1. Rodrigo MoraisQ & A for EmpreendedorX
1 - Robert, it’s a pleasure to be able to interview a figure so emblematic in the scenario of global entrepreneurship like you. We know that you have a life really troubled by giving lectures in various places in the world, thank you for your time! How is for you, all these trips, commitments and teach to the persons financial education? How is the feedback from your customers?
My passion is to educate people about money. It’s the reason Kim and I started the Rich Dad Company. As such, I truly enjoy the travel. I’m a lucky man to be able to see the world and make money doing what I’m passionate about.
One of the great things about Rich Dad, is the loyalty of our fans. Meeting people whose perspectives about money are being changed is one of the best things about traveling. It’s great to hear the stories people share.
2 - A concept that I learned in the book quot;
rich father, poor fatherquot;
refers to the method overridden in teaching that the institutions and governments provide to the people. In your view, which is an interesting model of education that can strengthen entrepreneurial characteristics in children? How would be the appropriate procedure to adopt this new vision in the teaching of current education?
In my book, Conspiracy of the Rich, the final chapter was devoted to what I would do if I ran the school system. It’s my belief that a comprehensive financial education would include the following elements:
The history of money
Understanding your financial statement
The difference between an asset and a liability
The difference between capital gains and cash flow
Measuring an asset’s strength
Knowing how to choose good partners
Knowing what asset or asset class is best for you
Knowing when to focus and when to diversify
Minimizing risk
Minimizing taxes
The difference between debt and credibility
Knowing how to use derivatives
Knowing how your wealth is stolen
Learning from mistakes
Adopting this into our school systems would require comprehensive education reform—and a desire on the part of the conspiracy of the rich to give up the very vehicle that keeps them in power, an education system that creates good employees instead of good entrepreneurs.
I find the best thing to do instead of fighting the system is to simply educate yourself and your kids.
3 - Something interesting that I had often wondered what was really truly understand your feelings and beliefs about permanent jobs, such as when you worked at Xerox in 1973. Do you believe that people can develop themselves financially through work fixed? If not, which are the steps for a person to begin develop your own business?
Yes, one of my primary points in sharing my story about working at Xerox was that it’s important to work to learn rather than to work to earn. I passed up a number of well-paying jobs in order to take a poor-paying job at Xerox and learn how to sell. To me it was more important to gain sales skills than to have a large and steady paycheck.
Also, in addition to working to learn, having a job is a great way to take care of yourself and your family while you work on your financial education. I encourage people to start a business on the side while still working, and then have a plan as to how to move into doing that business full-time.
4 - In Brazil, the government has encouraged a number of informal workers to become legal entities (companies), and grant access to credit for new business formation, since the business has a structured plan and developed. What do you think of this methodology? Do you believe it is important that people have more access to credit, when they do not have money to invest?
I think that access to credit is vital, but as the current global debt crisis showed us, debt in the hands of the wrong people can be catastrophic. I like the idea of creating ways for people to have easier access to credit to grow their business, but I also think it’s important to make sure those getting the credit aren’t just getting hand outs. I would think a system like this would be more successful if it was coupled with comprehensive financial education that taught people how to use debt to their advantage and to make good financial and business decisions.
5 - A phrase that I always remember, when I think about you is quot;
The difference between the word “rich (Rico, in portuguese)” and “risk (Risco, in portuguese)” is the ”S” of security.quot;
From Allan Arantes. Which is your understanding of the relationship between risk and enrichment?
Many people view investing and business as risky because they don’t have a full understanding of money and how it works. For them, it is risky because they are uneducated. If you have a good financial education and a high financial IQ, however, doing what I do isn’t risky.
One of the great things about being a businessman and an investor, is that I have control over my business and investments—and thus over my money.
I think it’s risky to be an employee and not have any control over whether you’ll lose your job or not.
6 - If you could advise readers of Empreendedorx in relation to investment, which would be the most profitable areas today? How to spot markets and investment possibilities healthy?
With the world’s economies deflating, it’s a great time to buy assets that will provide good cash flow. I’m also buying assets that will hedge against inflation because I believe inflation will come on strong once we hit the bottom.
My advice is to determine what asset classes are the best for you, learn all you can about them, keep up on the news and current events, and be ready to act when need be.
7 – A little bit informal question: How is your relationship with the luxury? Do you believed that most quot;
successful peoplequot;
like to consume goods relatively expensive?
Everybody is different. I like the fine things in life, and I definitely don’t like to live below my means. I like nice cars, collect rare guns, and enjoy good food, among other things. I don’t buy these things, however, unless I have investments that pay for them. For instance, when I wanted a Bentley, I created an investment account that would pay for it. I had to wait longer than if I’d just bought it with cash on hand, but in the end, I had my car and a new asset.
8 - How do you see the current moment of crisis in Europe (with the problem of Greece) and the direction of the European market speculation? What advice would you suggest to investors that have resources in that region?
Europe is in trouble and I’m not sure they will recover because they don’t have the power to print money. Eventually the debt issues will catch up with them and they’ll either lose the ability or the desire to bail out troubled countries.
My advice is the same for everyone, invest in assets that cash flow and that hedge against inflation.
9 - In Brazil, we have the events of the World Cup football (in 2014) andOlympics (in 2016). Do you think is a good time for investors, both Brazilians and other countries look to Brazil as a reference in the creation of business? For even then, these events reflect only the time that Brazil is living.
Certainly big events like that are good for a local economy. Big cultural events provide many opportunities to make money.
Brazil has enjoyed some great years of growth as of late. And while things are slowing down, they are better than in many parts of the world. The World Cup and the Olympics should be a positive force in the economy.
10 - Robert, I would like to state that really was a pleasure interviewing you. As a reader of your books, I feel really fortunate to have had this opportunity. You could leave a special message to readers of EmpreendedorX?
I want people to know that knowledge is money. It’s not how much money you make or have that makes you rich, but how you use that money. Continue to invest in your financial education and you will prosper.
