the Bureau of HIV/STD and Viral Hepatitis Prevention.
The three major types of hepatitis are A, B, and C. All types can affect
the liver, but statistics show that hepatitis C can lead to liver cancer in
less than 5 percent of Americans with the disease. Although most
hepatitis C patients are low-risk, risk increases when cirrhosis is
present.
Cirrhosis may develop in those who have had hepatitis C for over 20
years. During this time scar tissue replaces healthy liver cells. Although
the liver creates new cells attempting to heal itself, this process
increases the risk of getting liver cancer. This is because as the liver is
creating more cells, the risk of cancer-causing mutation in these cells
increases.
