26. US 181 Harbor Bridge Project
Update to Corpus Christi City Council
April 19, 2016
Overall Enhancements
• The new interchange enhancements will provide improved mobility and
greater connectivity to areas near the Port, SEA district, and downtown.
• The enhancements include an emphasis on bicycle and pedestrian
connectivity and the overall visual quality of the Harbor Bridge Project,
including the North Beach and downtown areas.
• The enhancements presented are part of the overall Design-Build process.
This process includes the HBP team’s overall commitment to refine design
elements over the life of the project to achieve the greatest results.
• The enhancements keep original access to neighborhoods included under
the Red Alternative.
Elimination of Six Signals
• A major enhancement includes the elimination of a cluster of six traffic
signals included in the original design, with the intent to create free flowing
mobility.
• In the original design, the traffic signals were to be clustered within a two
block area at the following intersections.
1. Northbound Frontage Road (Brownlee) and Leopard
2. Northbound Frontage Road (Brownlee) and Eastbound Frontage Road (Antelope)
3. Northbound Frontage Road (Brownlee) and Westbound Frontage Road (Buffalo)
4. Southbound Frontage Road (Culberson) and Westbound Frontage Road (Buffalo)
5. Southbound Frontage Road (Culberson) and Eastbound Frontage Road (Antelope)
6. Southbound Frontage Road (Culberson) and Leopard
• Elimination of these signals will create multiple free flowing gateways into
and out of the Port, SEA district and downtown areas.
Enhanced Port and Refinery Access
• Access from Nueces Bay Blvd to northbound US181 and southbound
Crosstown Expressway has been greatly improved allowing access to the direct
connector ramps.
• This will allow semi-trucks and other large commercial vehicles to avoid signals
and maintain highway speeds when entering the bridge. It will also direct semi-
trucks and commercial vehicles away from streets used by passenger vehicles.
North Beach Area
• The enhancements in the North Beach area include an enhanced connection
near Walnut Street, additional safety measures at Our Lady Star of the Sea
Church, enhanced connection between northbound and southbound frontage
roads at Bridgeport Avenue and enhanced shared use path between Burleson
Street and Beach Avenue.
Enhanced Connection near Walnut Street- Maintains neighborhood connectivity and
improves safety.
Our Lady of the Sea Church - Improves safety for access to the church.
Enhanced connection between Northbound and Southbound frontage roads-Improves
circulation for north beach residents.
Enhanced shared used path between Burleson Street and Beach Avenue- Removes
bicycle traffic from the northbound frontage road and provides a separate, buffered, bi-
directional, shared use path. This also adds connectivity to the Rincon Channel Bird
Viewing Area.
SEA District Access
• Overall improves traffic flow and mobility exiting and entering the SEA district.
