2. How do I become an
Automotive Mechanic?
• To become an Automotive Mechanic you usually have to
complete an Apprenticeship in Automotive (Mechanical –
Light Vehicle). Entry requirements may vary but employers
generally require a minimum of Year 10. Training is usually
both on and off the job. The off-the-job training is provided
through Registered Training Organisations (RTO’s), including
Group Training Companies. Details of the training may vary
depending on the needs of the employer and are finalised as
part of the training agreement.
3. How many jobs are in the industry
Automotive service technicians and mechanics held about
763,700 jobs in 2008. Most worked in car repair shops, for car
dealers, or for places that sell car parts and supplies. Others
worked in gas stations, home and auto supply stores, and for
companies that rent cars. More than 15 percent worked for
themselves.
4. What does the future hold
Employment of automotive service technicians and mechanics is
expected to slowly grow in the near future . The closing of
many automobile dealerships will lead to fewer job openings
in dealer service centres. However, job opportunities are
expected to be very good for people who complete a training
program and receive a certification. People who are good at
figuring out problems should have the best chances. Their
training should include basic electronics skills. People without
formal automotive training will likely have to compete for
beginner jobs.
