan). You will be dropped off at Jongomero
airstrip in Ruaha National Park and transferred to your lodge. Enjoy lunch and an afternoon game drive. Return to the
lodge for dinner under the stars. Accommodation is provided at Jongomero Lodge. All meals included.
3 & 4 September 2016
After breakfast, head out into the bush as you explore this beautiful area. You will lose no time in the morning to get to
a fresh kill or see predators hunting. Follow hunts as they develop and watch the game go about it’s business in this
unspoilt and undiscovered wilderness. The largest elephant population in East Africa is in Ruaha National Park and you’ll
see plenty of giant tuskers. You can see cheetah, hyena, lion and leopard, and along with the normal plains game of
zebra, buffalo, giraffe, impala, grants gazelle, bush buck, waterbuck and kudu… you’ll also see oribi, clipspringer, roan
and sable. Plentiful game so keep your cameras on hand for amazing photos and memories to last a lifetime. Return to
camp each evening for sundowners and a hearty bush dinner.
5 September 2016
Today after a final breakfast in the bush, and a last game drive en route to the airstrip, you will meet your scheduled
flight back to Dar es Salaam.
SELOUS SAFARI GAME RESERVE
The world’s largest game reserve - twice the size of South Africa’s Kruger National Park, and bigger than Switzerland.
Found in South-east Tanzania in a remote and little-visited, yet vast part of the country. On your Tanzania Safari at Selous
you will see some of the last black rhino left in the region, and spot wild dogs and roaming elephant herds.
Selous Game Reserve is a game reserve and not a national park, a larger range of activities are permitted. Walking
safaris and boating safaris are becoming a popular alternative to vehicle-based trips, and offer visitors a chance to see
the diverse life along the Rufigi River up close in all its splendour.
2 September 2016
Fly from Katavi airstrip in a private shared charter (13 Seater Cessna Caravan). You will be dropped off at Siwandu
airstrip in the Selous Game Reserve and transferred to your lodge. Enjoy lunch and an afternoon game drive. Return to

3 & 4 September 2016

lakes and the mighty Rufiji River are the focal point of the photographic sector. Lion, hyena, buffalo, elephant, hippo,
crocs, giraffe, zebra, eland, waterbuck and wildebeest all a common sight, you will also be astounded by the bird life.
Your game drives will be half day drives, each time visiting new areas of the reserve and returning to the lodge for
delicious lunches and a chance to cool off in the pool. Accommodation is provided at Siwandu Lodge, located on the
banks of Lake Nzerakera. All meals included.

Mahale
Mountain
National
Park is
home to

chimps
Mahale Mountains National Park
Located in one of the most remote locations, on the western border with the Congo, against the dramatic shores of
Lake Tanganyika. Accessible only by small aircraft, the park is the home of a large chimpanzee population.
The chimpanzees that inhabit the forest directly behind the two permanent tented camps in the park are used to
people although they are not tame. This means that finding them can take a gentle twenty minute hike on a good
day but could also involve a climb to the upper reaches of the mountain and hiking through thick bush. Whilst this
kind of walking safari through the forest is a fantastic experience in itself, Tanzania Safari visitors should be prepared
for a challenging hike and a reasonable level of fitness is required.
However knowing this adds to the excitement of the whole walking safari and once the screeching of the chimps
is heard, adrenaline pumps through your veins and if you are privileged enough to be able to spend time with these
amazing primates in their natural habitat then you will have one of the most rewarding Tanzania safari experiences
of your lifetime.
The location of the park makes the travel time from Dar or Arusha more than worthwhile and makes it a really
special experience after witnessing the annular eclipse. The mountains reach up from white sand beaches and clear
blue waters of Lake Tanganyika which are home to a myriad of cyclids, and even hippo and crocodile. Watching
the sunset over the distant shore of the Congo, sitting on the beach with the mountain backdrop you have the real
sense of being in the heart of Africa on a real Tanzania Safari.
Set deep in the heart of the African interior, inaccessible by road and only 100km (60 miles) south of where Stanley
uttered that immortal greeting “Doctor Livingstone, I presume”, is a scene reminiscent of an Indian Ocean island
beach idyll.
Silky white coves hem in the azure waters of Lake Tanganyika, overshadowed by a chain of wild, jungle-draped
peaks towering almost 2km above the shore: the remote and mysterious Mahale Mountains. The area is also known
as Nkungwe, after the park’s largest mountain, held sacred by the local Tongwe people, and at 2,460 metres (8,069
ft) the highest of the six prominent points that make up the Mahale Range. A stunning Tanzania Safari backdrop.
And while chimpanzees are the star attraction, the slopes support a diverse forest fauna, including readily observed
troops of red colobus, red-tailed and blue monkeys, and a kaleidoscopic array of colourful forest birds that are a must
for any intrepid walking safari enthusiast. You can trace the Tongwe people’s ancient pilgrimage to the mountain
spirits, hiking through the montane rainforest belt – home to an endemic race of Angola colobus monkey - to high
grassy ridges chequered with alpine bamboo. Then bathe in the impossibly clear waters of the world’s longest,
second-deepest and least-polluted freshwater lake – harbouring an estimated 1,000 fish species - before your
reluctantly return to camp, as you came, by boat, on this Tanzania Safari.
2 September 2016
Fly from Katavi airstrip in a private charter (13 Seater Cessna Caravan). Upon arrival into Mahale you will be picked
up from and continue cruising to Kungwe Beach Lodge. Have afternoon forest walks and sundowners overlooking
Lake Tanganyika. Meals and overnight at Kungwe Beach Lodge. All meals included.
3 & 4 September 2016
After breakfast, head out into the forest on a chimpanzee trek. Mahale Mountains National Park is home to some
of the Africa’s last remaining wild chimpanzees, a population of roughly 900. Tracking the chimps of Mahale is a
magical experience. Mahale Mountains NP borders Lake Tanganyika-the World’s longest, second deepest and least
polluted freshwater lake-harbouring an estimated 1000 fish species. One afternoon, have a boat safari on the lake.
Accommodation is provided at Kungwe Beach lodge. All meals included.
5 September 2016
Today after a final breakfast in the bush, your transfer to the Mahale airstrip will be via boat. Fly back to Dar es
Salaam in a shared charter arriving back.
